With all the troubles at Southern Cal, what does ESPN ask head football coach Lane Kiffin about?
Is his son named for Knoxville.
Really.
Here's the back story.
Lane Kiffin and his wife named their son: Monte Knox Kiffin.
Knox, as he is called, was born Jan 13, 2009. Right after dad came to Knoxville to become head football coach at the University of Tennessee.
Many Vol fans assumed, and it was reported by some traditional media and sports sites at the time, that "Knox" was a tip to Knoxville.
Not so, Kiffin says today.
"He was named before I even got the job, actually. [ Layla] picked out the name because she had seen somebody else had named their kid Knox. I think it was Brad [Pitt] and Angelina [Jolie], actually. She had picked it out when we were still living in California," Kiffin told ESPN's Page 2.
And that's true. Mom, Layla said the same in 2009. But it's also true, the media savvy couple weren't unhappy Tennessee fans mistook the name Knox as short for Knoxville.
In a Knoxville Magazine piece in June 2009, Layla Kiffin said: "[Knox] is just a coincidence. I saw it in a book months before and didn't think Lane would go for the name, but he loved it. We figure we're embracing our new home." Ask Landry and Pressley their new brother's name. "It's Knoxy boy!"

I really dont want anything "Tennessee" associated with Weasel Kiffin! I figured it was short for OBKNOXIOUS!

That's a relief.
TheOpinion writes:
Lane always denied it wasn't after Knoxville. I don't get how this is news or how its new. It's very old and been known for a while.
madmaxvol writes:
So...if it was in an article in the Knoxville Magazine in 2009, why is it in today's Sentinel?
Way to jump on that breaking news story. Well done.

this is news.....
exactly why TN will be a non-factor for years to comes!

Now that's funny! Lane is still a jerk and Layla is still hot....

Yeah, I would welcome Layla back anytime. Lol.

Not funny on OBKnoxious.....son's name. He can't help it who his daddy be. So think through what is funny and not at a child's expense. I don't approve of abusive talk even if the individual is not so pleasurable to others. Anyway have a goodern.
JoeVols writes:
He must be named after the Monte Carlo. Wonder if General Motors is ticked?
tennvolsman19651965 writes:
Lighten up! The kids didnt name himself. And a lot young men are named after their fathers! Good grief, cant believe you think I was bashing a kid. Dont take live so seriously!
TommyJack writes:
Don't understand all this shizz. My memory is that Kiffin was asked about "Knox" about 15 nano-seconds after the kid was born. Said then it had nothing to do with knocksvul.
voloffaith writes:
OK I took off my shoes and I am lighter now....bad chuckle......I didn't believe ewe were bashing the child, but rather making a funny via the child. And if was named after dad..dad's name is Lane not Knox. Again we agree to disagree on this one. Arrivaderci said the lightened up one.

Yawn...
Once again, a story on GVX/KNS falls into one of a few categories:
a) people who hate Tennessee (or are hated by UT)
b) people who used to be at Tennessee but are widely disliked
c) former Tennessee people coaches/players who are still bitter
d) Peyton Manning
e) anything actually having to do with UT Athletics.
And it's "A" once again folks.
Orange_Juiced writes:
Now that ^ is funny.
How about "Hollywood?"
CrankE writes:
I thought maybe the knoxnews.com website was named after Lane's son.
tennvolsman19651965 writes:
Dads name is obKNOXious!
MGVOL22 writes:
Why was this not on GVX247?
OrangePride writes:
So there is some good news after all....good to know that the Kiffins have absolutely no Knox-ville ties whatsoever....just the way we want it! Now tell me again why this is a story that ANYBODY with an IQ abouve two digits would want to know!

They did name something after Kiffin though; if you go to the front of the Tennessee Theatre on Gay Street, you'll see the words "Fire Lane" right on the pavement.

Another stupid and irrelevant article to take up space. Well done News Sentinel. In case you didn't know, Kiffin left in January of 2010.
