Vols picked to finish fourth in SEC East; Hopson on second team

The SEC announced its preseason media poll and All-SEC Team Monday, and Tennessee guard Scotty Hopson earned second-team All-SEC inclusion while the Vols were picked to finish fourth in the Eastern Division behind Florida, Kentucky and Georgia.

A native of Hopkinsville, Ky., Hopson has started 66 of UT’s 71 games over the previous two seasons. As a sophomore last year, he led the Vols in 3-pointers made (52) and minutes played (27.7 mpg) while ranking second on the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game.

He scored a career-high 25 points in back-to-back games against UNC Asheville and East Carolina last season. Hopson scored a team-best 17 points to lead Tennessee to a thrilling upset of top-ranked and previously unbeaten Kansas on Jan. 10, and he also hit the game-winning jumper against Florida on Jan. 31.

A career .344 shooter from 3-point range, Hopson is majoring in Communications and is one of Tennessee’s most active student-athletes in local community service efforts.

Hopson is coming off an active summer during which he attended the NCAA Career in Sports Forum, the LeBron James Skills Academy and also competed with the USA Basketball Men’s Select Team.

Florida was the choice to win the 2011 SEC regular-season championship in voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members. Each SEC school selected media members that cover their team, and additional writers from across the nation were selected by the conference office to form the voting panel.

Florida was the media’s favorite to win the East with 110 total points (13 first-place votes), ahead of second-place Kentucky’s 95 points (three first-place votes). Georgia (72 points) and Tennessee (71 points) were separated by just one point, while Vanderbilt and South Carolina rounded out the top six.

In the West, Mississippi State’s 118 total points (18 first-place votes) were ahead of Ole Miss’ 84 points (two first-place votes). Alabama was picked third with 82 points. Arkansas, LSU and Auburn round out the top six in the West.

Georgia junior Trey Thompkins was the choice of the media for SEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year with 18 votes. Ole Miss senior Chris Warren (one vote) and Kentucky Freshman Brandon Knight (one vote) also received votes in the Player of the Year voting.

Thompkins, Warren and Knight were joined on the All-SEC first team by Georgia junior Travis Leslie and Vanderbilt junior Jeffery Taylor.

Arkansas’ Marshawn Powell led All-SEC second team honors and was joined by Florida’s Boynton and Parsons, Alabama’s JaMychal Green and Hopson.

Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Each media member also voted for one team as an overall conference champion and a five-player All-SEC Team.

The 2010-11 SEC Media Preseason Poll tips off SEC Basketball Media Day Thursday at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover, Alabama. The 2010-11 regular season begins Nov. 12, with conference play set to begin Jan. 8. The 2011 SEC Tournament will be held March 10-13 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga.

Doesn't leading the Vols to the Elite 8 (further than UK got) qualify as an accomplishment? He swept the Gators in '06 (year of their NC), beat the #1 team in the country twice (Memphis in '08 and KU last year). I mean, that's just the tip of the iceberg, but there's more. Sorry, but you seem like the type that'll never be satisfied until we win a NC.

But that doesn't answer the question....
NO, he didn't make the Finals, but that's a heck of a long way from "accomplishing nothing." That was my point.

Record under Buzz Peterson (61-59),(29-35) in the SEC, 0 tournament appearances, 0 NIT wins. Under Bruce Pearl (126-46), (57-23)in the SEC winning the East 3 times in five years. 5 Tournament appearances 3 sweet 16's and 1 elite 8. You must be ignorant or just an idiot to say he's accomplished nothing.

Everyone stop saying we made it farther than UK last year! WE DIDN'T!! We both made it to the Elite 8 and we both lost in it. Just because they played their game the day before does not mean we made it any further than them!

Yeah seriously. you are a moron if you think Bruce Pearl hasn't done anything. He is a good recruiter and a great on the floor coach. How good the SEC is doesn't matter with the NCAA tourney record he has

I put what Pearl has done for Tennessee basketball up beside any coach in the country. He has taken a program that was completely irrelevant and non-competitive and turned it into a program that competes every year for conference and national championships. He might not win it every year or even at all but at least we are in the discussion. It amazes me still what Bruce has been able to do since he has been at Tennessee.

Butler's conference is weak as well. Are you going to use that logic and discredit their final 4 run? No UT coach has EVER gone to the sweet 16 three out of 5 years. He has won 20 games or more each year and has the best 5 year winning percentage of any UT coach. He definitely needs to keep winning, but man, give the guy some credit. He has taken UT basketball to places it has never been before. I was a trainer on Wade Houston's teams, and believe me we don't want to go back there.

If going to the tournament and the elite 8 is so easy, how many different teams have been to the elite 8 over the last ten years? Then figure out how many teams there are in D1 basketball. Look it up and you will be shocked.

If the media told me the sky was blue, I'd step out on the porch and take a look before I believed it. I have a feeling that Bruce doesn't mind this "ranking". He'll have them ready to prove everybody wrong. The good news is that there is a tournament at the end of the season where one gets to prove it.

On a separate note that I thought you guys might find hilarious. Will Barton (one of the Memphis freshmen and one of six who they are counting on to play regularly) has GUARANTEED that they are going to win a national championship this year. Pretty bold for a kid who has never set foot on a college floor against the big boys. Of course, winning the dunk contest at Memphis Madness might make one think they are qualified to do it, I guess.

Kentucky has a bunch of new one and dones to replace all the one and dones that left last year. UK needs a lot of talent to make up for Calipari's bad coaching decisions.

It could be a tight race between UT, Georgia, South Carolina and Vandy for the #3 spot. The SEC east is very strong this year. Too early to tell.

Hopson has been a huge disappointment. Harris is a great player but is the only inside player. We are very thin.

The big question is will Bruce Pearl keep his job? He lied to the NCAA and is in deep trouble. If the NCAA comes down hard on UT like USC Peral is a goner and the program is in a big mess. IMO

To bad we beat up on each other. Also the fact that you outlasted UK by one day. Lord. Thats the way the schedule worked out. By that logic, your football team is the last to win an SEC game, but has not played the same amount of league games as UK due to schedule.

I pretty much agree with you and your post, but maybe instead of ALL FOUR could be headed to the sweet sixteen, I would have just said all 4 could be NCAA tournament teams. Just my opinion but we need to see how UK will mesh as a team this season, as well as our guys. I pick us second in the east over both UK and UGA and only give UF the slightess of an edge due to their experience.
