Senior Wayne Chism was named first-team All-SEC, the only Tennessee player recognized in the various honors the league's coaches announced Tuesday.
The major honors went to Kevin Stallings of Vanderbilt as coach of the year, Kentucky's John Wall as player of the year and his teammate DeMarcus Cousins as freshman of the year.
This is Chism's initial postseason first-team All-SEC honor. He was on the second team last season.
"I'm really happy that Wayne was first-team,'' coach Bruce Pearl said Tuesday. "That was really deserving.
"Look at his career, All-Freshman team, second-team a year ago, first-team this year. That's great progress.''
Joining Chism on the first team were Cousins, Wall and Kentucky's Patrick Patterson, South Carolina's Devin Downey, Georgia's Trey Thompkins and Mississippi State's Jarvis Varnardo.
Varnado also was named defensive player of the year.
Vanderbilt's John Jenkins is the sixth man of the year.
Making the second team were Alabama's Mikhail Torrance, Arkansas' Courtney Fortson, Florida's Erving Walker, LSU's Tasmin Mitchell, Chris Warren of Ole Miss, Mississippi State's Dee Bost and Vanderbilt teammates A.J. Ogilvy and Jeffrey Taylor.
The all-freshman team included Cousins, Wall, Jenkins, Alabama's Tony Mitchell, Marshawn Powell of Arkansas, Reginald Bucker of Ole Miss and Kentucky's Eric Bledsoe.
The all-defensive team is Patterson, Varnado, Downey, Taylor and Sam Muldrow of South Carolina.
Pearl was disappointed Chism was the only Vol mentioned for any of the honors.
"I understand why Bobby (Maze) or J.P. (Prince) or Scotty (Hopson) may not have been second-team,'' Pearl said, "but they've got to be right there. I would love to see them singled out as worthy of consideration.
"Vanderbilt had three guys on those first two teams who were deserving. Kentucky had three guys on the first team who were deserving.
"But we only had one guy. Maybe that speaks to the fact that the key to our season has been a real team effort.''
More Chism: Chism also was named All-District IV by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Kentucky's John Calipari is district coach of the year.
DeVoe A Legend: Don DeVoe will represent UT at this year's "Legends of SEC Basketball" at the tournament in Nashville this week.
DeVoe was 204-137 as head coach 1978-89. His teams won the 1979 SEC tournament, the 1982 SEC regular-season title and five consecutive first-round NCAA tournament games 1979-83.

I think it's about time Chism got the recognition he dissevers. Others have gotten the limelight but Wayne just keeps on playing his game my not always be pretty but he during several games carried the Vols, sometimes to a win.
rockytopron writes:
Wayne deserves the recognition.
Bruce Pearl should be coach of the year. This is a sham!
Lets go Vols!

Congrats, Wayne... you definitely earned it!

Is it me, or is no one from Auburn mentioned?

Well deserved award for Chism. Prince should have also received some recognition.
Pearl can pick up his award on Sunday. It should say something like "2009-2010 SEC Champions."
In Bruce We Trust...

Do you think this is major league baseball where every team has to be represented on the all star roster? I am surprised LSU gets a mention!
UTBEATEMALL writes:
Pearl probably voted for Stallings after they came into TBA and were the only team to win there this year when Kansas and Kentucky could not!

Auburn has a basketball team? j/k
"Varnado was also named Defensive Player of the Year." Then all the more sweet to see UT KATN inside the paint last Saturday at the Hump and do so all over Varnado's world.
I would say Pearl deserves the nod over Stallings even though Vandy convincingly swept UT. But remember, these awards are not decided by logic or common sense, they're decided by the forces of niceness.

Consider what the man has done: Crafted an nationally competitive and respected athletic program at Vanderbilt. Maybe for his next trick he'll convince the Tea Party that a single payer healthcare system is the best option for America.

Cat, must I remind you that Cal doesn't give a rat's keister about the SEC Championship (and by extension the SEC Tourney). And he's not a very good coach even when he REALLY cares: see NCG vs Kansas 2008.

