Tennessee's Kelley Cain looks up from a huddle of teammates Saturday during the Memphis Regional against Baylor.
MEMPHIS - A lineup quandary left Tennessee torn about whom to play against Baylor on Saturday afternoon.
As a result, the Lady Vols shortened their bench, essentially playing just two reserves - Glory Johnson and Taber Spani.
Kamiko Williams was the eighth player utilized but the freshman guard played just one minute.
Overall, Tennessee's reserves played 39 minutes in a 77-62 loss in the Memphis Regional semifinals while Baylor's backups played 52. Baylor's reserves outscored UT's 21-10.
"It was a real, real struggle with us,'' UT assistant coach Dean Lockwood said. "The boat had leaks at each end. We were trying to find our best group that could be productive at both ends of the floor. It was a gut decision of who we felt was our best group at that time.''
Guard Shekinna Stricklen, along with backcourt teammate Angie Bjorklund, played 40 minutes.
No matter, Stricklen said fatigue wasn't a factor.
"We were getting frustrated,'' she said. "A lot of us were getting frustrated and we let it get to us."
Back To Work: In the wake of Saturday's loss, Tennessee might take advantage of the NCAA guidelines it used last season and convene some post-tournament workouts.
"It would be well-used,'' Lockwood said. "Why should we stop something that worked for us to get to this point now, that took us from a first-round exit to a Sweet 16?
"Bottom line, basketball is a skill/habit game. . . . Right now, our skills and our habits need to improve."
Off Target: Alicia Manning had one of UT's best shot attempts at the rim in the first half.
Or at least the sophomore forward thought she did before rushing a layup against Baylor center Brittney Griner's block attempt and missing badly.
"I saw her,'' Manning said. "I guess I was expecting contact and just kind of went up too strong."
Calling All Fans: As expected, UT fans dominated the crowd.
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey had that in mind when she issued her post-game plea.
"We need fans in the stands Monday (for the regional final between Duke and Baylor)," Mulkey said.
"I know all these people from Knoxville are going to leave, and all the fans from Baylor would probably do the same thing (if Baylor had lost). We need people in the Memphis area to come to the game.
"Come see Brittney Griner dunk in pregame warm-ups. We need fans in the stands. You can root for who you want to root for, but please come to the game."
Free-Throw Mismatch: UT's errant free-throw shooting figured prominently in the outcome, particularly since Baylor was so accurate.
The Lady Vols, who rank eighth in the SEC in free-throw shooting (67 percent), made only seven of 15 attempts against Baylor.
Baylor, which entered the game hitting 72 percent of its free throws, made 22 of 25 against the Lady Vols.
Griner Support: While Griner dominated the game with 27 points and 10 blocked shots, teammate Morghan Medlock also was more productive than any of UT's post players.
Medlock had 12 points, 11 rebounds and made six of nine shots.
Pat's Pal: Mulkey didn't take any satisfaction from knocking a Summitt team out of the NCAA tournament.
"Pat is our John Wooden," Mulkey said.
"We want our program where Pat's program has been and will continue to be.
"She is just class."

I think Glory should have played a little more, if for nothing else the rebounds! They only had one more rebound than Baylor! Glory cleans the boards, although she slumps in offense a little, she usually warms up and at least gives you 8 points. Just a thought! I don't know why Griner is the victim of such name calling. The girl only did her job and played her game. I wish Baylor continued success during this tournament. They usually are not as good as they were today, but even the three's for them were falling, and they are not a good outside shooting team. At 3 minutes down ten, I knew they were in trouble. Vicki, I pray you can remain healthy next year, you are so missed!

Griner is the next Candace -- She's one in a million, and I am personally happy she clocked snarky pony-tail girl. That being said, I wanted the LV'S to win, because they are always first, but they lost to a better team this time.

I would never criticize coach Pat .
What I saw was three critical problems.
The team had a burst of success during the second half my getting down the floor for fast breaks before Griner and her team got a chance to set up on defense and block shots.A time out by Baylor and that attack stopped. If had we continued that attack I think we would have won.
Than we lost composure and confidence.
one more thing---, why did we not take the ball at Griner and fake a pass or pump before a shot and lean into her for a foul?
Every day brings a new lesson, I wish they had been schooled earlier.

I have to agree. I believe Glory would have given some help on the block. She's tougher than either Cain or Brewer and would be able to frustrate Griner a little more. Additionally, all season it seems as if the guards had problems getting Glory the ball. As tall as the guards are it seems as if they could pass the ball better inside. The lady vols played their best all season when they passed the ball well. That didn't happen as good in this game as in some. Can't blame the Lady Vols too much though, because I believe Baylor is better than their record. Brittney is a phenomenal player and will be for the next 3 years. She impacts so much of the game. Everybody better get ready for Baylor because they are going to be good for the next few years, especially with the recruiting class they have coming in.

The sad part in all this Lady Vols fans is that our team showed up at Rendezvous and hour or so after the game for a party in the back. They all showed up laughing and having a big time like they didn't even care they had just lost.

You have got to be kidding. I'm guessing your young. John Wooden, "The Wizard of Westwood" does not only have the streak but is recognized as a paragon of virtue in the game. He is what coaches aspire to be.
UCLA was nothing, an underachiever that didn't even have it's own gym. It was the weakest team in the Pacific Conference. His first year he brought the team to a 22-7 record. From there the National Championships stacked up to the ceiling. He had a few decent players along the way like Lew Alcindor/Kareem Adbul Jabbar and Bill Walton. He was known to recruit players that would adapt to his style....speed, discipline, and a keen will to win.
By the time a UCLA Basketball player graduated from college they were gentleman, players could not swear or they would sit.
So Pout, I will leave you with a John Wooden quote, something you can learn from:
Be prepared and be honest.
John Wooden

This was a rough/sad day; we couldn't get anything going and Kelly didn't help the process any either. She says she knows she needs to be on the floor; but really, let's do something about that. We do need you; look what happened when you had to sit the majority of the half. I agree with "ahouseho"; I am no criticizer of Pat; she's awesome and I think she did what she could with her bench. No one else had been stepping up and the pace of the game wasn't what those were able to play at. It was a great season; you made great strides from last season. Keep working; it'll all pay off in the end.

Sorry Pout, I misinterpreted your original comment. When your wrong, your wrong, and I was. I apologize for my response. I'm an old Bruin fan and I didn't get the gist of what you were trying to say. Again, sorry.
