You would think any place that can pack in over 100,000 people in the stands for a college football game rain or shine would be football crazy.
The state's population is crazy about college football, but maybe not as crazy as you might think.
Based on searches on Google, residents in at least four neighboring states are crazier about the college game than Tennesseans. And Tennessee has been slipping in this "crazy index" over time.
I looked at the relative popularity by state of the term "college football" on Google Insights, a fun tool if your employer has a few hours for you to squander.
The search data goes back to 2004. In the first five of those years, Tennessee -- the state, not the school -- ranks in the top 10 for the relative popularity of search term "college football." The state was the eighth most popular state for the term in 2005, the ninth in 2006 and tenth in 2004, 2007 and 2008.
In 2009, 2010 and 2011, it fell out of the top 10. Currently it appears to rank 11th.
