Ron McKeefery hits the ground running, gets quick results at UT

An interview with UT's Ron McKeefery

Maybe 30 minutes after officially starting the job, Ron McKeefery led his first workout with Tennessee.

So much for settling in.

UT’s new strength coach apparently hasn’t slowed down since, and in his first meeting with the media on Thursday morning, McKeefery rattled off an impressive list of accomplishments for the Vols in just about eight weeks since he took over.

“Since I’ve been here, these guys have made huge strides,” McKeefery said. “We’ve increased our bench press by 25 pounds a guy, our squats are 40 or 50 pounds in increases, we’ve got significantly faster -- we’ve doubled our speed in the areas that we wanted to improve.

“We’ve made some huge strides, but we’ve got a long way to go still. I’m looking forward to keeping the training going through spring ball and obviously into the summer.”

More details later online and in Friday's News Sentinel.

This is the guy who is going to be responsible for the performance next season as much as anyone. Hopefully between his workouts and some added depth, they won't fade in the second half.

Wasn't the new strength coach in the special forces?

Something tells me that, "answering to the fans" doesn't keep this guy up at night.

Read elsewhere that Bray's attitude has improved 100%. Wonder what that meant.

Rumor is that Alabama is disputing this and will file a formal complaint tomorrow asking for a review of results.

That's funny since Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups. He pushes the earth down.

That will be judged more by depth instead of strides in the weight room. No team can go four qtrs without quality back ups!!!

Maybe we need some better educated fans?
just sayin

Go Vols

My buddy and I were discussing the UT Strength coach last weekend. Is McKeefery just over the football team or over all athletics? If he's jsut over football, does the basketball program have it's own strength & conditioning coach?

I think the same things were said about the previous strength coaches. Its almost like there is a canned response when talking about these guys from the players. When Wylie left, some fans thought it was bad for the program. They are just guys to watch and lead the workouts. Yes, the players have to be conditioned but having a strength coach meet with the media is a little overkill.

Name a UF running back who had more yards last year than Tauren Poole. If Jackson and Brewer return, our secondary returns all of its starters. UF doesn't have all of their starters back. Even if one of those two don't return, Prentiss Waggoner started half the season at safety, and we still have the most starters returning. Also, Herman Lathers, Greg King, and Austin Johnson all have starts under their belt, with depth being built. Dog on Dooley all you want, the fact is that he STILL beat Vandy. Vandy can't even beat a first-year coach who has never defeated a team with a winning record. Vandy football = futility.

I'm a John Stuckey fan, who was all about strength and conditioning. His beefeaters were the ones who used to push the other guys all over the field and move mountains. There was fierce competition in his football weightroom. It was a matter of pride who held what records, etc. And it showed on the field.

This is the first time I've read any S&C coach since Stuckey actually mention measurable weightlifting improvements. Looks like he has the right metrics in place.

In my view, one goal and one goal only for a S&C coach for an SEC football team: to field the strongest team with the most stamina.

I wish this guy nothing but goodness. He's arguably our most important coach until September.

Because the last 2 games were actually quite close.

oops not done.
Yeah Vandy's been closing in on UT for the past 40 years one baby step at a time I guess?
Kentucky- I don't even know what the streak is at this point, 25 in a row? I guess they're bound to win one eventually just like Vandy did, these teams ARE NOT getting any better, they are staying the same. UT has been in a slump and are coming out quite well with a top 15 recruiting class with a second year coach
And...
Rb- Tauren Poole had over 1000 yards last year so RB is set.
Dbacks- no one's left except for Jackson who is supposed to come back
Lb's- might be the only week spot, I'll give you that one.
and we beat Ole miss last year so that's another SEC team bucko.
UT will win 7-8 games and that's just fine. We're rebuilding, it takes time, you've given up hope on your team's rebuilding because it's taken decades so I understand. But that's not how it works here.
Have yourself a wonderful day.

Still having to use another team to talk your trash, CSS? Vandy and UK are closing fast? You are seriously delusional. They are 1 for their last 50 something against UT. The Vols have had two straight top 20 recruiting classes under Dooley. Vandy has never had one and probably not KY either so they're not closing - they're losing ground. Dooley has coached one year and the Vols closed strong, but, yes, it was parially against seriously inferior programs in Vandy and UK. You'll get your chance again this year in Knoxville.

And how bout the UT sweep of the 'dores in your only moderately competitive sport . . .

He CLAIMS he trained the Night Stalkers of the 160th SOAR (A). Truth is, he didn't even stay a week. In a unit where the motto is "Night Stalkers Don't Quit", he did!

Good luck with him!
