Amy Smotherman Burgess/News sentinel Tennessee tight end Mychal Rivera makes a catch before the first scrimmage of the spring at Neyland Stadium last Friday.

KNOXVILLE — Mychal Rivera is finding himself in all kinds of new places on the football field this spring.

Sometimes he's split out wide as a receiver.

Other times he's in a three-point stance next to a tackle or a step behind another tight end.

He's even lined up in the backfield at times.

Calling the Tennessee senior a tight end might be misleading.

if anything needed adjusting, it was the tight ends. They need to make several reads...before and after the snap. I like the talent that we have at tight end. And now, we finally have guys with enough toughness to actually play the position. A sissy TE just doesn't add up to success. WAY TO GO CHANEY...you have the smarts, and now finally I think you have the players and player effort needed to have a high performance Big Orange Express. I can't wait, I am ready to kick some B_tt!

Yep, our TEs ought to have a good year. They can make key catches and help open big holes for the newly vamped RBs to hit with authority. 1, 2, 3, awaiting the trollalongs to show up. I hope they don't.

Never happen. He's way too positive to work under Adams.

From day 1 CDD said he was going to run a Pro set O and that he was going to get good TE's so we could run a 2 TE set whenever we wanted to.

He's consistently been trying to recruit really good TE's and now we finally have some and a little depth that's young but looks extremely promising for the next few years.

Learning the TE position is the 2nd hardest position to learn behind the QB but we now have guys that are getting alot more comfortable and know what to do so that gives us many more options and plays to run.

Moving TE's around alot keeps the D confused and off balance and will give Bray more options on most every play.

Last season most of our O was based on a dangerous passing game but when Hunter went down that changed everything and we never fully recovered from losing 1 of our best weapons and then Bray went down too and hurt us even more.

This season we'll still have a very dangerous passing attack but with the TE's able to do more and a solid rotation we'll have alot more plays to choose from and options to hit the D with.

This is going to be a fun season to watch and our O has the potential to be 1 of the most dangerous in the SEC and maybe in the country.

VFL...GBO!!!

Rivera is very soft. He has trouble hanging on to passes in traffic. He does not like to get hit. Maybe McCartney can toughen him up for this year, and many others too. The good news is that Jacques Smith has predicted us to win the SEC this year.

I hope we see them Move people out of the way on runs and Move the chains with catches and even a few Move the numbers on the scoreboard with trips in the end zone. We shall see.

I can see our offense being one of best in country but I can see our D being one of worst in country.
