What happens if Fulmer takes this job and makes Kansas a contender?
OrangePride writes:
My hope is that Fulmer gets this coaching position and does one heck of a job rebuilding Kansas into a contender for the conference championship. Frankly, it's a perfect spot for him....take over an ailing program and recruit like heck...lol. Anyway, he's a good man and something good is overdue to come his way. I wish him the best! (And say what you like, had Fulmer been retained, the status of Tennessee football would be nowhere near the disarray and sorry situation it's in right now.)
keepitreal4vols writes:
What happens when he starts talking and everyone falls asleep--Does he get a second interview?
volnsc writes:
He is a good man and has many quality coaching traits. I believe he would do well at KU and wish him the best. His worst mistake at UT was hiring the last OC that worked for him.
Vol_USArmy_Soldier writes:
Interesting hypothetical, but it's rather easily dismissed: it won't happen.
TennesseeForever writes:
Good luck to Coach Fulmer.
For Vols fans, times have been better. They will be better again soon.

No ill will to coach Fulmer, but when a program wants a coach they come to you and not the other way round.
volfanlostnbama writes:
Hey, just saw this on football scoop's website! Yes!!!
Washington State: We hear Tennessee special teams coordinator Eric Russell will take the same post under Mike Leach at Washington State.
I can only hope so!!!
thevoice writes:
Agree on all accounts. Would add that the recruiting slipped a bit.
westknoxrepub writes:
I wonder when Fulmer is planning to interview them about the job.
govols1981 writes:
GOOD LUCK TO COACH FULMER,I FOR ONE HOPE HE CAN LAND THE JOB.HIS RESUME AND REPUTITION WILL CERTAINLY QUALIFY HIM.I HOPE KANSAS PLAYS TENNESSEE AND WIPES THE FLOOR WITH US.THIS IS JUST MY OPINON,IT WAS HIS LAST OC THAT GOT HIM OUSTED FROM UT.I THINK IF HE HAD ONE MORE YEAR HE COULD HAVE FIXED WHAT WAS WRONG.BUT,THE PAST IS THE PAST AND WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT NOW.WE HAVE COACH DOOLEY AND I SUPPORT THE COACHING STAFF WE HAVE NOW.THAT IS WHAT A TRUE VOL FAN DOES.SO LET THE BASHING BEGIN FROM THE FULMER HATERS.ITS JUST A SHAME TO HAVE A DIVIDED HOUSE WHEN IT CAME TO COACH FULMER.
jobrando#216494 writes:
Good deal....Phil is not afraid to have people on his staff much smarter then himself. I think the success of his previous staff speaks volumes. I have much more respect for what he did at Tennesseeds now that success has been moved below the bottom with Dooley.
CrankE writes:
I wish Fulmer nothing but the best.
Now for the $6M question, if Fulmer is hired, does UT's buyout get reduced by whatever his salary is at the new employer?
Why....that would free up "salary cap" if the 2012 bamboo crop is bad.
ProfessionalHandicapper writes:
Mike Leach has just stolen UT's special teams coordinator Eric Russell as he will join Wash States staff.
jjsteel writes:
Big question. Does Kansas want him? NO!

westknoxrepub writes:
Obligitory "you're not a real fan" comment for cheering against Tennessee. The house was divided for a reason.
jjsteel writes:
Kansas passed before. I say your right.
Witch_Doctors writes:
Witch Doctor said last week this was the next rumor. Witch Doctor say his camp is too predictable like J Lewis running off left tackle on 4 and 1. Witch Doctor say the games has passed him by but not the bitterness.
Bones never lie.

First he will have to talk Chavis into quitting at LSU... not going to happen. While I like Fulmer, he did not change with the game. Chavis saved him for many years by holding on to 3 point leads coming out of the first quarter.
A lot of coaching spots open this coming season. We shall see if this is a serious move or a way to get his name back into conversations about football.
jimr07 writes:
Don't worry... it will not happen.
rbwusa writes:
If Fulmer takes the job at Kansas he will put in them the secrets of the SEC toughness on the line and run it down your throat. I personally hope he takes the Job and builds a powerhouse as he did and UT. He's a good man and a Great Coach.
bUTchVFL writes:
What happens if 10 5* recruits sign with UT and we win the national title next year under Dooley?

