BOULDER, Colo. — There have been years where Georgia-Tennessee was one of the most expected matchups in the SEC. When these two storied programs have met, normally the victor has emerged with the inside track for a division title.
This year's matchup will have a much lesser reward: The right not to remain winless in the SEC.
"There's a lot of history of us being ranked when we play, and now we're sitting there without a win in the SEC," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. "A little bit different circumstance for each team, but a very important game for both of us."
This is the state of each program: Tennessee is on its third head coach in three years. Richt is the focus of speculation about his job security, especially after a fourth straight loss, this time at Colorado. And, for the first time since 1906, Georgia (1-4) and Tennessee (2-3) will both have losing records when they meet.
"I realize that we're in a position that we haven't been in since I've been here. That hurts," said Richt, whose team will also be seeking to avoid its first five-game losing streak since 1953. "But we can't sit around and cry about it, because if we do, then we're really gonna be in trouble."
Originally, this was supposed to be about the mini-homecoming for Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley. The son of the legendary Vince Dooley was born in Athens and graduated from Clarke Central High School.
But now the main plot may be whether each team holds it together: Georgia after its porous start, and Tennessee after its heartbreaking loss at LSU.
The Volunteers thought they had pulled off the upset of LSU, but a penalty — 13 players on the field — allowed the Tigers another shot at the game-winning touchdown.
The Bulldogs also thought they were on the verge of a win. They were at the Colorado 27 with 1:59 left, but a fumble by Caleb King led to a 29-27 loss.
"There's going to be frustration. We're Georgia, we never expected to (have) four losses in a row to the teams that we lost to," Georgia defensive end Demarcus Dobbs said Saturday. "But you just have to push ahead. You can't turn on each other. All we've got is each other, so we just have to stick together, keep grinding, watch film, and finish the season out on a high note, hopefully."
But that high note will be tough to reach.
Georgia would have to finish 5-2 to be bowl-eligible. And four of their remaining opponents (Kentucky, Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech) currently have winning records.
Richt was asked Sunday if he was worried about the players holding it together or fan reaction affecting the team. He said he wasn't worried on either front.
"I think it's a minority of fans who really come out horribly negative with our guys and this coaching staff," Richt said. "But I think the majority of our fans are true blue and they're gonna support us no matter what. I can say, walking off that field in Colorado, I thought the fans that showed up were phenomenal before, during and after the game. ...
"Everybody's disappointed, but I don't see many fans getting real nasty."
Stripling done, Smith doubtful
Freshman outside linebacker T.J. Stripling is scheduled to have season-ending surgery on his patella tendon, Richt said. Stripling, who has played mostly on special teams, was hurt on kickoff coverage at Colorado.
Cornerback and punt returner Branden Smith is doubtful for the Tennessee game after a reoccurrence of a concussion. Smith missed the entire second half of the Colorado game, and Richt said he didn't think Smith would play Saturday.

At least we've not made a 50 year tradition of dwelling on the bottom. Most people are expecting the Vols to ricochet off 'the bottom' and bound back to where they normally reside.... about 5 positions ahead of Vandy.

