5 Big Things for Vols vs. South Carolina

Full event details »

1. Biletnikoff Ballot: Tennessee's secondary should get a vote on the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate receiver. Georgia's A.J. Green and Alabama's Julio Jones certainly bolstered their candidacy against UT the past two games. Alshon Jeffery, you're up.

2. Be a Hero: The Vols need somebody to rise to the occasion and have a spectacular game. This season the SEC has recognized 51 players with weekly honors - offense, defense, special teams, offensive line, defensive line, freshman - and not one of them have been Vols.

3. Keep Your Enemies Closer: Since 2000, UT-South Carolina has been the SEC's most competitive annual series with an average margin of 8.5 points. Six of 10 games have been decided by seven or fewer points and two needed overtime. Today, however, the Gamecocks are favored by 17 1/2 points. How about close for a half? The Vols are good at that.

4. Going Home: Tennessee doesn't cherry-pick as many top recruits from South Carolina as it did in the 1990s, but offensive lineman JerQuari Schofield of Aiken was a good steal. UT hopes to have the redshirt freshman on the field today for the first time since Florida (Sept. 18).

5. Good Vibe: Tennessee has mostly good memories in Williams-Brice Stadium. going 7-2 there since South Carolina joined the SEC. Tee Martin broke an NCAA passing record there in 1998. Bret Smith even returned a kickoff for a touchdown there on Oct. 30, 2004. We mention this because it hasn't happened since and the Vols could sorely use one today.

Agreed but this may not be the best year to do that.

Every thing this KNS sports punk said was true in every word, like it or not. This is currently the worst team I have seen in my 36 years as a ticket holder. We will be very lucky to score more than a couple of td's,if that.Stop bashing what is the truth. It can't be sugar coated. We are what we are and wishful thinking will not change things. It will take good recruiting and Coaching to do that. Both are unproven as of now.

I tend to agree that UT has a good chance to beat SC. Didnt they just lose to Ky for goodness sakes. I agree that youth and inexperience are no excuse now, but the real problem is depth and that problem actually gets worse as the year progresses sometimes with injuries. I would love for this game to start a 5 games winning streak, but I'm not too confident that will happen.

That's good advice - stop bashing what is the truth - so take it yourself. Like the dude you trashed said, this article is in bad taste even though everything in it is true. Just because KNS can post trash like this doesn't mean they should. And the worst UT football team was the 88 squad that started 0-6. This team has talent but no depth and little experience. We have been competitive in every game until lack of depth takes its toll.

Some of the reactions are to be expected from some fan but it still amazes me......They really don't have a clue about college football... I am around some of these folks and when pushed they really don't have a clue about personnel, scheduling, schemes, DEPTH, quality of talent.. etc and the role all play on a season.... its embarrassing to try and have an informed discussion about the Vols with some so called fans... But all teams have these type of "fans"....

I have never bashed this team and the 88 team won out after their poor start. The teams they won out over were not as good as the teams we have left.Kentucky will break the loseing string this year.Yes,we are running out of player depth by the third quarter. That is why I believe this to be the worst team in my 36 years as a ticket holder. It is what it is and that can't change for a couple of years. They are still my Vols and I am still attending the games. However, they still stink wheather you like or not.Not bashing, just like the writer,I'm telling it like I see it.

Excuses dont make me feel any better about getting thumped by Georgia, Alabam, Florida, and Oregon. Or almost getting beat by UAB. UT fans are not used to losing so many games in 3 consecutive seasons and it is wearing on the fan base as it should. There shouldnt be excuses for a top program like UT. Its about time fans hold someone responsible for the shape our program is in now. My vote is for Hamilton.

Yea. But we too were in Boot Camp. These kids will grow up and be men we both know it will happen. Who knows it may start showing this weekend.SS is a great coach and if we can hold our own against him we are in like Flin and this could still be a reasonable year.

HFB - can you read?

i was not disputing what was said in this article. my point is simple. what used to be an article about the 5 things tennessee needs to do to win has turned into a "trash-o-rama."

suggestion. change the name of the article to what i previously suggested or stick with the scope of the report (i.e. improve special teams, suit up the packers defense instead of ours, etc.). they could discontinue the this periodic read all together if the KNS punk thinks winning is futile.

my suggestion to you is practice your reading comprehension.

