Corey Smith, four-star WR, picks Vols, but will start at junior college

Corey Smith

Corey Smith

Corey Smith, a four-star wide receiver by 247.com and Rivals.com from Akron, Ohio, announced his commitment to the University of Tennessee on Friday.

Smith, a 6-0, 175-pound member of the class of 2012, chose Tennessee over North Carolina, West Virgina and Illinois, as well as having a strong interest in Ohio State. He also had offers from Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Penn State before narrowing his choices.

However, Smith, who transferred midway through high school, has academic issues heading into what would be his senior season at Buchtel High School.

His coach there, Ricky Powers, told the Akron Beacon Journal that, while Smith was eligible to come back and play one more season there, the fact that he has been in high school four years, and the fact that he has Division I interest means that the school "won't allow him to come back here and play high school football" because they feel like he deserves his chance to play collegiate football.

Smith will attend East Mississippi Community College as he tries to become eligible for Tennessee. He joins Imani Cross, a 6-0, 215-pound running back from Gainesville, Ga., as Derek Dooley’s first two commitments for the class of 2012.

good news but seems odd. Dooley tends to stay away from kids that have academic risk this early in the recruiting process. im sure he has confidence in the kid. he wouldnt offer otherwise i suppose. Happy Friday the 13th everyone! GBO!!!

For those from Loma Linda California(insert Arnold's accent) optomostic is the turbo version of optimistic.

Nice ,but as earlier stated juco commits mean nothing til they graduate and redo their recruiting in many cases.

Deadhead and other Vols,

I would have to agree on this one. We have one who touts his pedigree and infinite knowledge, then true to form rattles off the negativity.

That was ure best shot ang a zinger. Ewe really think I don't know how to spell HIS name? Since this is a sport site I didn't think proper to use that way, thus the soundlike sir.

I am more than comfortable(to a point) where my faith is now as long as I keep humble like JESUS and continue to grow in HIS character. Just out of curiosity does the Dead_head come from being a fan/follower of the Jerry garcia group the grateful Dead? Just curious why the gloomy moniker ewe use.

Smokey is still on the prowl for more recruits.....

My opinion, for what it is worth, is that it is not the public school systems fault. There are plenty of students who were in poor performing schools, yet EARNED college degree's.
With some students at school "A" perform poorly and other students at school "A" go to college, I see it as an individual issue.
It is students fault for not placing a high regard on education & it is the parents fault for not helping the student.

Please use your grammar correctly.

Ewe is not the correct spelling for you.
Ure is not your or you're.

Kids today...need to stop texting and write a letter once in awhile.

Duke I may be wrong but I think he is going to a JC to finish high school and he would be able to sign next year with UT if he graduates from high school and can meet the testing requirements. As of right now he has a lot of work to do.

You have been on since 2007 and possibly have read many of my posts b4 that have such nonwords in them also. I put them there to see if readers are really paying attention. YOU were so YOU passed. I was not using textease as YOU apparently misconstrued eye was. I realize ewe is a mountain animal and ure isn't your. OK grammar lesson over for now class. YOU said write a letter now and then. Should it be B? Q? which letter should we write now and then? FYI in schools around our country many don't require writing skills since they have computers. Writing a letter becomes doing an actual letter that isn't cursive, but printing instead. I guess better than nothing huh?

Yeah, all those other schools that offered were a second tier group. Remember when you looked in the mirror, and knew, without a shadow of a doubt what a tool you are? I know its been difficult since that day, but no reason to try to bring everyone else down.

GO VOLS

Now that you have cleared the air, he'll find something else to cry about. I'm pumped about this. Recruiting Ohio is a great thing. With the recent growth in Georgia (mainly Atlanta), along with other areas gaining ground in the overall quality and # of blue chippers (S.C., La, Maryland, Alabama), it's almost as if Ohio has been put on the back burner when it comes to NATIONAL recruiting. But they breed tough hard nosed kids up there, MANY coming from extremely tough backgrounds. Ohio recruiting isn't as deep as Fla, Texas, Cali, or Georgia, but the best prospects coming from there are as good as it gets. But I can't help but wonder what would happen if you would take a kid from Dade or Broward Co. Florida and made him play a late Oct football game in East Cleveland with vicious winds and snow coming off of Lake Erie? I'd bet Ohio prospects would be respected a bit more if someone would do that. And the recent downfall of Pa recruiting makes it that much more difficult to get a good player out of Ohio. So don't kid yourselves, this is a FANTASTIC get by coach Dooley and staff.

On a serious note, I'm generally not crazy about taking dudes like this either. Being that this will be a small class and we will only take 20-22 players, I would say that Dooley isn't big on taking chances either. If it were a RB, LB, DT, or DE and he didn't have his grades in order we probably wouldn't fool with him. We need guys who can produce ASAP in those positions. But being that we are deep at WR, I think this was a risk worth taking. He's a heck of a player, plus it gets our foot in the door in Ohio.

I don't think Dooley would take him if he didn't think he could become eligible for this next years clas, as RichRollin pointed out. He's only going JUCO this one year, since he transferred, got behind, and ALREADY has 4 yrs high school, so he still could come for the class of 2012.
Dooley must be getting expectations up, if the negative nancys are now complaining about 4 star recruits. GBO!

Maybe a few, but them dudes grow up dreaming of playing for OSU. I've said before, Ohio St. and LSU might be the LUCKIEST SOB's in NCAA football. Both being the only major programs in their states, yet both are top 5-6 nationally in HS talent annually. Florida has better talent overall, but has 3 MAJOR football powerhouses, along with USF and UCF. Ga has 2 major programs within an hour of each other and UT and Auburn right across the border. Cali has Cal, UCLA, USC, Fresno St, San Diego St, Stanford, just plain ridiculous, LOL. Texas has Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, and June Jones is LITERALLY bringing SMU back. Even Alabama has Bama and Auburn. OSU and LSU can sit back like fat cats. Even though the entire nation tries to invade them, for the MOST part their instate kids are EXTREMELY hard to pull.

HOWEVER, getting kids like this is EXACTLY how we are gonna get in with some of the Ohio boys.
