Tennessee Men's Basketball
KNOXVILLE -- Tony Jones didn't need to prove anything to himself.
Yet the University of Tennessee associate head basketball coach won't deny that his eight-game stint leading the Volunteers served as a learning experience.
"I've always been prepared to be a head coach," Jones said after Saturday's 65-60 overtime loss to visiting Alabama, Jones' final game filling in for coach Bruce Pearl, who was suspended by the Southeastern Conference for the first eight games of the league schedule for lying to NCAA investigators.

Will have to bring their best games if they win the next two. Hope in some way they can find that team that beat PITT.

Hey, does anybody know where to get the soundbite from Kesling "There's tha chicken!"? My wife thinks I'm making it up that if ut scores 80+ pts your ticket is worth free chicken. I'd love to have that soundbite...can't seem to locate it online.
Thanks. Go Vols...

Great job Coach Tony Jones! When we were 0-2 in conference play I thought to myself it would be great just to go 4-4 without CBP. However, CTJ did an exceptional job and got us to 5-3 winning 5 out of the last 6 conference games. I wish we could have gotten the W on Saturday we just didn't execute the final play in regulation and didn't score much in OT. Thats 2 times we haven't played well in overtime. Hopefully that serves as a lesson to these young men and coaching staff. It will be great to have Coach Pearl back. GBO and beat those Cats!

I'm glad you showed up Mr. Troll! I was ready to do some Troll hunting! Let me get myself ready: GET LOST TROLL! Only winners on this site!

i wish that they would have found a way to win as well. 21,000 plus is a hell of a crowd for a team that is as inconsistent as this one. kudos to the tennessee fans and screw you mrpearl2.

I agree! However, it will be hard to be the same team that beat Pitt without Scotty Hopson playing. GBO and beat Kentucky!

Pearl! Pearl! Best in the world!
If Bruce can lead us to a championship after sitting out eight games, it will simply reaffirm that he is the best coach in the SEC. And HE IS the best coach in the league!

Jones did a good job considering he was thrust into the situation. I think if Pearl doesn't work out in the long run for us, Jones has earned a try as our next coach.
volaholic45 writes:
IMHO, Jones was entirely unable to work the refs, who on the one hand were not impressed by "his own way" of letting them know he meant business, etc. etc., and on the other knew he wasn't the real guy anyway. The opposing coaches could get right next to a ref and work his ear. Jones was limited to standing far off with his arms crossed and shaking his head about bad calls.

I see. All of the games that the Vols have lost have been because a coach hasn't properly scolded the refs?

It is time for the VOLS to go on a winning streak, all the way to the final 4. Go Big Orange!!!

Pearl's suspension shows how little the head coach matters. We would be fine with TJ. At least he has not embarrassed the school.

Give Tony Jones a break. He WAS the real coach for those games and has a 5-3 record to show for it. We have no idea how the team will respond as Pearl returns. That's the frustration all year, which team will be there and how will they play? Now they face a tough KY team possibly without Hopson and it does not look encouraging. My personal thought is if they stick together and play as we have seen they can play with good d and all, they can hang with about anyone in the nation. But their getting to the Final Four is a tall tall task. GO BIG ORANGE!

Football fan,
The Mr. Pearl troll actually agrees with you. He knows his minimal worth to anything relevant here.
Remember, he just wants some attention to go along with his ignorance. You are correct, kids like this one want to make people think they are an authority on something..........anything.
Just a useless troll..........nothing else.

Maybe THarris should talk to the refs.lol

Yes. Ref. scolding is an art form that Tony needs to aquire.

Here are the facts: Jeronne Maymon was not ready to play for this team. All the players that have been playing have executed a lot better than Maymon did. Kinda similar to Woolridge.

Some very interestinig posts on here (with the notable exception of Mr Pearl, who is about as genetically challenged a person as known to science). Frankly, Tony Jones did a very decent job under the circumstances. He could as easily be 7-1 as 5-3; both losses coming as a result of missed opportunities to close out the game in regulation. I would agree that Tony did not have the respect of the officials that BP would have had and UT got hosed pretty good on a number of occasions. But that aside, things weren't all that bad. I think he will get a shot at the HC job in the not too distant future. GO VOLS!

Crimsonviper,
You just said it. Fact is, KNS actually doesn't care about the trolls like the kid, Mr Pearl. Some say they are plants..........it certainly does make you wonder doesn't it?
Anyway, these 2 upcoming games with Kentucky should be interesting. We never know how they'll go, or what team shows up. U K isn't setting the world on fire themselves, especially away from home. However, my guess is Florida will get theirs when they have the return game in Lexington. The winner of the SEC will have a bunch of losses themselves in the end. Just shows how much talent there is, especially in the East.
Just waiting for someone to knock off Ohio State.
Isn't Tennessee the last team to beat them?
OrangePride writes:
I think you are right in your observation that the number of posters is declining. But I think the fact that many of KNS' more newsworthy items are now on their pay site (at 10 bucks a month) is driving down the number of readers more than moron trolls like Pearl. Trolls and Vol-haters always been here to one degree or another, but when every other article is on the pay site people wonder if it's even worth logging in. I wonder if KNS will even notice or care. Likely not.

If the Vols play their game they can beat Kentucky. If they play like they did against Alabama and Florida they will get run out of the gym. Tony did a pretty good job considering being thrown into the pan with no grease. I question the Alabama game though. We should have won that game and I feel that solid coaching on fundamentals would have won. He should have had the guards work in in to Tobias more and even Brian. We need to work the boards on offense. 4 guys wanting to shoot the ball with 1 guy to rebound will NOT win the big games. Skyler you are 6'3 and can shoot pretty well but when you don't have the ball look for the rebound dude. You have hardly any offensive rebounds because you are WANTING THE BALL TOO MUCH! Brian you had some great games when you plant yourself under the goal....keep your man in front of you and look for the rebounds. There are too many times when Scotty shoots and you are at the head of the freaking key! GO VOLS!!
PeeEllthree writes:
I haven't seen a box score, but I would guess Skylar was 2nd in rebounding against bama behind Harris. He probably had more rebounds per minute played. Skylar just needs to stop jumping towards the goal on his J. Even the fade from the corner he hit is better because you still arch the shot with a slight fade, which he did. When/if he stops jumping forward, he will be a 45%+ shooter. His D is fine, his rebounding is decent and he can penetrate fairly well. At least he goes after loose balls. We have a couple that want someone to get it for them.

Next, it's back to form for him...........he'll be bringing his latest contribution after the Kentucky game. We can hardly wait.....