First off, I am not happy we aren't winning, but, I am of the opinion that it may turn out to be one of the best things to happen to us in a long time. Big Orange country has gotton so used to being on top of the heap, for such a long time, that we have become big headed and think it is a divine right for us to be such a top dog. We have lost our humility and humbleness, and have become obsessed with winning at all costs, bowl games, rankings and status. Clearing the tail has been wagging the dog, and it's not pretty. We have been EXTREMELY ugly to a gentleman who worked, bled, dreamed, and set up a program that was the enevy of the SEC and the nation. The way Coach Fulmer was treated by far to many posters here is a shame and disgrace. The man spent 30 years of his life working for and building up The Tennessee Volunteers. Lazy-Boy coaches second guessed him on every turn, continually finding fault, never happy or contented. They always wanted and thought we deserved to be SEC champions or national champions. They complained, cried (poor babies), threw temper fits and got rid of the BEST coach we will have had for a long time. They got what they richly deserved in Lane Kifflin and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving crowd! Tennessee got royally screwed by Kiff & Co.! Big Orange has been brought down from the inside, humbled, eating dirt, and getting pushed around like we haven't suffered in decades. When you become so ungrateful, as what so many have become here, then eventually payday/payback comes and it is a mother of a day. You idiots wanted the Dean of SEC coaches turned out, you succeeded. Your reward was Kiff & Co., and you royally deserved each other. Hopefully, some of you Lazy-Boy coaches will have learned your lesson for awhile, and instead "thinking" your smarter than the coach, you will support Tennessee like never before. I am a native Knoxvillian, proud of being a Big Orange fan, but NOT proud of the way people have treated a fine gentleman coach, Philip Fulmer. Did/does he have weaknesses and faults, yes. But he is/was/and always will be what the vast majority of his fault finders aren't and that is HONORABLE! GO Coach Dooley! Go Big Orange Football! And may we remember the lesson of being careful what you ask for, 'cause you just might get your wish. Can/will Tennessee rise again, yes. But we need to learn how to be gracious in victory, gracious in defeat. The way we act when we win or lose, says more about our character than anything else. Quite frankly, with the way the majority of posters here, our character stunk to high heaven. Let us clean up our character, recover our pride and heritage, and go for the high road. Go Big Orange! Go Tennessee!

I will be so damn glad when you Fulmerites just STFU.
Yes, the man contributed a lot to U.T.
Yes, he is gone.
No, he is not coming back.

A certain poster that listed the SEC East standings needs to know that those will change before the season is over..Vandy and Kentucky being ahead of UT won't last because there are alot of games to be played...The Vols will improve as the season goes on inspite of what you say.
I know that there is no way in he!! that I would constantly hang out on a rival's website and post the same tired drivel everyday...Your crack on the 11 on 13 deal got old after about the 2nd time.

The same thing is happening to Georgia. They turned on their coach, sabotaged his recruiting by wanting him fired, and now his team is horrible.
VOLliven2it writes:
We are still Tennessee. They are still GA. It will be a battle. I just hope we win it in their stadium. All records and aside notes mean absolutely nothing when both teams suit up, strap on the helmets and start popping. It should be a great game. I just hope we are ones jumping around at the end.
Would you folk living in the past groping about fomer coaches and all just get in the present? We are now not the Fulmer era or the Coach Twinkie blip. We are now. Let's get behind our guys for a tough, tough month on Rocky Top. GO BIG ORANGE!

Oh we have Vanderbilt talking phooey to us!!! How many times have y'all beaten us? On our worst year in a long time, and your best we beat y'all in your place 20-10. How about your wonderful record against us, 71-27-5, How many bowl games have y'all been to? 4? At Tennessee we don't make DVD'S about going to bowl games because it is expected, not earned by as Bobby Johnson once said "moral victories". As always Vanderbilt's favorite Cristmas carol "I'll be Home for Christmas"

you get dumber by the post. obviosly you are either (1) a FOOLMORE fan or (2) someone who works at kns trying to get responses. not really sure what a no "hubble" is but if your refering to a no "huddle" that isnt what lsu was doing. a no "huddle" is where the same offensive players stay on the field without a "huddle". lsu was switching personel in/out without a "huddle" that is different. btw, the only reason i responded was to see how much "dummerer" your next post will be.

He won't reply back. He is Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt likes to stir stuff up and not have the common sense to say anything back. If I were a betting person, I would say he is prob. watching the Miracle at the Music City Bowl Video for the 1,000,000,000th time. Because that is most likely the only one they will go to for 50 more years.

