Jason Yellin named UT assistant athletic director for media relations

The University of Tennessee athletic department added another member to its media relations team Monday, as Jason Yellin was announced as the assistant athletic director for media relations.

Yellin, who previously spent seven years at the University of Massachusetts and most recently held the position of associate athletic director for media relations, will have direct oversight of the media relations department and will also be a member of the football communications team, according to a UT release.

"Jason has considerable experience in media relations but also owns a diverse background in many areas related to communications and intercollegiate athletics," said Jimmy Stanton, UT associate athletic director for communications. "We are excited at the opportunity to add him to our talented communications team, and we believe his energy, personality and skill set make him an excellent addition."

Before he arrived at UMass in 2004, he spent six years at the University of Maryland in the athletic media relations office, working with a variety of sports, including football and men's basketball.

Yellin got his media relations career off the ground with two years at ESPN, where he was involved with ESPN.com internet production and served as the team pages editor.

Does this mean Bud Ford is retiring?

Maybe UT is grooming him to take over for the AD position, when Hamilton gets fired after the NCAA hammers Tennessee, for lack of institutional control.

Congrats Jason on being the 487th associate AD over there. Better start getting to know your new boss Coach Fulmer very soon or you will have a very short tenure.

I'm not sure "Yellin" is a good idea when it comes to media relations. (Ha! I crack myself up.)

You just can't have too many assistant A.D.'s.

I assume his first assignment will be to take a course in Southern mentality. Most Northerners just don't get it. Or California surfer boys either. How long will it be before we hear "That's not the way we did it in Massachusetts." I hope someone in the AD tells him we really don't care how they did it. If he can learn that valuable lesson, then we say "Welcome to Big Orange Country."

I would like to think there are plenty of smart Southerners too. I've worked with media members that have come to the South from other parts of the country and some of them are too smart for their own good.

The SEC is the Big Leagues and Haywood Harris and Bud Ford set a standard for Sports Information that schools like UMass can only dream of having.
