Kiffin loses grievance against Raiders for 'a stunning lack of concern'

ALAMEDA, Calif. - An NFL arbitrator has denied a grievance filed by former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin in an attempt to claim the lost salary he maintained he was still owed by the team.

Kiffin is also the former coach of the University of Tennessee.

Raiders executive John Herrera issued a statement to The Associated Press on Monday stating the ruling was an overwhelming victory for the Raiders.

In the statement, Herrera said the league stated that Kiffin showed "a stunning lack of concern" for the terms of his contract and for the rules of the club.

Kiffin was fired in September 2008 for cause because of what owner Al Davis described as acts of insubordination and lying by the coach.

Kiffin filed his grievance with the NFL in October 2008 to claim the lost salary he maintained he was still owed by the team for the remainder of his two-year contract.

Why does this come as no surprise. Glad to see he didn't get this money and only wish his name could be erased from Tennessee history.

"Stunning lack of concern.....insubordination and lying?" Gee, I think those were perhaps the precise feelings here in Knoxville as well. And fairly soon, USC will have an opportunity to experience these same character flaws. Once that happens, it's bye bye and this guy WILL NOT find another job at an NFL franchise or any major university....book it! Once a low life, always a low life.

Voluvr writes:

Kiffin has two seasons. Hayden will likely take that time to find his own guy. He's a straight arrow and would likely not go for a guy like Kiffin.

Maybe we should file a grievance against Kiffy for his lack of concern for our institution. Triple that.. to include Monte and the drunk.

No fan of Kiffin obviously, but equally no fan of the utterly corrupt NFL justice system / errr marketing spin machine. Who would we generally expect the league to rule in favor of? A legendary and highly influential owner / team / market / fan base that has a direct impact on league healthine$$ or a failed / banished ex-head coach who jumped to the college ranks and has no friends outside the LA Coliseum?

Not upset for Layla's husband here because he's not very respectable. But watching the NFL, MLB, and NBA handle conflicts / discipline over a few decades makes me chuckle a little every time I hear their notions of justice.

Yeah, unless they can fill the cupboard and make a title run in 2 yrs. Not likely with the recruiting cloud tho.

Question: Has Kiffin done anything stupid or utterly embarrassing to his new "dream destination" since arriving? It seems like his tantrums here were nothing more than pub stunts. They worked and raised awareness for recruits. Oh, and made us look like a laughing stock for having him as a HC.

ResilientVol writes:

i really dont see kiffin screwing up the USC job. I believe that he honestly (stupidly) believed that it took all of his b.s. to make UT "relevant" even though it has never needed it before. But to the point... he knows he has the eyes on him at USC and ,snake or not, hes not a stupid man. Unfortunately i think tennessee is the only place he was willing to screw up just to get his name in the paper.
Of course thats just my opinion but just one more time for the record WHO CARES about USC's boytoy.... this is Tennessee.... GO VOLS

orangebloodgmc writes:

Wait ... you mean, the world does NOT revolve around Lane Kiffin ???? I bet he's shocked that the NFL communicated that to him.

By the way Adams, where are all your Memphis newspaper columnist buddies in the wake of the UT wins over Memphis and Ole Miss? I see y'all aint runnin your mouths against the Vols so much right now.

Huttdawg100 writes:

It really has nothing to do with UT. It's more "karma" than anything. Remember, Kiffin only had a $800,000 buyout, and his dad got a bonus of like 2 million if he stayed at UT until December 2009. Monte got that bonus and left with his son 2 weeks later. So, even though we didn't get our money's worth, in some ways, this is the buyout we were owed.

bigorangegoon:

I agree with completely. Kiffin never really respected Tennessee. We had talent on the 2008, 2009 teams: there was some NFL talent on those teams that were poorly coached. He ran off 14-16 guys including Lennon Creer. He never respected our history. Although I disagree with Mike Hamilton keeping his job, I agree with the point that he made about Kiffin's departure: he was a bad cultural fit.

You don't know what an arbitrator is. My question is why did Mr. Hamilton feel like he had to hire someone like Kiffen? Coach Bobby Bowden new we didn't need a coach like him and said as much. Is Mr. Hamilton really that out of touch? Mr. Hamilton also stated that what has happened in the year or so has make him a better leader. Leader of what?
GO VOLS !!

Hamilton is well on his way to redeeming himself from the Liar Sufer Dude's hire with CDD's hire. When one objectively looks at the state of the athletic program - cash flow, facilities, sports performances, participant GPA's, etc. - it is very impressive what Hamilton has accomplished during one of the most difficult economic periods in recent memory. Take the body of work, not an occasional black eye. Anybody that has ever accomplished anything of value has taken hits along the way in getting it done.

Why is it that it's a "penny for your thoughts" and yet we still "put our 2 cents in?" What happens to all those extra pennies?" Just wondering. :)

I wonder what college football would be like if there was no NFL. I'm sure it would be a lot better. Not a minor league camp for the NFL. Players would stay 4 years and be so much more loyal to their school. There would probably be a lot less of these thugs wainting to play just for a college education.

Damn, now you've given us all something to ponder for the rest of the day. I guess if you give someone a penny for their thoughts and they, in return, put in their two cents worth, you have received a bargain. why is it that we usually feel like we have been short-changed in that situation?

Come on man, everybody knows Kiffin did'nt run his mouth because we needed the attention. It was from errors of youth and being emotionally immature. He's learned his lesson and that's why you never hear a peep from him.
