Tennessee Men's Basketball
NASHVILLE - Wayne Chism went to the Tennessee bench for a rare break as his team was closing out a 76-65 victory over Ole Miss in the second round of the SEC tournament on Friday. But he didn't sit down.
There were still a few minutes left on the clock at Bridgestone Arena. That was too much time against a desperate Ole Miss team, which supposedly was playing for its NCAA tournament life.
"Teams aren't going to give up," he said. "Because they know what's at stake."
So Chism drank his Gatorade and accepted congratulations from a Kentucky fan behind the UT bench. But he didn't sit down,
He never does when a game is in doubt. He wants to stay loose and ready.
Moments later, he was back on the floor, finishing off a 16-point, 15-rebound performance that was too much for Ole Miss to overcome.
His nickname never seemed more inappropriate. "Wheezy," they call him because of his asthmatic condition, which requires him to use an inhaler as a precautionary measure before each game.
Wheezy played 36 minutes against LSU on Thursday and 36 more against Ole Miss. And if this afternoon's semifinal game had been moved up to Friday night, I don't doubt he could have logged another 36 minutes.
In the final days of a four-year college career that have made him worthy of All-SEC recognition, Wheezy has become a regular Marathon Man. Not only has he scored 33 points and claimed 26 rebounds in the tournament, he has been his team's driving force from start to finish, seemingly consumed with executing every detail that might enhance UT's status for March Madness.
He has never been more fun to watch.
For example, take the last five minutes of a game that was going the Vols' way, but hadn't quite been squeezed into the win column.
Chism smiled broadly as officials called a charge on Ole Miss, then set a jarring pick at the other end of the floor before rolling to the basket for a layup. Seconds later, he extended his arms low enough to pry the ball from 5-foot-10 point guard Chris Warren and rushed down court on the dribble.
Size didn't matter at that point. Neither did minutes played. Chism was playing harder than anybody - little guys, big guys; starters, reserves.
"Down the stretch in these types of games, you've got to have a lot of energy," he stressed.
A sense of urgency helps, too.
"My (college career) is coming to an end," Chism said. "I don't know when it's gonna be, but I'm playing as though it's my last game."
Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy could appreciate that as much as anyone. How much different Friday's game might have been if he had a post player with Chism's skill, stamina and commitment to complement the Rebels' perimeter game.
"If you look at what (Chism) has been able to accomplish in his four years - not only statistically but with the success his teams have had - he has to go down as one of the all-time best in the history of that program," Kennedy said. "Wayne Chism has been tremendous."
Two tremendous performances have led to a tremendous challenge - today's match-up with No. 2 Kentucky and DeMarcus Cousins, arguably the most imposing player in the college game.
My guess is Wheezy will take a hit on his inhaler, draw a deep breath and attack the next 36 minutes as though the curtain is about to drop.

Chism for tourney MVP! Don't let the Cats get you in foul trouble Weezy. They will come right at you the first five minutes. Vols 68 - Cats 64.

I've noticed he doesn't sit down. I thought it was a recent habit due to all his injuries. He is probably afraid he'd get stiff if he sits.

Wayne has become one of my all-time favorite Vols. What a warrior he has been this year. With Williams back he & Wheezy present a formidable challenge inside for others and it's a little easier for Wayne to stay out of foul trouble. Thanks for leading well this year Wayne - let's go beat the Cats.

Speaking of sitting down, I think it's time for Scotty to get some pine until he's ready to play. It worked at Florida, maybe it can work again.
I love Scotty, I just can't figure out why he seems to vanish sometimes....

Vols 4.5 underdog, UK ranked #2 - UT ranked #13, UK has 4 first round draft picks - UT may have 1, UK will have 14,000 fans, UT may have 1,500. You would think the VOLS have no chance in this game - UT 68 UK 60. See you at the game!

Wayne is the man and one day a #4 banner will be hanging from the rafters at TBA.
GO VOLS!

His leadership legacy made all the more impressive by contrasting to what we would've had if Tyler had cemented his leadership style on this team...much more NBA-trash talking style (I stopped lip reading him after the Vandy game last year). We've got much more integrity and true grit now with Wayne, and he emerged when TS left. I wish TS the best, but Wayne is a much better rep for our proud tradition. And I predict that his best leadership moment is gonna be Saturday - lets send these four cat-kids on to their NBA career with a loss in the great state of Tennessee! Let's create some cheap tickets for ourselves on Sunday! Rock Nashville so hard the Cumberland will reverse direction and wash that blue out....! GoVOLS!!

Wayne came in with, Duke Crews, Tyler Smith both are gone due to ignorance but Wayne has shown he is a LEADER and a heck of a ball player. He is almost unstopable when he plays with HEART and EMOTION, I'll be sad to see him go. Win an SEC tournament and a #4 jersey will hang at TBA! GO VOLS!!!

"The Happy Warrior"
That was the nickname of a politician (Hubert H. Humphrey) back in the '60s. It fits Chism even better.

On a football note, did everyone see that Oregon suspended their starting QB (Masoli) for the entire 2010 season? He's been a bad boy.

Yes, I think any good Tennessean knows this, but just letting them wash downstream would be too easy....we've got to do the hard thing sister!

Unless they get a LOT better over the summer, Hall and Williams together will be hard put to equal Wayne's production next year if they play 30 minutes each. I don't think anybody on the current roster will provide his leadership. He will be SORELY missed! I hope the NBA scouts have gotten an eyeful of his skills and competitive nature in this tourney. He will always be right at the very top of the list of most-beloved Vols of all time.