Congrats Weezy. You should have gotten this last year as well, but hats off anyway. If you'd stay inside the three point line a bit more you'd be a 2 timer. ;)

You know, I read that and I feel kind of like I do when I buy a lottery ticket. For a day or two I enjoy the idea of owning a yacht, but then the numbers are released and I come back to reality and go to work and pay bills. Trusting the NCAA to do "the right thing" is like trusting a crack addict with your wallet.

Imagine what Kentucky could have done this year if they had a good coach!

Calimari.........please.
Pearl or Stallings would not have lost a game with that lineup.
GO VOLS!!!!!!!

I apologize to all fellow Vol fans for letting the troll get to me. I retaliated first instead of giving Wayne the credit he's due.
I've said it many times on these boards that I think Wayne Chism is the heart and soul of this team. It has been fun to watch him grow the last 4 years into the player he is today. He will be greatly missed by this team next year and by Vols fans everywhere. I'm a fellow West Tennessean and Wayne has made me very proud. Proud to be a Vol and proud to be from Tennessee.
Wayne, continued success to you young man as you go through life. You will be remembered as a Vol great forever!
GO VOLS!!!!!!!

Great for Wayne.
But Pearl not getting COY is a major snub. Period.
CoverOrange writes:
A senior laden team that won the SEC last year and he finishes third in the east this year. Yes, there was adversity and multiple guns hired up north that played parts in that but the case for Pearl for COY had some holes. Now Stallings, I can't think of anything to make the case for him.
whhotchkiss#650703 writes:
Jermaine Beal from Vanderbilt was also on the First Team. This article left him out for some reason. Don't believe me? Go to secsports.com.

I'm very happy and proud for "Weezy", but I also question why Stallings won COY. Vandy was tough this year, but not sure he deserved it. Oh well!
GerryOP writes:
Bwaaahaaahaaa! 'Member, Calipari has already said the SEC Championship is meaningless?
With the rumors floating around about the recruiting of Wall and Cousins, if UK does win, the SEC will inscribe the plague using Dry Erase Marker. Calipari will continue his history of leaving vacated records and empty trophy cases in his wake.
blazeglory07 writes:
I agree 100% Bruce should have got coach of the year and maybe even national coach of the year, after what happened to his team and still pulled out the wins his team did.I know the players won the game but if not for Bruce they still dont beat Kansas.I can't speak for everyone, but I hope BP is a vol for the rest of his coaching life,no matter what happens in the win-loss column. He is not only a great coach but one hell of a guy.Coachem up Bruce and lets get an SEC title and hopefully a Final4 appearance.

bigorange61 writes:
Actually that can happen many ways. Here's an example:
Freshman of the Year:
Cousins - 7 votes
Wall - 5 votes
Player of the Year:
Wall - 5 votes
Cousins - 4 votes
Downey - 3 votes
Means that three of Cousins voters for freshman of the year didn't think he was player of the year. Wall voters thought he was both. One of many scenarios.

Congrats to Wayne on a well deserved honor and award. Very proud of Wayne and also Maze for getting the service award. Both true Vols! Was glad that Calipari did not get anything....but was thinking Pearl deserved a mention. With what he accomplished with this team after all they went through? Oh well....but way to represent Chism...you deserved it! Go Vols!
allntl1#565211 writes:
kitty cat fans are use to and seek coaches of calamaries caliber. Calamarie probably does deserve the award just for basiclly building an NBA type team with a broke down state school budget like UK. I live in KY and I can tell you the state has nothing going for it. You still get UK fans call in to the pre game shows and ask if Richie Farmer is gonna play any of the game. Just remember any banners cats win are only rented. They must be returned. See Memphis and UMASS.
tennisvol writes:
Congratulations and very well deserved by Chism.

Congrats to Wayne since he couldn't even make SECOND team All-SEC in the pre-season. I am a huge CBP fan and I think he did a heckuva job this year, but it is hard to pick him for COY over a guy who beat him twice. However, if the Vols could somehow win the SEC tourney, I might demand a recount(;-P)!
vol_4_fan writes:
So with Coach Cal's vacted wins at 2 other schools can we then say that between the last 2 UK coaches you can put them together and get a DRUNK CHEATER? Just asking. Go Vols