I live in Alabama around the most arrogant fans you can imagine. Winners should know how to handle themselves and respect our legends. Yes, I still consider our VOL team winners this year with the determination they are showing in spite of their youth, low number of scholarship players, etc. We need to come together as fans and support this team and coaches we currently have. But it should not be at the cost of calling our past legend names. I drive around in Birmingham with my oranges colors and wear them proudly at work. I have seen others in Birmingham with their VOL orange or T's on their car. I am not ashamed to be a VOL fan in Alabama. I am also proud of our past legends including Fulmer, Manning, Colquitt, Berry, Greer, Mayo, etc.
Let's come together as one and support the BIG ORANGE. Go VOLS!
CoverOrange writes:
Actually it would have been a pretty good tactic IF the refs had done what they are supposed to and stand over the ball to give the defense time to sub players, TAKING MORE precious seconds away from the offense. Les Miles opened that door when he subbed his players late. The refs didn't hold the ball.
That the defense captain didn't count what he had coming and going on the field was his fault. Separate issue.
Further, one of your 4 NC coaches is a doofus, another can barely make a bowl game every year.
Last, are you seriously suggesting Kentucky will beat Auburn this weekend? Vanderbilt is calling, they want their diploma back.
vandysucks writes:
Kentucky will get a victory, a moral victory!!!!! Vanderbilt fans make me sick...

So-CalledVandygrad,
And for the rest of us Vol fans think about this.
The year will be 2054.
Where will this So-called-Vandygrad be then???
Why 2054?
Because if Vandy wins every game over Tennessee for 44 years in a row, it will then be 2054 before that bunch can even the rivalry with Tennessee.
And what is so funny is that if this TROLL is still living, ........... every day, every year, he'll still be sitting somewhere running his mouth saying nothing. It will with all certainty prove that the Tennessee Volunteers are in this troll's head.
So-called Vandygrad, the Vols have control over your mind. Accept it, you can't escape it.
vandysucks writes:
2054 and Vanderbilt still sits home for the holidays! 2054 and Vanderbilt might have doubled their bowl total from 4 to 8. L
Timed_vol (Inactive) writes:
this is actually worse for us that UGA is in this condition. athletically they match us (at the very least), and they will be VERY hungry for a win.
Still, I like it that we are on the road. I just think that helps a young team focus, and it's almost easier to play when the crowd is hostile.
ncvol17 writes:
I can only say with absolute certainty, that in 300 years, Vandy will not once win the SEC east. Keep counting the $$ the SEC provides. Like the 'not right' child kept in the basement of old.
pastor_VOLSfan writes:
Go ahead, enjoy your very brief moment in the sun. I don't know if we will win the SEC in three years but I know we will win another SEC Championship in football before Vandy does.

I see UT winning by at least 7. Revenge will be a factor.
Even if UGA wins this and finishes at best 6-6, does anyone really see Richt keeping his job?
I for one say he is gone no matter what. I would not be surprised if he gets the boot mid-season.
UT has every excuse possible to have a down season, but why is UGA so bad? A new QB? We match that and raise a new backfield, complete O-Line, no depth at any position, a walk-on leader on Defense, a FR WR as possibly the most talented player on the team and on and on.
UT will be turned around within 2 years. If Richt is allowed to stay 2 more years UGA will be dropping to the level of that Black and Gold team which does not deserve to play in the SEC. That one is for you ____wannabeGrad.
GO VOLS!

man.... I sense a lot of people( vandy,,, trolls and fulmers) having a bad monday....
the reality is that CDD is our coach for at least 3 years... so all vol fans should hope he is successful because tn football is bigger than gen n, johnny m, phil fulmer and CDD.... I know I hope he is successful.. I'm tired of losing...lol
recruiting and getting 85 sch players back is the key for tn to return to winning... coaching some yes but more about recruiting than coaching...

Vandy is a well coached team and always seems to pull off a big SEC upset every year (Ole Miss this year). But here's the thing - not Tennessee. Tennesse has dominated them. So I'd sit on that bravado of yours, because you have nothing to back it up.
codybain13 writes:
Your sayin we're in last place half way through the season, when vandy has only 1 more conference win than UT. we've played the toughest schedule in the country so far. Vandy got housed by UCONN, and that 1 conference win is the only one ya'll will have this season, so that means ya'll will be in last place. last place ain't determined until the last week of the season, neither is first place. and the only reason your "above being laughed at" is because you've heard it your whole life, if it were any different then you wouldn't know how to handle it. shut your mouth, because your team will NEVER ever win any kind of conference title, or even come close. your an idiot.