1977 team was worse.

I guess I'm not sure about that. Coach F was faltering and his last choice for assistants was a disaster with the personnel on hand.OK for the Ivy league but not the SEC. I can't think of a program that had anywhere the turnover problems that UT has had in the last few years and that is not a function of Hamilton as such. Coaching personality Recruits with attitudes etc all played a part as well as College football starting to even out in power. Just look at Mich. They got a great coach and are just now starting to show promise, ND also, they had the pick of recruits forever. We will be OK.

• The tough breaks may be behind us. I have not lost hope that this year’s team can finish with an upswing

B O 61,

Looking back at the posts, I saw some predictable ones, some naysayers, a few optimistic ones etc.

But yours made the most sense. You referred to the QB of the bad guys............given time they will find their receivers. All the way back to Murray of Georgia for instance. He looked, looked, and looked some more.........then decided if he didn't see someone open ( and they usually were ) he'd pull it down and run with the ball. Yes, if no pressure is on the opposing QB, he will do his thing. A C Green, Julio Jones, on and on etc. They will have a career day if we just can't put any pressure on the quarterbacks. The roosters remember last year, so they are clucking and crowing right now awaiting our visit.

Finally, watch us wear the orange pants.....what do you think? If so, maybe that jinx will end. So goes the world of sports in Big Orange Country.

5 Things for KNS

1.AP Ballot. The Tennesseean and the Chatanooga paper should be in the running for Press Awards thanks largely in part to KNS' ability to copy and paste.

2.Be a Reporter. If you can't report the news with maybe an inkling of support just report it unbiased. If I want to hear negative I'll tune in to CNN and listen to them tout Obamacare.

3. Don't make each article sound like it came out of the National Enquirer. Too much sensationalism over not much of nothing(ie. analogies)

4.Being a Hometown Paper. The folks that read these articles love the Vols. Give 'em a little positive to read.

5.Talent. Hire some.

Ky outplayed SC and beat them so why the comment downgrading Ky beating SC? If UT had enough knowledge to draft Cobb, who played HS FB in their backyard 8 miles from Neyland, they may be having a little better year.

Face it, UT blew it with Cobb by not knowing talent and drafting a great player that would love to wearing ORANGE!!We are glad to have him!!! Watch out when we come here!! Cobb will have a chip on his shoulder!!

Excellent point..Talent wise our secondary is average at best but Iam pretty sure we are last in sacks in the SEC..Our front 4 got in Bama's face pretty good but Jones was so fast and wide open he killed us..If you think Bama was good at drawing up good pass plays wait till Spurrier gets going;especially now that he also has a running game to counter..From what Ive seen of USC's offense what impressed me most was the execution;rarely a missed blocking assignment..Our best chance is to score some points of our own..NO 3 and outs and stupid penalties!!!

Hope this not a repeat... Heard the Ducks were going to play Rocky Top everytime they score against the Trojans! I hope it is true! Anyway... Go Big Orange!

mbible1utk#324980 writes:

My five big things
1.) Get penetration- South Carolina can beat us in two ways- Marcus Lattimore running all over us, or Alshon Jeffery beating us downfield. The only way to possibly control both is by shutting down the run, and putting enough pressure on Garcia that he doesn't have time to set for a good throw. Garcia can make mistakes if you press him.

2.) Start fast, and lead by atleast 14 at the half. Another part of making South Carolina one-dimensional is trying to get them behind by enough to force them to abandon the run.

3.) Be willing to let Tyler Bray make mistakes-
Tyler has arm enough to be a good quarterback. Give him the opportunity to go out and win the game, rather than just trying to keep it close.

4.) Nothing free- Gilmore is arguably in the same class as Patrick Peterson. Utilize a similar gameplan to keep Gilmore away from the ball.

5.) Have fun-
Drop the stress, drop the pressure... just go out on the road and put together 4 great quarters. I haven't seen the team smile or look anything beyond miserable.
