Four SEC coaches are keeping their fingers crossed as I'Tavius Mathers tries to decide where to play football in college.
The senior tailback from Murfreesboro Blackman High School has committed to Mississippi but said he's keeping his options open with South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Arkansas.
Mathers is The Tennessean 2011 high school football player of the year after also winning the award in 2010. He is trying to decide if he is best suited in new Coach Hugh Freeze's spread offense at Ole Miss.
"I just have to watch a little bit more film and see if I can see myself fitting into their offense or not," Mathers said. "(Coach Freeze) told me (their offense) is 50 percent pass, 50 percent run. He said he likes to run the ball more, but I'm still just making sure I can fit into the offense."

Mister Freeze was that evil guy Arnold Schwartzenegar played in a Batman movie....

not going to ut, not important

But possibly going to another SEC school. Once again: ut loses and the SEC wins.

His name is I'Tavius????????

Since there are now 13 times more scholarships available to non-UT schools than are available at UT, this is going to happen a lot.

I think you just ruined his whole day.
Go Vols!!!

The article heading referred to Mathers planning to put on a show for the SEC. When and where? Anyone know what the author meant?

I live in Murfreesboro. The kid hates UT. Must be a slow day at KNS.

A running back that wants to be the feature player at UT will not work here. Bray is the man for awhile, self-centered RB's need not apply.
WelovePat writes:
Been watching this kid for 3 years at Blackman....he is AMAZING!! UT would be lucky to get him. Runs like the wind. Noone can judge unless they have seen him in person. Go on youtube....he is the real deal.
doh writes:
Its pathetic the kns picked up this story. Who cares where he is going if he isnt coming here. UT is going to have to play against many people from the state who go somewhere else to play.
ProfessionalHandicapper writes:
Thats a stupid comment..If he was going to Kansas I would understand, but if he goes to Vandy you will face him and Kimbrough every year, the two best running backs in the state. It should be important who your instate rival gets when you play them every year.
BIVOLAR_BEAR writes:
I don't care if he's the next "Tony Dorsett" if he's not going to be a Vol..Just sayin'
SummittsCourt writes:
Exactly, all this article does is tell us one more player who will not be a Vol and I could care less.
DooleyNoted writes:
Will be interesting to see where Gunner Kiel goes. Has Vandy and LSU in his final three.

Hey css, ESAD.

We should care when this State doesn't produce that much D1 talent. And when it does the Vols need to be in on them. This kid doesn't have the Vols any where on his list. Whatever spin you put on it that's just not good.
crimsonviper writes:
Have you heard the reason why?
Just trying to understand the mindset.
UTVOLSRROCKN writes:
Keil went to LSU
crimsonviper writes:
It should be MORE important why your instate rival beats you like a parade drum every year,no matter who you recruit.....Goofball.
OrangePsyched writes:
That's a stupid comment. No one is interested in Vandy recruiting. When's the last time that they had a top recruiting class? Yeah they are going to a bowl and yes Kentucky beat us but there is no trend going on here. Vandy has not and never will go to a BCS bowl. Adams on another article talking how Vandy recruiting impacts UT is a joke. Vandy no tradition..no future. The Vols have great tradition and a bright future. VFL!

What does that mean, he's "planning to put on a show for the SEC?" Sounds kinda like big-time attention-seeking. Prima donna?
Scout says 3-star, position rank #37. ESPN says 3-star, #41 position rank. If he were committing to UT, the trolls would be saying Dooley can't get anybody better than a 3-star.

I, too, have watched Mathers play for 3 years- and he is one of the most exciting RBs I have seen at that level. His vision and cutback skills are extraordinary. I understand he is a very nice kid who moved to The 'Boro from Columbia, TN., and who has been a life-long Auburn fan. I hope he continues to improve and goes on to have a nice career and gets as far away from his idiot HS coach as he possibly can.
My concerns: he has terrible hands and struggled as a pass receiver and fielder of punts; he is a very poor blocker; his top-end speed is not great (by SEC standards); and he still tends to make 2 moves when he would be better served to stick his foot in the ground and explode through the hole to daylight...He certainly is worth risking a scholarship- but he is by no means a sure-thing!
