Martin says Jarnell Stokes 'great for our program'

Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin announced on Friday that Jarnell Stokes has signed an institutional offer of financial aid and is set to enroll for classes, which begin on Jan. 11.

"Jarnell is a wonderful young man to be around and he comes from an exceptional family,'' Martin said in a press release. "It's great for our program to get a player of his caliber. But it's just as important to bring in someone with his type of character and substance.

"He has a great approach to life and the game, and he's clearly a special talent.''

Stokes, the No. 11 ranked recruit in the nation according to Rivals.com, graduated from Southwind High School in Memphis on Thursday to clear the way for his early enrollment.

Stokes, an honors student in high school who announced his commitment to UT on Thursday, will wear the No. 5 for the Vols.

Well, Witchy, you got what you expected in another post. The Vols did win, but the Bucs surely scared the heck out of them. It wasn't pretty and it wasn't easy but it WAS a win.

I don't know why the Vols couldn't seem to grab the ball tonight, but they just about fumbled the game away. Props to Golden and McRae in the late going, and Skylar was surely nailing them, but--DANG!--the back-court has a LOOOONG way to go if the Vols are going to be competitive in the SEC this year. Not for the first time this year, I wondered just what the guards thought they were seeing on some of those passes.

No. No. Just...NO, you dummy! He has to be one year past the graduation date of his high school class! He graduated ahead of his high school class but it says plainly in the NBA CBA that he can't go to the NBA until one year AFTER that class graduates, which will be in May or June, 2012. And he has to be NINETEEN years old; he only turns EIGHTEEN on Jan. 17, 2012. He will not be drafted in the upcoming class because, luckily for them, NBA GMs actually know their own rules.

Just stop talking about something you CLEARLY know nothing about! You just HAVE to be pulling our chains. It is one thing to be ignorant; it is quite another to refuse to correct that ignorance and, goodness knows, if you would actually READ some of what has already been posted on this subject, you could have. You learn nothing and you forget nothing. SHEESH!

I don't know where he came from, but that Buc PG darn near did us in, not that the Vols didn't give him plenty of help. Wonder how many "stars" that guy had in HS. I'm guessing not many or he would have gone somewhere other than ETSU--uh, no offense, Witchy! It's just that it should be obvious that there are literally thousands of HS kids every year who can play creditable college ball, most of whom will never see even a single star by their names.

I can sympathize with Witchy. I actually attended Austin Peay and took one class at UT-Nashville. However, I've lived most of my life elsewhere and grew up at my daddy's knee following UT--and he never darkened the door of a college until I took him to some Vol games back in the 1980s. He was a soldier, World War II and Korea, as I was, Panama and Desert Shield/Storm, plus some work in Ecuador.

When you're away from the state, the Vols always are the touchstone! One of the greatest packages I received in Saudi Arabia was a tape of a Vol game, from a cousin. I appreciate the education I got at A.P.S.U., but am truly a Vol for Life! Go Vols!

Haaaaaaaaa, you try to rip into a message board(loser status) but end up looking like a dumb fcker. Stokes is still part of the graduating class in May. You must be 1 year removed from gradation so Stokes will have 1.5 years at the very least.
Suck on that.

I follow recruiting verry little. I'm certainly happy about Stokes coming here. BTW I've never been to Memphis...well maybe through it a couple of times. Didn't stop...don't mean anything negative I was just traveling that way.

You need to go drown yourself or something. You know nothing about this young man. He could have stayed and played at Memphis, or Ky, of Conn. even though they had no athletic scholarships available because he qualifies for academic scholarships. You don't make those kinds of grades being a thug. So think before you speak.
This is a good kid and student.
