Summitt sessions all good for Lady Vols

Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt met Sunday with Glory Johnson, Alyssia Brewer and Kamiko Williams in individual film sessions.

The three players characterized the meetings as helpful in preparation for an NCAA tournament second-round game against Dayton on Monday (TV: ESPN2, 7 p.m.).

"It wasn't hostile or anything," Williams said. "It was a nice little sit-down."

"I think it was real positive,'' said Johnson, who added jokingly "Pat can be positive sometimes. I enjoy that."

Summitt said that she used video clips to make her points and allowed the players to comment.

"It's not a time to jump on them,'' she said. "It's a time to get them focused."

She reminded Johnson about her shot selection and having better composure.

"Glory was shooting and just falling backward (Saturday) and she wasn't rebounding,'' Summitt said.

Brewer's session involved one of Summitt's favorite topics: Post-up points.

"I'm trying to get her to get better position,'' Summitt said. "So all she has to do is catch and score."

Williams, meanwhile, was implored one again to play harder. During Sunday's open press conference, Summitt said: "I told her, 'You can be a mental midget, or you can be a mental giant.' From this day forward, she's going to be a mental giant."

Said Williams: "My mom is always telling me that (Summitt) gave me a scholarship. I owe it to her. I owe it to my teammates. (Summitt's) on me because she doesn't want me to have any regrets. I really respect that about her. I'm really glad she's doing what she's doing."

No Worries: Summitt told Alicia Manning that Saturday was history after the All-SEC tournament honoree had two points and three rebounds before fouling out against Austin Peay.

"She said that game is over with, forget about it, it's gone, you're fine, you're just fine,'' Manning said. "She said come out there (today) relaxed and play your game."

The sophomore forward knows the specifics behind such a directive.

"Playing my game, to me, means rebounding, getting my little offensive putbacks, setting the tone on defense and getting the ball to where it needs to go,'' she said. "Not thinking about stuff. Be on autopilot, not manual."

A Week's Work: UT associate head coach Holly Warlick has been watching video of Dayton since the tournament bracket came out last Monday.

"They're like a Vanderbilt,'' she said. "They're a taller, bigger Vanderbilt team."

She said the No. 8 seed Flyers will challenge Tennessee on multiple fronts.

"Our keys, to me, are not giving up transition baskets and not giving up open threes,'' Warlick said. "Those, at times, have been our demise, those two things."
