Watching from home, Pearl thinks Vols 'got better'

Tennessee didn't get the win against Florida on Tuesday night, but coach Bruce Pearl felt his team took a step in the right direction.

"I thought we got better,'' said Pearl, who watched the men's basketball game from home as he served the second game of his eight-game SEC suspension. "You shoot 47 percent at home, that's good enough to win.''

No panic buttons were being pushed in Pratt Pavilion practice facility on Wednesday, the day after the Gators lived up to their pre-season billing as SEC favorite with an 81-75 overtime win over the Vols (10-6, 0-2 SEC) in Thompson-Boling Arena.

In fact, the five UT players who logged the most minutes against Florida were given Wednesday off after the team weight-lifting session.

"I just thought they got heavy minutes last night and there wasn't much we were going to get accomplished with them nor do we need to get accomplished with them today,'' Pearl said. "I worked with the second unit because we have to get more production off our bench, and those guys needed the reps.''

The time off didn't stop the players from putting in extra work.

"The thing that hurt so much about that game is we put so much into it,'' UT junior Scotty Hopson explained between taking 3-pointers in a solo shooting session. "We went really hard. Florida was just that good last (Tuesday) night; they hit some shots.''

Pearl agreed with Hopson's assessment for the most part, though there were areas he said the Vols could have played better and will need to play better when Vanderbilt comes to Knoxville for Saturday's noon tip.

"A consistent common denominator for us is second-half defense,'' said Pearl, alluding to the Gators shooting .583 in the second half. "It's a combination of being away from our bench, fatigue, teams shooting way too good in the second half for us to be able to win.

"The center ball screen hurt us again,'' he said. "You lay blame everywhere, but our inside players continue to not provide enough assistance to our guards to get through the ball screens.''

UT sophomore Jeronne Maymon, who played only five minutes, said the team knows where Pearl is coming from.

"As a team we need to hone in on the defensive end and the offense will come,'' Maymon said. "I think 0-2 (SEC record) ain't that bad considering the circumstances, but we're going to get on a run.''

Senior transfer John Fields said the team senses its back is against the wall.

"It's an optimistic 0-2; I feel like we can get this win and get back on track,'' said Fields, who with a 3-for-3 shooting performance and six rebounds against the Gators figures to hold the starting spot into Saturday. "We can't start 0-3. We have to win Saturday.''

Pearl said Vanderbilt presents different, but also daunting, challenges.

"Vanderbilt has a real strong post-up game, you've got to know where (John) Jenkins is at all-time, (Coach) Kevin Stallings runs good stuff and (Jefferey) Taylor is one of the best athletes in the country,'' Pearl said. "I think Vanderbilt plays very well going fast. This is not the Vanderbilt team your fathers may remember . . . this is a very athletic, very strong, very fast basketball team. Just speeding them up is not the answer.''

Last Play: Pearl didn't like the result, but he liked the Vols' final play call in regulation.

"I thought Tony (Jones) called a great play, Scotty made a great rim, and we got it to the rim and Brian (Williams) couldn't finish it,'' Pearl said. "I was pleased to go into overtime.''

Jones, the Vols' associate head coach, has assumed Pearl's game-day duties during the suspension.

Vols No. 1: UT dropped to No. 35 in the RPI ratings according to RealTimeRpi.com, but the Vols' schedule strength ranks No. 1 in the nation.

Still In It: Pearl said the SEC East Division is as competitive as he expected.

"The winner of the East is going to have a bunch of losses because of how good the league is,'' Pearl said. "The thing to remember is half the teams are going to lose every night out they play.''

The Rotation: The only adjustment Pearl conceded he's ready to make is how the Vols substitute.

"One of the things we talked about was trying not to get the second unit out there all together,'' Pearl said. "There were a couple times when we had four starters out.

"I'd like to try to have maybe three starters out . . . and mix it up more, that could help (alleviate) the drop off.''

Pep Talk: Pearl's closing remarks to his team after practice were not about basketball.

"You have got to compete with yourself, and establish yourself (in the classroom) and get off to a good start,'' Pearl said. "I don't expect anything less than 100 percent attendance.''

