UT to play Southern California for NCAA men's tennis title

ATHENS, Ga. — Southern California’s reward for beating the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division I tennis tournament is a matchup against the team Trojans coach Peter Smith says is the real favorite.

USC, the defending champion and No. 5 seed, beat top-seeded Virginia 4-2 in the semifinals on Monday and will face No. 2 seed Tennessee for the championship on Tuesday. Tennessee beat host Georgia 4-1.

Smith says he picked the Vols as “the team to beat” before the tournament.

Virginia had a 36-match winning streak snapped with only its second loss.

Biggest concern now is #1 JP who has lost two days in a row and the doubles team as well. Dig deep and leave it all on the courts at the dawg pound in georgia. C'mon men in Orange and White beat the trojans.

Bring this one home, guys!

Isn't the NCAA tennis tourney at Georgia EVERY year, or am I wrong? I know it's facilities are excellent--but still, it's a major advantage to georgia and its program. We probably win easily on a neutral court. Aren't there other programs around the country with equal facilities?

signed, tired of georgia

Oh now! Wouldn't it be sweet to beat THAT team for the finals!!!!! I wonder if he who shall not be named will be at the game rooting for his beloved Trojans. Then again, who really cares where he might be...........probably be at the NCAA hearings now that I think on it.

You're a good man, allVol.Sorry for your loss.Hope the Vols can whack USC and bring a little retribution for The Deserters actions.Go Vols!

We need John-Patrick Smith, a No. 1, to play well tomorrow. If he wins, Vols roll.

orangecountyvols writes:

Fantastic accomplishment to do this with a bunch of little white dawgs nipping at our heels. Georgia is very tough at home and yes, you might wonder if there are other tennis courts elsewhere. Still, to do this should toughen up the Vols even more.
So go get the Trojans.............er, I mean USC !

AtLeastMyTeamHasPerfectSeasons writes:

I would have liked them to avenge their only loss to get a title, but I'll take it anyway they can get it!

Down with the puppyDawgs, and now like the morning after a hot date, trash the Trojans!

Colliervol writes:

This just in. An odd looking blond "girl" has been seen skulking around the courts in a too- tight maroon and yellow tennis dress and carrying a sign that says, "Hi. I'm Lane. For a good time, call the Southern Cal Football Offices." And on the back, it says: "I'm #16 but I try harder."
