The school in Athens beats Georgetown -- the one in Ohio. So much for the office pool. The NCAA basketball tournament always brings surprises and this is certainly one.

Here's a look at how Ohio knocked off the mighty Hoyas.

Ohio is the next opponent, on Saturday, for the Vols, who got by San Diego State in the second game in Providence, R.I. on Thursday night.

The game time Saturday for the Ohio-Tennessee game is 30 minutes following the 1:05 p.m. start of the South Regional game featuring Villanova vs. Saint Mary's, Calif., or somewhere around 3:30 p.m.

Here's a look at the surprising and upset minded Bobcats:

I love hearing all the ESPN basketball "experts" scramble to find reasons why the Big Easy lost so many games. The look on their faces is priceless. They hardly play anybody but themselves; overrated and fluffed by ESPN. I can't wait for others to fall..........

It's funny that OU has played a totally soft schedule; playing nobodys but still seem to be an all round solid team...The key to winning is shut down Basset and Freeman..They both find ways to score no matter who the opponent..Georgetowns defense had no intensity and had no answer for ohios kick out passes to Basset;Probably because ohio is a very good passing team..Ohio shot almost 60% and you have to wonder at what point their hot shooting hits a brick wall;Hopefully it will be saturday!!!

Vols gotta show more interest that they did last night or Ohio will run em out of there.

I wanted to be at the game last night but business prevented. But now I have to go for Saturday, only 7 hr drive from Ontario. Thinking tickets will be plentiful with Georgetown out. GBO!

This is the best thing for the Vols. I cant believe Georgetown lost. We should be in the sweet 16 now and I am pumped!

KCHS_alum writes:

The Vols did exactly what they needed to do last night. On a day when higher seeds fell like flies, they played that smothering UT D! Georgetown giving up 93 points? A Big East team? There's a big surprise. D in Big East Bball is like D in PAC-10 football - an afterthought. The Bobcats will not score more than 65 points tomorrow. For a 7-9 regular season win team from the MAC, they have definitely been on a roll - tomorrow the roll stops. And if we can consistently get someone like Goins hot every game, I'm not sure who can stop us.

Wish I could go - reality intrudes. But based on the crowd last night, it looks like you're going to have a lot of Vol fans to sit with. Hope you have a good trip and you come home happy. Go Vols!

Jack Lail, thanks for putting together these opponent previews. KNS does do somethings right. (although the AP article linked is poorly written but that is not your fault)

Thanks, and, yeah, I can't fix AP!

Looking over the roster for Ohio, I wonder if it isn't time to trot out the Maze-Goins experiment again. OU has three guards/forwards that shoot the three pretty well that are 5-11, 6-2 and 6-5. Do we need the sticky defense of Goins and Maze on the smaller guys? I think Prince will do well, but I worry Scotty won't.

Like every other one of your predictions, I'm sure you will be wrong. You do nothing but cut down Pearl and the team and yet time after time they prove you wrong. This team has already accomplished more then anyone thought they could after the Tyler Smith fiasco and just continue to show what heart they have and what a fantastic job Pearl does coaching. As one of the announcers said in last night's game, the job that Pearl has done with this team has been amazing. You can cut Pearl and the team down all you want but every time you do, you just make yourself look the bigger fool and that is saying a lot.

I thought the same thing but also think if we go with a bigger lineup (Maze, Hopson, Prince) in the frontcourt, our length may bother their shooters, much like Louisville did to us 2 years ago in the Sweet 16. We really should pound the ball inside with our size advantage, although they will play a sagging zone. We will need to hit some outside shots to open things up in the middle.

Good point! Luckily, the Vols have lots of ways they can go, personnel-wise. We might even see a reappearance from Josh Bone. We ought to be able to handle the Bobcats inside, but we can't let their outside shooters get on a roll like they were on yesterday! GBO!!! TCB!!!

With the players you mentioned, I'm sure you meant "backcourt", but that is also a look worth considering. Mixing up bigger and smaller lineups in the backcourt might keep them from getting into any kind of rhythm. As I said before, it's a good thing that we have lots of options for personnel groupings.

They've got a guy 6-10 and another 6-8. We don't really have a size advantage under the basket. However, they are not big shot blockers like SDSt was. I understand your point about length but I'm more concerned about a body sticking to a body coming off screens.

As for sagging zones and Chism/Williams slamming the basket. I was amazed that every time either got the ball down low how quickly they were swarmed. Somebody, a cutter, has to come open and Chism/Williams need to hit them.

The name Josh Bone flitted across my brain when I wrote that post. His not having played in months (except for mop of duty in the Ky debacle) makes him a question mark. However, I'd prefer Josh to Skylar. Don't know what the thought process was that CBP pulled SM from the bench last night.

Ohio hits MOST free throws so hopefully we can avoid fouling. We have a hard-pressing D but we need to be careful with this bunch. If our D can take two of their best "out" or at least "down"...then we can win this game. Wayne surely will be better Saturday. As a senior he need to avoid some of his obvious miscues of last night, i.e. missed lay ups, trying too many 3's, trying to dribble behind his back, slow bounce passes. I have faith in him though and I believe last night was an aberration for Wayne and he'll be rough and ready tomorrow! I'm so pleased with this bunch. Coach Pearl, be sure they get plenty of rest so we can avoid another last ten minute crash. Let's get to the SWEET SIXTEEN and then, well, who knows? Go Vols! We love you guys.

UTVOLSRROCKN writes:

Our defense will stop their threes! CBP's rotation nation has turned out very well as we will be able to wear most teams down! Our offense may not be on point, but with our defense and depth, we will continue to win!

Is anyone else disappointed in how many times Williams totally stunk up easy lay ups last night? He can only jump 3 inches and has no clue where the rim is. I like the big body, but when he is bad, he is horrible. He was burned a lot off the spin in the post.

Why did Hopson say he would step up? He had another lazy game. He has a chance to earm millions, but may lose it because his laziness.

Also, is it me or does Chism not like to dunk? He blows a lot of close put ins that should be jammed.

Tennessee really should win big vs Ohio. We are great at 3 point D. I already know I am going to wonder how Freeman can score against a good team. It means nothing, but he looks like a tall 9th grade kid. What is he 6'8 150? And looks more like a chess team member than a ball player.

GO VOLS

Williams made the best pass of the night on the Goins 3, great kick out pass. I am proud of them doing whatever they have to as long as we advance! Go Vols

Maze, Hopson, Tatum, need a good game...not to win especially in this one, but for us to keep winning. Good guard play will take some of the pressure off the bigs like we saw against San Diego.

I'm with you in regards to Skylar. We quickly lost ground when he came in because defensively he can't keep his man in front of him. Whoever comes off their man to help McBee leaves his own man wide open. Two easy baskets in a row.

This is nothing new. Several teams have exploited it. I guess he is not going to learn unless he gets some playing time. Hopefully he will start contributing points. I really want this kid to succeed.

I'm sure we all do, but, unless he starts hitting some shots, he has no business out there chasing quicker guards. Right now, he should only play when the other team is playing a tight zone and while he is in there we should play one on defense.

I'm a Skylar fan, but he actually HAS had a couple of bad passes in the last few games. On some teams, he might have been a really good player by now if he played 25-30 minutes a night, but UT has enough other, better guys that he can't get that kind of experience or a sense that the team is depending on him. I see a good upside for him eventually, but I don't think he is really ready for more than spot duty at this point in the season.