ProfessionalHandicapper writes:
Great article on how chosing a coach with a losing record over a winner with a National Championship is a program killer. At least Kansas was smart enough to admit they made a mistake and make a quick change. UT is mired in muck and too stupid to get out. Sink in that quicksand of Dooleyisms.
bUTchVFL writes:
Do we really have to make personal attacks on Dooley? You can not like his coaching but to make jabs like that are uncalled for.
tennvolsman19651965 writes:
Good Luck Phil, I hope you get the job and can start stomping some of those midwest teams. I would love to see you suceed again. I guess the buyout money is about gone, so it is time to move on.
tennvolsman19651965 writes:
Okay now Peter, time to come back from never never land.
FearlessFreep writes:
Fulmer is a candidate in his and Jimmy Sexton's mind only. I suspect KU isn't interested at all. How many times have we gone through the same thing?
KU has probably had their fill of grossly overweight, arrogant football coaches.
tennvolsman19651965 writes:
Great post about a Great man!
veinsoforange writes:
Let me explain, "KU don't want Fulmer" and if they do hire him, "he won't be successful"!
His days are totally done. They were done "before the end of his tenure at UT".
tennvolsman19651965 writes:
He can have our special teams coordinator, and he can take our kicker with him too. The only team in the country with worse special teams than us had to be Georgia.
veinsoforange writes:
Either way, they won't know what in the "heck" he is tellling them!
arkyvol writes:
i think fulmer's main problem was that he developed a sense of entitlement after the 98 season. the next thing was that he lost his touch when it came to evaluating recruits. add it all up and you get the 2008 u.c.l.a. game. pathetic. given a fresh start (second chance), he might be the ole phil everybody here loved.
orangeman1 writes:
If anyone bothered to read the comments on the article on the Kansas site, fans seem very excited and grateful that Fulmer is a candidate. So, I dont know about the University of Kansas wanting him, but the majority of fans sure do. It was just the UT fans that were unappreciative. The rest of the country realized how hard it was to recruit and win championships at UT. UT fans are just spoiled whiners for the most part.
givehim6 writes:
This was my question does KU want Fulmor? I wish the best for the man. If the two work out CF will need a good staff. You know after this year and the phooey that happened at UK the 7 or 8 win season UT had under CPF looks pretty good right now.

No, thats what you want to happen cause you just cant stand that Fulmer is the most successful coach at UT in the modern era. I guess his 10 wins less than a year before he was fired and the top 10 recruiting class he had ready to sign are signs of failure to you?
Witch_Doctors writes:
Witch Doctor say make sure you click and read the updated version on the same page..more like "IF everyone else turns us down..he might be ok". Witch Doctor not doubt this self generated like most of the sports stories in Knoxville. Witch Doctor say its got fingerprints.
Bones never lie.
*funny these fulmer stories always arise on the end of the second week of the season..
MiserableFloridaVol writes:
Not sure, but I think I'd take Fulmer back in a minute!
jjsteel writes:
Fulmer should forget coaching and enjoy growing older. After all the older we get the better athlete/coach we remember we were.
TheVolMan writes:
I dislike the Pro/Anti Fulmer argument. It's boring by now. Fulmer was all-Vol and took our program to its modern day zenith. However I hated to admit that it was time for him to leave and I'm glad MH (and others) made that difficult decision. I would like to see him coach at KU and succeed. Simple.
underthehill writes:
I hope he gets the job and is successful. I was among those who thought it best he leave TN at time. The way things are now I don't think any reasonable person could say they would not have been better if he had been retained. Phil Fulmer had more class than to do what Dooley did in the Vandy video..Phil Fulmer never lost control of the team to one or two star players..Phil Fulmer would never allow a player to disrespect an assistant coach as reported in re: to Rogers..
SummittsCourt writes:
They need to hire him ASAP! He will build them into a winner. He will succeed at Kansas.
Tennessee with Fulmer 152-52
Tennessee without Fulmer 18-20
crimsonviper writes:
Mangino proved he could at least be competetive at Kansas..I guess you could look at Phil as a lighther and faster Mangino.IDK.
underthehill writes:
In light of recent events..I have to agree. Sorta reminds of the old saying "be careful what you wish for .." ..I think Vol fans were wishing for something different from what they got after Fulmer....and TN just might not have hit Rock Botttom yet..
CoverOrange writes:
That's enough for a first down!
hallsguy writes:
Fulmer is a good man and a great recruiter. However the modern era of football passed him by.Once he lost Cutcliff, it was over.
If I was Phil, I'd enjoy my million plus per year earnings and not bother with coaching. There are plenty of folks in this state that love him and would pay him well to be their friend. That's how he's got the job he has now.
Beyond that, don't think Kansas is that interested in him. Sportswriter's opinions don't mean diddly in the real world.
