UT won't charge admission for Orange and White Game

The University of Tennessee announced Monday that there would be no admission charge for the Orange and White Game at Neyland Stadium on April 21.

UT said in a news release that it's part of a Fan Appreciation Day initiative from the athletic department.

Parking will also be free.

Last year the cost at watch the annual spring game was $5.

Kickoff is 2:30 p.m.

Fan Appreciation Day will feature an autograph signing with UT coach Derek Dooley, assistant coaches and players. The signing, held in recent years at Haslam Field, will be held on the field at Neyland Stadium from 12:15-1:15 p.m.

For those attending the autograph signing, Gate 7 will open at noon. Fans attending the game but not wishing to attend the fan say can enter the stadium beginning at 1 p.m., during which time the first 2,500 fans entering through Gate 10 will also receive a Tennessee football mini-poster.

“A significant part of what makes Tennessee such a special place is the outstanding support of our passionate and loyal fans,” said athletic director Dave Hart in a news release. “We wanted to express our appreciation to our fan base in a tangible and visible manner. One element of that effort is to offer free admission to the 2012 DISH Orange and White Game. We are excited about our football team and the upcoming 2012 season, and we are looking forward to our spring game in Neyland Stadium on April 21.”

In addition to the presentation of the football spring practice awards by Dooley to selected players, halftime will include a flag football game between two teams of Tennessee football lettermen, with the rosters to be determined.

yea...wow this actually surprising, I thought they would up it from $5 to $10 a ticket, but maybe they're realizing...."yea we got plenty of money"

Maybe because the Vols had such a bad year UT is trying to keep the fans happy.

Wonder if admission would be free if we were coming off a national championship? No. Admission is free because interest in the program is lower than usual.

I think this is pretty clearly a good will effort to try to appease the fan base and win some of the more fickle fans back after the lack of success over the last few years. I, for one, would have gone regardless, but am certainly happy to get to do so for FREE.

So--I can't believe I'm saying this--thank you to all of the incessant complainers and negative folks! You just saved me & my wife $10-$20!!

I didn't mind paying when I could see the first and second teams scrimmage. Now you can't pay me to watch this format where a couple of players pick their teams like kids on a playground. Last year's game was horrible.

Premptive strike against an empty stadium. If the late season OOC game couldnt get but 50-60k in real attendance, the O&W is doomed.

Fickle Fans..When you repalce people like Fulmer, Cutcliff and Chavis with the likes of Derrick Dooley and a bunch of nobodies how do you call fans fickle. First off no SEC school other than UT has ever fired a coach that won that school a National Championship. Dooley's resume couldnt hold a candle to Fulmers. No CEO in America would replace a top producer with a resume and results like Ut had with Fulmer for an employee that has never produced positive results at any job he held. UT deserves fans like you. Only two SEC schools missed the NCAA Tourney in Basketball, a Bowl in Football, and the World Series in baseball and thats UT and Ole Miss. Vandy, Florida and S Carolina are the only schools to attend all three. Wake up, these tickets are free for a reason. Karma has come home. Vandy is now the "University of Tennessee"

You know, I can't help but agree here. I hear our fans talk about this and talk about that then 30K show up every year! It blows my mind that more folks don't come out to the spring game and support these guys. No excuse at all.

On the other hand, Dooley needs to line up the 1s and 2s this year and let them go at it. His O/W format has been an epic failure IMO. Just mix all the guys together and run them out there. 3rd string lineman playing beside a 1st stringer. 3rd string WR playing with a starting QB, etc. at bare minimum play your ones on offense against your twos on defense and the other way around. JMO, but I've seen the "vintage way" and I've seen Dooley's way. Dooley's way sucks.

So why didn't you guys hire Fulmer? I'm guessing he wouldn't have your sorry arses. Just my guess.

Oh yeah, I forgot....Fulmer wanted to go to a place where he could win championships. That knocked Vandy from the list.

Well, that's a start. Now if they would make the Georgia State, Troy, and Akron games free admission or maybe $5 each instead of charging $45 per ticket, that would be reasonable.

I'm skipping Georgia State vs Tennessee to go see Washington & Lee vs Sewanee.

I remember when this game would draw 70,000 fans..I guess with a low turnout of 30,000 last year UT didn't have the heart to charge the real fans for a glorified practice game..The funny thing is, I don't think $5.00 tickets were an issue anyway..If I'm driving 300 miles for a practice game. I don't believe I'm going to refuse to enter Neyland if they don't drop the ticket prices..I certainly hope this increases the attendance..GBO!!

have you not watched our Defense attempt to make tackles over the last 2 yrs? Adams would juke the jock-strap off the middle LB....stiff arm the outside LB......put a spin move on the crashing corner......lower his head and steam-roll the FS.....then outrun our web-toed SS on route to an 80 yd TD. After the game, Dooley would make reference to running through bamboo in Laos, simulate coitus with a potted plant, then offer Adams a scholarship.

Come on - don't make it sound worse than it is. Since '61 we've only broken a 30K attendance 3 times. In '86 there was big push to set a record and we had 73K but otherwise two other years had 50K and 31K - with the rest under 30.
