Big man Jarnell Stokes has sights set on UT

Jarnell Stokes, one of the top men’s basketball recruiting targets in the nation, still has Tennessee in his sights as a possible destination school.

Stokes will be in Thompson-Boling Arena on Sunday for the Vols’ showdown with Kentucky, making his second unofficial visit to the UT campus.

“I was there for the Alabama game, too,’’ the 6-foot-9, 245-pound Stokes, who attends Central High School in Memphis, said Friday night in a phone interview. “I’m coming to enjoy a good game and catch up on some relationships with the (UT) coaches, players, and my brother, who goes to Tennessee.’’

Stokes is ranked No. 9 in the nation in the Class of 2012 by Rivals.com, and the Vols have been active and at the front of his recruitment.

Stokes said he has followed the pending NCAA case with the Vols closely.

“Whatever happens, it won’t affect me,’’ Stokes said.

Stokes said he’s not sure what to expect from UT against the Wildcats.

“It’s been tough,’’ Stokes said. “But Tennessee can also beat any team in the nation.’’

That's because attendance is based on ticket sales. Programs do tend to exaggerate the size of the players and their talents. Just look at KY. Everyone thought you were the class of the SEC. How's that working out for you? One thing that is not exaggerated and that's our football team beating your team like bad children at K-Mart even when we are in a "rebuilding" year.

Why do we rarely see you during FB season? You are probably a FL or Bama fan during FB season. Ship jumper! Hahaha! All joking aside cat scratch...why do you come to a TN site? Perhaps you have no self confidence and the way you feel good is attempts to tear someone down. Are you bored? Get a hobby. I am never bored enough or bitter enough to go to a wildcat site. GBO!!!!!

Easy now, CatScratch. I don't know anything about this recruit, but before you blast UT you should probably take a couple of lessons about being misleading. Consider a couple of things, please:

1. UK Football. In its effort to field a "competitive" football team, I bet UK has never, ever, ever exagerrated the height and weight of any of its recruits or players.

2. UK basketball. Eddie Sutton and John Calipari. Under the Eddie Sutton reign, an enormous amount of flagrant NCAA violations occurred--you can read the Sports Illustrated story from 1989. I've got a feeling you might have thrown that issue away. Many in the sportsworld believed that UK should have gotten the NCAA's "Death Penalty" for those infractions. College basketball had never seen a program doing what UK was doing when they were caught.

Under Calipari, it's just a matter of time. Both schools he's been to have vacated their Final Fours. The phrase "Teflon John" certainly applies because nothing sticks, but eventually it went.

Catc scratching himself,

Why does a Tennessee player's weight and turnstile figures bother you so much? You need to pull up your tent here and get back into bluegrass territory.

But first things first. Rather than worry so much about how many come to the games in TBA or how big a H S recruit for the Vols is, you need concern yourself with the game Sunday where U K isn't fond of winning on the road, and possibly another loss to the Lady Vols should Vandy give you that opportunity.

That's what you need to think about, while camping out in your tent on GoVolsExtra.

Because MANY of these kids are enrolled in the Rivals database by the beginning of their Jr. seasons. I'm guessing he's grown since he first made his Rivals account. So there's a good chance they asked the boy how big he was and he told them. By reading the story it sounds as if they didn't go to Rivals for his info. Sounds to me like they have spoken directly to the kid.

On the other hand, I hope since we play you guys tomorrow that doesn't mean we have to hear your gums flappin. I've tried to tell some on here that you were worthless. They didn't want to listen. Maybe they will now.

Not only is the Nations #9 C a Tennessean, so is the Nations #9 PF http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&... and both will likely be wearing Tennessee Orange in 2012.

I saw those friends of yours doing their headcount at a game. They had their shoes and socks off and seemed to be tabulating on their toes. Together they determined that there were eighteen fans present at the game.

UT uses scanners, those track attendance just like the turnstile. Nobody gets in without their ticket scanned.

Doesn't matter if its tickets sold or people in the seats, UT still packs the house either way most games.

Good point. However, his size is all over the place. I do know that every school in America wants him and that is good enough, no better then any recruiting rating. As for attendance, every school in the nation turns in to the NCAA tickets sold. Hate to break that to you. Now, after that beat down Tenn will issue UK today, Tenn will have finished ahead of UK in 5 of Pearls 6 seasons. Get some.

If Pearl survives his ordeal with the NCAA I believe he will see more top High school Memphis recruits head to UT. Not many folks in the Bluff City are happy with the direction of the Tigers under Pastner. As for Stokes I believe he is Knoxville bound.

I hope you're right about Stokes. He sounds like a good talent and we will need more big guys next season. Would love to see us get Stokes, Poythress, and Ajayi, but that is a pipe dream. If we could get Stokes and pull off Ajayi, that would help tremendously in the middle.

However, I believe we won't know anything until after Pearl's fate is decided.

Tony Basilio is saying that this might be Pearls last game in TBA, the last time we see the orange jacket. At first, I was pretty upset about the embarrassment of the NCAA investigation and accusations. But I love Pearl. I'd rather stick with him through this than have another Buzz Peterson come through and wreck the house that Bruce built.

So, I'll keep my fingers crossed that Pearl stays and that Stokes plays alongside Tobias Harris for the next few years.

Cat Scratch,

It seems attendance for most sporting events is the paid tickets. Some do count turnstile. But paid tickets is the usual. So,TN is not out of the norm in doing that. Are you sure KY bases it on actual turnstile numbers? Just curious.

Pipe dream?? I disagree. Stokes and Poythress are Tennessean's and Ajayi is ready to sign, plus Jones and Ware are a done deal. In addition, to Ajayi, CBP needs to sign one more 6'10" talented inside beast for 2012. Things can quickly turn in the Vols' favor w/ one solid class...
