Rocky Top basketball league deeper this summer

The draft for the fifth annual Pilot Rocky Top summer basketball league will take place at Rays ESG at 6 o'clock tonight.

The league, which features current, former and future Vols men's players, tips off at Bearden High School at 6 p.m. on June 15 with a six-game season that runs through June 29.

Andre Whitehead, the league commissioner, said six teams will fill out 10-man rosters from a pool of more than 100 available players.

Defending league champion News Sentinel, coached by Zane Duncan, returns as a sponsor, along with Choice Spine, Richardson Construction and DeRoyal Industries. The two new sponsors are Ralph Brown and Associates and R. Larry Smith Insurance.

"(Tennessee) Coach (Cuonzo) Martin was very familiar and supported the league concept, because where he's from in St. Louis, they've had a similar league going on for a long time,'' Whitehead said. "This year's league promises more balance and depth.

"I don't think there's a clear-cut No. 1 pick, like Scotty Hopson was last year, and from one-to-60, we've got more talent than we've ever had.''

All of the returning UT players will compete, in addition to incoming freshmen Josh Richardson and Quinton Chievous.

Former Vols Wayne Chism, Tyler Smith, Melvin Goins, Dane Bradshaw, Steven Pearl, Jon Higgins, Damon Johnson and John Fields also are on the draft board.

Former European star and league MVP Boo Jackson returns, along with former local high school stars Tony White Jr., Lester Wilson, Ty Greene, Dwight Tarwater and UT walk-ons Brandon Lopez and Galen Campbell.

In addition to UT, other collegiate players from Tennessee Tech, Chattanooga, Lincoln-Memorial, East Tennessee State, UNC-Asheville, King College, Tennessee-Wesleyan and Maryville College will represent their respective schools.

Wrong again. Bradshaw 1st. Pearl 2nd. These two hustle more than anyone, therefore they were division 1 basketball players.

This is the same brand of basketball these kids would be playing whether anyone was watching or not. These types of summer leagues are all over the country. If any of these guys are playing to develop their game, then obviously they're playing in the wrong place. I think the RTL is more for the fans.
