Potential applicants for the University of Tennessee’s vice chancellor of athletics opening have until Sunday to touch up their resumes and express interest in the position before Parker Executive Search moves on to the next step in the hiring process.
That’s at least what the search firm, which UT hired last month for no less than $90,000, would prefer, according to the “Current Opportunities” page on its website.
All “letters of nomination, applications or expressions of interest” are requested for submission to Parker, not UT — a move that aids in keeping the names and associated documents confidential.
During Georgia’s athletic director search last year, which did not involve a search firm, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution acquired the names of nearly 50 applicants for the position through an open records request.
The News Sentinel’s recent open records request to UT for any e-mails, letters and resumes that expressed interest in the open athletic director position came back with zero related documents.
According to its contract with the university, Parker is by no means relying exclusively on its online job posting to nail down candidates for the position. But the posting does provide some insight into what basic requirements Parker and UT desire.
Namely, experience. Lots of it, and the right kind.
“A substantial record of progressive and relevant experience in the management of intercollegiate athletics programs is required,” the posting reads. “Knowledge of the (NCAA) rules and regulations required; knowledge of the Southeastern Conference programs, rules and regulations is preferred.”
Strictly following those guidelines would eliminate a number of names that have been bandied about since Mike Hamilton resigned last month, including former Vols quarterback Heath Shuler and former football coach Phillip Fulmer.
Daniel Murphy, UT’s NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative, Chairman of the University Athletics Board and a member of Cheek’s search committee, said Thursday that no candidates have been eliminated from consideration.
Whoever is hired for the position will fall into the university’s “75” pay grade category, which is reserved for senior management. Salaries are determined by market value in the 75 category, UT vice chancellor of communications Margie Nichols said Friday.
A bachelor’s degree is required for the position, but an advanced degree is preferred, according to the posting.
Among the responsibilities that will be assumed by whomever fills the position is ensuring the “highest standards of integrity in academic, financial and business matters, as well as compliance with the University, SEC, NCAA rules and regulations and state and federal laws.”
Among the skills required for the position is an ability to “shape, build and sustain UT athletics national reputation.”

I wouldn't think UT would want an AD to "shape, build and sustain" an athletic reputation that right now, is in the ditch.
Until then, I would think that part of the criteria should be to RESTORE what was previously a "national athletics reputation."

Promote Dooley to AD and hire a big name football coach who can make us contenders again.

Bodeane, you have so much time on your hands that you better just start worrying about getting any job. You gotta get out of that basement.

I'm not even a Vol fan, but some of you guys are really under estimating Dooley, the man can coach. The Vols are 1 or 2 years away from being scary again. Mark my word. This coming from a Bama fan

Now that's funny right there...

LJS,
Have you thought about this? Try to find a topic, any topic..........and see if there is just one that doesn't have people like this Bodeane, zz, SEC 1, Kiffin the kid, CSS, etc, on it.
It's a shame we can't find just one topic in which we will not find a bunch of clowns such as these.
The KNS could come up with a recipe for sweet potato pies, from the Vol coaches' wives, and trolls would be all over it.
Once again, Jack Lail looks the other way. He isn't answering Navalorange's good question about whether the KNS is planting these Kiffinish people here. It would be nice to have an answer.
Anyway, U T is hopefully going to find a very good A D.

It doesn't surprise me that a Bama fan wants UT to keep Dooley. You probably wish we had kept Bill Battle.

I don't see how this eliminates Coach Fulmer. He ran an intercollegiate athletics program.

Read carefully,"Shape,BUILD,and sustain." Middle word is BUILD! Then when built ......SUSTAIN. Do you get it ? Shape and build is the means to,as you put it,RESTORE.

I find it interesting that ewe are so familiar with all these supposed southernisms. Me thinks ewe be so due to your upbringing. Not saying these are reality in the south, just the way some like to poke fun at us. Ya know like do we have in door plumbing etc. Also Coach Fulmer(not your disrespectful name) does not need a job since his severance pay was decent and then some. Oh btw that was Mike Hamilton and not the wimpy attempt at a cutesy name ewe tried. You seem to have a problem with respect and I wonder how far it goes in your daily life(when away from the keyboard.)

Looking back, I think, for a large segment of the UT fan base, that Lane Kiffen would be the ideal AD. Give em what they want.

Would that be the National Reputation that Hamilton gave us? That would be loserville and NCAA dog house. Many can get that done. He did.

Typical tunnel visioned, low intellect, predictable response from you. And you do what all narrow-thinking people do; you choose a few individual occurances and try to make those frame the entire issue. Let's re-examine the issue in a wider context. A)Dooley took a totally depleted team and GOT THEM TO A BOWL. B)He had both UNC AND LSU absolutely beaten on the field during regulation! Something YOU said could never happen. C)When athlete's have significant outside issues, ALL coaches allow them time to sort them out....at least all GOOD coaches. D) Oh and finally, let's see now, suppose you are building a program....who do you make your first round choice? Your huge Vandy "get" OR Justin Worley? Or how about Arnett? I could go on, but even you should get the point. For most of us here, we kind of think Dooley did OK as compared to Vandy on recruiting. So take your lame ideas and arguments elsewhere. You're an idiot and we'll just leave it at that.

Tennrich,
Great observation friend. Many of us are catching on. There may be 25 messages and a good portion of them are, well........I won't even say the word.
By catching on, I refer to just what you said, identifying who 'they' are and skipping on down to somebody worth reading.
Very disappointed in J Lail, to say the least. Jack must be playing golf somewhere and not noticing who's doing a number on GoVolsExtra.

Missed the call this morning as I was on the links. I hope they don't expect me to work Saturday mornings, do they? I mean, the UT football coaches don't have to work Saturday's, so why should the AD?

Give it just a bit more time. At some point, we'll be kicking the Commode Doors out of the SEC and they'll have to tie in with Rhodes and Sewanee. No more welfare checks for you!

Yep we were beating Georgia and South Carolina under Kiffy and getting negative headlines on a daily basis. Kentucky football sucks big time but I have not heard anything bad about them recently. A lot of U T's mess started with Kiffy so if you want Kiffy Boy back apply for the A D job, get hired, and bring Kiffy Boy back and let him finish the job he started of destroying U T football.

all those players were recruited by Lane Kiffin, the coach who recruited them. Simply false. He won 152 games, 2 SEC crowns and a national championship. Less than a year before he was fired he was in the SECCG.
Coach Fulmer was shamefully treated by the university.

Walt, is your last name Fulmer? Your buddy did indeed make us a laughing stock. And shamefully treated to the tune of $6 million dollars. Shame me any day that way. Get over your manlove or move in with his fat arse

Kiffin, Pearl, Hamilton and maybe Cheek and other higher ups made UT a laughing stock.
Oregon has joined a long list of major programs with serious compliance issues, including UT.
The one person at UT NOT involved in making a -UT- a "laughing stock" is Coach Fulmer. People need to see that for the kudo it is for CPF.
