Tobias Harris named SEC freshman of the week

Pearl calls Tobias Harris a freshman All-American candidate

Tennessee freshman Tobias Harris was named the SEC's freshman of the week in men's basketball on Monday.

Harris averaged 8.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals inl wins over LSU and Ole Miss last week.

“Tobias is a legitimate freshman All-American candidate,'' UT coach Bruce Pearl said at his weekly press conference on Monday. “He has an unusual maturity for a freshman, and a great feel and understanding for the game.''

Pearl pointed out that Harris is averaging close to a double-double through Tennessee's six SEC games with 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest.

Harris rolled his left ankle with just under 13 minutes left in a 74-57 win at Ole Miss on Saturday.

Though Harris returned to the game, Pearl said the 6-foot-8, 226-pound power forward has received treatment on the ankle and has been placed in a protective boot.

“He may get out of his boot this afternoon and see if he can do some movement and exercises,'' Pearl said Monday.

UT (14-7, 4-2 SEC) returns to action at 9 p.m. Thursday at Auburn (8-13, 1-6) in a game that will be televised by ESPN2.

Congratulations to Tobias.

Harris looks like an All-American BB player for sure.

Hopson is looking like one too. Less gloating and moping. More work ethic and team oriented.

Love it!! I'm not sure Williams didn't earn this one after the last win but you could argue that Harris has deserved it every week.

This is becoming a regular occurrence with Tobias.

He does so many little things on the court that don't show up on the stat sheet.

Our best offensive play Saturday was to shoot and let Williams rebound and put back a layup! The defensive energy is the key to this teams success! I'm glad Harris is here and hope he stays healthy! I liked that coast to coast play he had Saturday! Not many power forwards can do that!

Except it was SEC "Freshman" of the week. BW has been around a little too long for that.

LOL and I give people a hard time when THEY don't read the article. I was just thinking of Harris as player of the week I guess.

I surely hope Tobias' ankle isn't too bad. With his patience and smooth gait, he should suffer less drop-off in his game than some speed-burning high-flier. Just have to hope the pain isn't too bad and he can avoid further injury to it. Gotta have him in tip-top shape when they go to UK! Need to have him at 75% at least against Bama. We'll need him on the boards against a physically-imposing Tide bunch.
