My reaction is this: if it helps in the hearing on Saturday then great. I fear it could be an indication that UT knows its sanctions will be harsh and are punishing Hamilton now.

Funny, all these two-faced fans dissing Hammy were ecstatic when he hired Boy Kiffin and Bruce Pearl. If the "big boys" are smart, they will elevate David Blackburn to the post ASAP. He has vast experience in several different positions with the athletics department and the football team. Good luck Mike, you are a much better person than most of the people who are hating on you.

Mike is a wonderful man who struggled as AD these past few years...a few mistakes for sure. I'm sad for him and wish his family the best. Thanks for your years serving the Vols, Mike.

I sure hope his replacement is a good hire who can stay for a long time. Stability sounds good.

interestedperson writes:

This has to be about the NCAA sanctions and I certainly hope this move is to blunt some of the sanctions. Had Pearl been fired immediately, the then University would have looked proactive. However, since Hamilton backed him and he later was fired, it looks to the NCAA as if there is systemic problems and that lies in the control of the AD. Lots of new faces around the Athletic Department - Just get busy, coach hard, and Go Vols!

espender#273698 writes:

I'm sure Mike Hamilton is a good person. That being said, he has nearly reduced the Tennessee Athletic Dept to a diaster area. He might could raise money, but the dept wasn't generating near the money that it should be. Ciao, Dude!

Condredge Holloway or Phil Fulmer. Either would do a great job and both are loyal to Tennessee!

VolzsFan writes:

What is Hammy's final legacy?

He inherited the best baseball coach in school history:
He stabbed Rod in the back by holding funds. He talked to the selection committee to keep them out of the NCAA tournament the year he fired Rod when in any other year any team with that team's accomplishments would have been selected. He hired a fool and gave him the facility changes that Rod had done with an architect. That fool is now fired.

He inherited the most successful football coach in school history:
He worked Haslem for 2 years to remove Phil the first chance he got. He withheld funds for hiring assistant coaches. He fired him during the season and he had already had a deal with Kiffin in place. They let Kiffin do whatever he wanted to do with no oversight and has forced UT into the NCAA cross-hare. That cost Tenn a win vs Wyoming and if anyone has ever played a sport they would understand the mental aspect of playing any game.

He decided to retain Buzz:
He made the decision to retain Buzz on that Saturday. Haslem fired Buzz on that Sunday. Haslem told Hammy to get out of the way and had Grunfeld hire a basketball coach. He became the most successful coach in UT basketball history. In spite of having 50 associate athletic directors, he was unable to manage his coaches including Pearl and their phone calls. It is his job to keep all coaches on the right track. Every coach will try and straddle the fence in the rules department. Than he ruined the NCAA tournament by opening his mouth.

His actions led the track coach to stay ahead of the posse and leave. He said he did not want to end up like the previous coaches.

An AD needs to attract, hire and manage coaches. Fund raising can be done by anyone. Managing budgets are done by accountants. Any coach will take the Hall of Famers calls and be proud to work for him. Any accomplished coach in America will laugh at Hammy. That is why we have coaches that need a job or need a break.

He has been the biggest failure in UT athletic history. Good luck at Garner Web.

Go to Kentucky and get their athletic director. He trained under Doug Dickey, and he's been at Lexington long enough to know "how they do things" up there.

I'd go to Kentucky, but not to Lexington. We need to go a couple hours west to Louisville and get Tom Jurich.

I have called for Mike Hamilton to be terminated since March when I determined that he really had screwed Bruce Pearl and the Basketball team. I felt his acts were two faced and not necessary. I still feel that We would have come out better by retaining Bruce and taking our lumps. UCONN did not step out from underneath Jim Calhoun and they ended up getting moderated punishment and being able to retain a great coach. I still believe that if the additional information had not been discovered against Jim Tressel that Ohio State would have stuck with him. But let me say this, If Hamilton had fired Bruce at the very first that would have been acceptable. The fact that He made a pledge to stand behind a man, and then when it was to his advantage find a minor infraction that, based on other Coachs statements, happens everyday and then say that was the reason was unacceptable. Jimmy Cheek should be terminated as well for the same.

I hope Tennessee will take this opportunity to hire someone who is Tennessee through, and through. I believe that a Diploma with THE University of Tennessee on it means something. I have one that I would not take anything in the world for. I would love to see Phil Fulmer in this position. No one Loves Tennessee anymore than Phillip does. Conredge Holloway would also be a good choice. Regardless, I know that there is a Tennessee man out there somewhere who can do this job and do it well.

Fulmer is the best choice for this AD position. He knows UT inside and out and he is loyal to the university. He is well liked by the BOD's at Ut and could do a great job in stablizing the situation that exists there at this point. We need a man that is very familiar with the football program and that can bring back the pride at UT that we so desperately need at this point. We have had enough of people that has no association with UT. Bring back Fulmer.

Give Tennessee credit for the timing. This is the equivalent of a sex scandal the week before Election Day (it can change the outcome). From what I understand, to put it simply, is we go get drilled on everything we did wrong this week and give a response. Then, we find out maybe a couple months later our punishment. We can go into the meeting now saying ALL offending parties are gone. Nice move.

But, I don't hate Mike like most of you. He made the tough call and the RIGHT call on Fulmer that a pansy would not have the courage to make. Bruce Pearl was a good risk. Buzz Peterson was stuck in 1st gear. Kiffin was an attempt at a Hail Mary with the staff he brought in. Kiffin was a J-A, but you have to admit, his machine can recruit even with serious sanctions. Dooley and Martin were smart hires though not glamorous.

I really did not have a big problem with his hiring/firing. But, he did not do so hot at monitoring his folks. I think he learned his lesson, but it cost him. His watch was turbulent, but we are going to come out of this ok...UNLESS we make a dumb hire for AD. By that, you KNOW who I am talking about. He made poor personnel decisions as a Coach, so you can expect the same as AD.

I say Ernie is an excellent choice, but I would vote Pat Summit over anyone. She's a winner. She's a Vol. She runs a clean program. She will chew that @$$ if necessary. And, she has been the best PR for UT Sports for 25yrs.

However, if they're going to continue to pay him, why not shift him to a 'fundraising' position. It would still be a good job for him, he would do well at it, significantly less stress, and he's not ready for another AD position anyway... seems like a good fit to me.

And Fulmer for AD??? He11 to the no!!! Bad idea! Let's do a national search and get someone good and proven... not someone who's familiar.

No way Pat Summitt is going to be the next AD. Though she would do an exellent job and your points about her are valid. I would rather her stick to running the women's basketball program for the next 10 years or so and get well past 10 championships!

I have connections inside the athletic dept. and technically Hamilton was fired the week before the SEC meetings. He was given the choice of resigning to save face, if that is possible given the mess his dept is in, with a buyout on his contract and could stay on til the end of June or he would be flat out fired and may have a fight on his hands to get any money owed him. From what I have been told there is way way more to the NCAA investigation than is being told and that baring a miracle UT is gonna get hit and hit hard as far as the basketball part is concerned. Football may come out in fair shape.

I dont know if Hamilton was pressure into handling the Fulmer situation the way he did. But that is when I started dismissing Mike, not when he hired the Weasel. I still hold a grudge against Jerry Jones for treating Tom Landry in the same manner. Whether it was time for Phil to leave or not is one thing, but you just dont treat a legend in the manner that he was treated.
