The Hartford Colonials signed former University of Tennessee tight end Jeff Cottam to a contract for the 2011 United Football League season.

Terms were not disclosed. Cottam spent the 2010 preseason with the Cincinnati Bengals after signing as a free agent following the NFL draft. His brother is Kansas City Chiefs tight end Brad Cottam.

Used mainly as a blocker, Jeff Cottam had seven receptions and one touchdown in four seasons with the Vols.

"He's a big tight end blocking guy," said Colonials director of player personnel David Turner. "It's almost like adding another guy to the offense line for running plays. For a big guy, he has soft hands."
