Mike Strange, Mickey Dearstone named Orange and White coaches

Mike Strange and Mickey Dearstone to guest coach the Orange and White game

Tennessee’s football team obviously has had a good spring. Coach Derek Dooley apparently feels so confident about his team’s progress, he’s willing to entrust it to inexperienced coaches for Saturday’s spring game.

News Sentinel sports columnist Mike Strange and Sports Animal talk-show host Mickey Dearstone have been selected as coaches for the annual Orange and White Game. Both have coaching experience, but not in football.

Dearstone, who is the voice of Lady Vols basketball, was the Tusculum College baseball coach for two years. Strange was a basketball coach for the Kentucky Wesleyan Purple and White game.

"We got News Sentinel versus talk radio part 2 here," Dooley said. "I'm convinced there's a good football coach on the News Sentinel staff. So we're going to keep searching for them.

"Talk radio put it to them last year. We'll see. We got Mickey and Mike, so that will be a good fun matchup. I'm not sure what their strengths are or what their philosophies are for the game, but we'll shape that during the course of the week."

This isn’t the first time Dooley has thought outside the box for the spring game. News Sentinel sports columnist John Adams and Sports Animal talk-show host Jimmy Hyams were the coaches for last year’s spring game, which was won by Hyams’ White team.

Does anyone know if they are going to have the legends flag football game at halftime this year??? I haven't seen anything about it yet

Just P R job. Not earth shattering, but beats last years Hyams/John Adams show. The media has to make it a party instead of a football game.

This is pretty much all spring games are anymore. You just hope noone gets injured in these games.

Many years ago, here in the Old Dominion, the spring practices ended for one school with a varsity vs alumni game. Varsity usually prevailed. Alumni couldn't wait for game to end to meet old friends and party.

Mickey might bring Heather for a one person cheerleading show !

I heard somewhere, not sure where, that they were. Don't quote me on it though.

If 'Mywayorthehighway' Dearstone gets authority to kick players off the team, the Vols will all have to play both ways next year. There won't 'hardly' be anybody left. Or, Cumulus Broadcasting might buy the station and send in a syndicated replacement coach. At any rate, let's hope to see a single wing play or two, even if everything is called to the extreme right.

For a coach, I'd rather see Heather wearing a houndstooth hat, leaning against the goalpost, watching warmups. That way, at least something would look good.

Dearstones team will play motivated so they won't have to hear him talk before, during or after the game. What a hack!!!

Last year it was Hyams and Adams. This year, Strange and Dearstone.

It gets funnier and funnier.........next year, do you think this would work........Hamilton coaching the Orange and Cheek coaching the White?

pridebone writes:

wow. I wouldn't expect so much vitriol and trolling over "media coaches" of the orange and white game. It's just fun. Lighten up, folks.

If firing the greatest football coach in school history (actually talking Haslem into it) and replacing him with a National laughingstock and then a sub 500 mid major coach, firing the best baseball coach and 4th all time winningest coach in school history and replacing him with Coach Buttermaker of the Bad News Vols, if making the decision to keep Buzz and getting overruled by Haslem, if firing the most successful basketball coach in school history and replacing him with the only SEC coach to never coach an NCAA game, if having 52 associate ADs and no one has the time to monitor and coach coaches on rules, if calling a press conference to announce the violations to the world for some reason, if giving internal penalties when you are going to get the same regardless, if opening your mouth on the eve of the Big Dance etc. if those are not enough to get Hammy fired then Dearstone will be the last straw. How can Hamilton hire a radio guy to be head football coach in the SEC. Unbelievable.

why all the hate for Doc....haven't you guys been listening, he knows everything...this is a genius call.
