Opening with Aztecs, Vols get big challenge

Pearl says the Mountain West Conference is 'by far' the best league west of the Big 12

KNOXVILLE -- Considering San Diego State is 2,200 miles from the Tennessee campus and is rarely seen on national television, Volunteers coach Bruce Pearl knew an impressive amount of basic information on the Aztecs on Sunday night.

"They're a good team, and (coach) Steve Fisher does a great job," Pearl said less than 20 minutes after the NCAA tournament bracket was announced. "I know they're a big team. I know they're a really good offensive team, and a really good rebounding team.

"We're going to spend the night getting ready for them, and I'll tell you a lot more about them tomorrow."

Come Monday morning, Pearl's feelings hadn't changed much. His initial suspicions were confirmed. The No. 11 seed Aztecs (25-8) look like a formidable first-round foe for the No. 6 seed Vols (25-8).

Just take it one game at a time. The hoop is still 10 feet high, and the floor dimensions remain the same. GO VOLS!

Key to winning: Pat Summit.

I think you're right. Their offensive rebounding stats are scary! We can't even think about running until we secure possession, and then we will have to be efficient on offense ourselves. This will not be an easy opener for us, but if we can get past this one, it may give us the confidence to win a couple more. GBO!!! TCB!!!

SDSU plays 3 forwards and 2 guards as starters;which means they have size for sure..All the forwards avg double figures..With 3 big forwards they do a good job blocking passing lanes but they leave holes for drives to the basket and often back off players going hard to the hoop..Their signature play is a pass inside to the post(which usually draws a double team))then they pass to the trailing forward for an open dunk..If someone like me see's this on film Iam sure Bruce sees it also.. Our transition game could be a big factor against them but after watching all the bumbling and fumbling we did in transition on the open floor against ky; it leaves doubt!! In this game like any tourney game we must come out shooting the ball well..Another one of our patented 25% from the floor slow starts will end this game by halftime..

SDSU should not even be in the game with 10 minutes left to go in the contest. If SP is playing it could be a different story. After the elbow that Goins threw against kentucky,he should be on the bench for the whole game, along with SP.
