Dean Lockwood says he hasn't been contacted about Michigan opening

Dean Lockwood has been a popular guy lately.

The Tennessee women's basketball assistant coach was mentioned in a story on swishappeal.com on Thursday afternoon, listing possible candidates for the head coaching opening at Michigan. Since then, he's heard from colleagues and friends. He even received a text message Friday morning from Tyler Summitt, the son of Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt.

Lockwood said that he hasn't been contacted regarding the job, nor has he applied. He has been amused and slightly bewildered by both the report and the response.

"I'm a little curious about it to be honest,'' he said.

Lockwood, who just finished his eighth season on the Lady Vols' staff, is from Bay City, Mich. He coached on the men's side at three schools in his home state: Central Michigan, Northwood University and Saginaw Valley State.

The Internet report concerning Lockwood came just three days after UT announced that assistant coach Mickie DeMoss was leaving to join the coaching staff of the WNBA's Indiana Fever. It also occurred as Summitt ponders her coaching future after a season of dealing with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.

The Lady Vols began offseason workouts this week. Lockwood said that five of the six returning players were on the court. Guard Taber Spani, who never completely recovered from a knee injury suffered in the third game of the season, will be rehabbing during the spring.

Recruiting also is ongoing. UT is in the hunt for two junior college prospects: Wilka Montout, a 6-foot-5 center from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, and Uju Ugoka, a 6-foot forward from Gulf Coast (Fla.) State College.

Montout visited Arkansas and Kansas State last fall. South Carolina also is pursuing her. Curriculum considerations are believed to be as important to Montout as basketball.

Florida State along with perhaps two or three SEC schools are recruiting Ugoka, who was a finalist for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Community/Junior College national player of the year award.

The spring signing period begins Wednesday.

Could it be one of people with suit against UT over equal pay?

He is a logical candidate for most if not all open coaching positions. Nothing more, nothing less. Move on people, nothing here to see.

Maybe the "Go Tide Beat the Vols" comment did not sound so bad to Hart.

She should be fired for her work alone, if a LV player gets hurt it seems like they never recover - Kelly Cain, Brewer, Spani, Baugh finally did but it took her 3 years

...and your medical credentials include....?

I am so sick of hearing about Cain and Brewer. Cain's body couldn't carry the load. Brewer's mind couldn't carry hers. Spani is clearly injured and has not fully recovered.

But the dumbest thing you wrote (besides believing it's someone's fault when a player doesn't heal) is including Vicki Baugh on your list. Three knee surgeries...two of them major reconstruction. For her to be here at all in nothing short of amazing.

Please tell me you were joking.

There must be a reason (the under-valued) Fleser did not consider to identify the curriculum considerations in quest. Just privacy, or told on background?

I hope we don't lose Dean Lockwood. The man has such passion for his work. I've seen a couple practices and the passion and energy he brings to the court in practice is unmatched.
Look at the work he did with Glory Johnson from her freshman year to her senior year. She improved so much in those 4 years.
Thank you Dean for all the work you do for Pat and the team.

Has anyone read from ESPN.com, the allegations of nearly 800 recruiting violations in the form of improper phone and text contacts with recruits over the past four years. Mulkey has been banned from off campus recruiting for the entire Summer. Baylor Women's hoops has already lost 2 scholarships. Also Mulkey had improper contact with Griner's Father at AAU games prior to Griner's commitment to Baylor. Auriemma's indescretions should be unmasked and punished also. Makes you appreciate the above board way business is conducted at the University of Tennesse

Yes - God forbid a woman getting paid the same as a man for the same work. Why are you on a woman's basketball site?
JM is known as one of the best trainers out there.

Ask Kamiko Williams and Candace Parker if she got them up a running ahead of schedule.
Again I say - if you don't think women deserve equal treatment why are you on this thread?

It's already been talked to death on this site that she does nowhere near the same amount of work as her male counterpart. You obviously condone her anti-UT actions, so I'll ask you, why are you posting on a Tennessee Vols website?

Candace Parker played with lots of pain. I credit those ladies themselves more than the trainer. Go back & watch the NCAA tournament game in in 2008. Candace showed her determination and inner strength playing with obvious pain. I feel anyone showing any anti-Vols spirit, regardless of their ability should not work for the Vols. If they are great at their job, they should be able to find a position they like better at a different school.

I think I've earned the right to post here - how about you?
Weak, weak response from you. Do you really think the trainers for the women's BB do less work than the trainers for the men's BB. Probably more for the women given the chronic knee issues.
Try to do better next time.