No way that our team "got better last night".

I watch us play and I see the same problem--an offense that's based around perimeter play. This is the major flaw in Pearl's system, in my opinion. Until our bigs (Williams, Fields and Maymon) can consistently hit shots from 10 feet away, then we'll continue to have the same problems. Did anyone notice Florida's big men (Tyus and Macklin) both had inside games?

When you have legitimate big men, then it opens up the perimeter game. Last night (and during all of our other losses), we're trying to win or tie the game by taking outside shots from a lengthy distance. Teams know this and can pressure us all over the court because they know our inside game isn't going to likely result in a score (unless it's a put back dunk or 2 foot shot).

We need to get 15 points and 15 boards per game from our bigs. If we don't, we will not win many games (SEC or non-conference).

haha i didnt read the article but you beat me to my comment! seriously? one question, why so many 3 balls? DRIVE TO THE 'cuss word' BASKET!!! we need points in the paint, not 'hail mary' 3 balls! prove you can make a lay-up and then MAYBE consider the 3 ball. we dont have anybody who is a consistent sharpshooter and our offensive rebounding surely isnt good enough to back-up our missed shots. by the way brian williams is a complete joke! lets not recruit anymore video game wanna be ballers! or for that matter any swippaboy recording artist who have NO intention of playing at the next level! lets get some players who can play at the next level or at least think/hope they can play at the next level! I have been waiting for the past 5 years to hear this. UT players who logged the most minutes against Florida were given Wednesday off after the team weight-lifting session. I played bastball and was voted player of the year and all of those goods things....and I can tell you that to much of the weight-lifting from game to game during the season will destroy your game. You can't dribble, you feel clumsy, you feel tired and you can't shoot the ball very well at all. Just notice what has happen to T.Harris his shot is gone.

Attn all of the people who knock Coach Pearl for his thoughts on the game: who knows more about basketball and the UT mens basketball team? You, who watches the game from your T.V. or Coach Pearl who is the HEAD COACH of the University of Tennessee mens basketball team. If he says the team got better, then im willing to bet that they got better. The man knows what he is talking about!

Vol_n_tear writes:

quote "0-2 ain't that bad". Well, it can't be any worse! I fail to see the logic.

The problem with UT is that they play selfish on the wings and do not make any efforts to get the ball inside to Harris who is the best player for UT. The guards are trigger happy. Harris started also camping on the wings to get his share of 3s. Poor coaching and poor team play are the Vols demise.

On what planet can you shoot 20% from the free throw line and win? How bout they practice free throws? I can't count how many games we've lost at the free throw line. Pearl had never had a big man who knows how to take it to the rim. I am not sure Pearl knows how to coach a big man. Brian Williams gets the ball and instead of taking it to the hole he shoots some sissy short shot that misses. Most big men who have an impact take the ball to the hoop and either score or draw the foul. Scotty is big and athletic enough to take it to the rim but he pulls up and misses too many shots. We continually have too many guys standing outside the 3 point line when the ball is in the air going toward the goal. They need to crash the boards.
I wonder if Pearl has settled into mediocrity. He seen improvement in the Fla. loss? What game was he watching?

4 years ago this team would be undefeated under Pearl. Maybe he needs a year off and Hamilton send him to learn under coach Calipari how to cheat and not get caught???

We have to have a winning record first. I feel about this team the same way I felt about UTFB after the Georgia game, ain't gonna win another game this season. But I don't think there is a Tyler Bray on this bench to come in and turn around the season. With the exception of Tobias, the starters have been playing together for 2, 3, or 4 years yet they play like they don't know each other.

Always like your post PM. Unlike some here, you know BB. I have said before, our bigs are average at best. Thompkins at GA is what a big is supposed to be. Harris will get there soon, but Williams, Fields, Hall, and Maymon, not so much. We need a inside presence in the worst way. And I still don't understand why we don't press more.

took the words out of my mouth. Hopson dumps the ball back to Goins to let Goins take the desperation jumper. Shouldn't Hopson want the ball at crunch time, drive and draw a double team for a dump off, or Hopson take the low percentage shot himself? Is he worried about his hurting his shooting percentage? Looks like he doesn't really want the ball in his hands at the end, except for when we're playing UT MaRTIN. Can you imagine Lofton or JP giving up the rock with the clock winding down inside five seconds? Me neither?

