Washpun finally cleared

Tennessee incoming freshman point guard Wes Washpun has been cleared academically, new coach Cuonzo Martin confirmed Monday night.

Washpun, one of five players in the Class of 2011, was enrolled and attending classes at UT last Thursday while awaiting word on his final NCAA certification.

"Anytime you sign a big class there's always a chance a transcript can get held up, but we were confident all of our guys would qualify,'' Martin said. "Quinton (Chievous) and Josh (Richardson) were here all summer, and Dwight (Miller) came the second term of summer school, so those guys have had a chance to get acclimated to the campus and be around the staff and the players.

"Wes and Yemi (Makanjuola) were completing their academic requirements at home this summer.''

Martin plans to begin meeting with the players on Wednesday, with the first day of fall individual drills scheduled for Friday.

I beg to differ. Not much is expected from the Vols this year. Therefore, opportunity is EVERYWHERE!

Expectations will be reached at Tennessee. And as usual, NOT at Kentucky.

Ladies and gentleman is this our former poster HIRESANDERS? Also one small question is this. What has been the Kentucky effect versus Tennessee in football for let's say the last 26 years? Jog my memory there so I keep the facts straight.

Just so ewe won't think I'm playing dodge ball I realize the article is about UT bball. Yes it will be and interesting year of hoops for the Vol men,but that's why they play the games. Living in Nashville for 50 years and in Kentucky for 5 I've got a lot of Wildcat friends. While I'm sure they are happy to get over the Gillespie mistake, much like we're happy to be over the Kiffin hiccup, I gotta wonder how happy they really are with Cal's style of one and done'rs. Given KY fans high expectations, I question whether they will ever feel good about the program under this guy. Can you win a championship without the team chemistry that takes more than a year to build? We'll see. I say not and thus, by the time Cal gets KY in trouble, he'll skip to the NBA

Many of us have very high expectations for Coach Martin...eventually. For now, we can read a roster and a schedule as well as anybody. A realist would say that the odds are seriously stacked against high achievement for the team this year. However, I am an optimist so I think the team will be better than many are predicting right now, but I can understand why most are not predicting much.