Our size and length is great, but not against quicker guards, who blow by and hit a spot up shooter for an uncontested three or create layups inside once they're past their man. Don't know the solution but Chandler's wide open threes out of his spot in the left corner, and Arkansas dump off passes for layups in the paint were both direct results of the quicker smaller guards on each team, beating our defender and giving the ball up when our big men had to pull off and help out.

Don't know what you do about it except get a shutdown defender (Bone? has Goins shutdown defense gone to?) in there to take on their point guard. Pat had the same problem the last few years dealing with smaller, quicker guards and other teams beat her to death with it, just like the men's opponents are doing now.

Pearl says sthis team can't press. They sure can't play defense but we need to figure out what five guys can press like the old Pearl days and have those guys in the game with 4 minutes to go when we are behind. Out of the 14 players we have, surely some combination of 5 can press. Arkansas had little ball handling skill and pressing would have hurt them. Work with the pressing guys every practice and spring it on someone (like Arkansas game) at a key moment.

We may not have the classic big men who can be counted on to score inside with some regularity, but we DO have inside players who can be effective inside zone defenses by passing the ball. Everybody is so fixated on Brian Williams' weaknesses that they don't give him credit for being one of the best interior passers we have. Harris also has the skills and temperament to go to the foul-line area, take a pass and redistribute it to open shooters.

I agree completely that the Vols can't continue to pass the ball around the perimeter and hope somebody gets a shot they can make. They MUST do more to establish a passing presence on the interior of zones and work more inside-out and high-low. While there are certain places on the court that should be occupied at all times, they shouldn't be occupied by the SAME guy who just stands there. All good offensive teams have constant movement against all defenses, making the defense MOVE with every pass and cut. It is all but pointless to pass the ball around the perimeter if the defense isn't forced to expend energy to defend. Until the Vols learn how to do this consistently, they will continue to stagnate in the half-court offense. As it is now, all we are doing is giving the defense a 20+-second on-court time-out every possession!

Well, if either Hopson or Harris--both of whom are ~70% FT shooters on the season--had made even ONE of the four free-throws they collectively missed in the late going, we wouldn't be having all this angst on here because we would have won in regulation time. Although the defense was woeful at times in the second half, the team still DID play well enough to beat Florida.

Plasticman,

I think you either misread or misundersood my comment regarding having "legimimate big men". If you look at the paragraph before that statement, you'll see that the problem is Pearl's system--it's perimeter-based.

With a perimeter-based philosophy (which is what Pearl had long before he arrived at UT), you're not going to attract & sign legitimate big men because they will neither develop nor thrive in Pearl's system. It's a cyclical problem that only perpetuates itself--BIGS don't come here because they won't/don't develop and then, when you need an inside score, it's not likely to happen since they don't get many looks.

Pearl's system hadn't been seen in the SEC before he arrived. However, coaches and teams have figured out how to beat it defensively, which is to make UT shoot its way out of a slump by firing 18'-22' foot jump shots. It's a great system when shots are going down (like against Pitt and Villanova), but when it's off it is ugly to stomach. And eventually, it will catch-up with you during the season (as it has for UT already).

Still a Vol fan and always will be. I hope this gets cured sometime soon.

I tend to agree with Plasticman and all those who think that CBP does not develop or know how to use his bigs. I see this often in the girls game where a coach gets gals 6ft + but just continually rely on the perimeter guard and get the pants beat off them because other coaches have found ways to nullify that perimeter game. The "bigs" in the Vols org. have a shooting problem. BW is slow, Fields can only swing from the rim when he is 2 feet away and create a little excitement and that is it. Have you watched fields dunk fest on U tube from his meager days at UNCW. Its entertaining bec. it worked in a mid-major. That phooey won't work here. Go figure why he is a Vol.
