Derek Dooley had barely finished his comments to the media after the Orange & White Game on Saturday when he glanced at a flat screen on the wall of the interview area.

There, stats from the scrimmage were displayed. But rather than identify the participating teams as Orange and White, the board showed this final score:

TENN 14 NCSU 17

Those unscrambling the alphabet soup were left to conclude that NCSU might stand for North Carolina State University, which just happens to be Tennessee’s first opponent in the upcoming season.

A couple of first half observations:

First team defense slightly better than first team offense.
Second team offense clearly better than second team defense.

Late 2qtr TD run by Lane would have been down three-five yards short of TD if Wagner wasn't wearing red jersey. Wagner pulled up to avoid contact. Time would have been gone. No score.

There were a lot of times plays went well past where Waggner would have ended them.

Read the article guys. It didn't say Tenn and NCSU on the scoreboard. It said Orange and White on the scoreboard. They're talking about a monitor in the interview room that showed the stats from the game.

I haven't actually read the whole article from the link, just the part that shows on the first page. My guess is that the computer that shows the stats on that monitor has already had the 2012 schedule loaded into it, and whoever loaded it forgot to load the Orange and White game into it, so it just showed the first game's participants.

Good post. I was saying yesterday that Lane had a good day, but he wouldn't have went bonkers against the #1 defense. And I don't even think the TD at halftime would have made it past 10-15 yds against the 1st team D. And he had 3-4 huge plays on that toss sweep left against the 2defense. We did the toss sweep against the 1 defense and AJ Johnson was there to knock someone's head off. The LB play was the biggest difference I saw. If our starting LBs get hurt we are gonna be hurting. The 2nd team LBs IMO were the reason Lane had a field day. They couldn't fill a gap to save their lives. And they're slow.

Agree. I thought our 1st team D looked good without Prentiss and Maggit. Add them two and the D can be REALLY REALLY good. And a good D will keep you in games in this league, which will bring the kicking game into play. That's where I start getting nervous.

OK, here's the challenge: If UT wins 8 or more games this year, you all promise to stay off GoVolsXtra for 1 year. If they win 7 or less, then I promise to stay off for a year. Of course, this assumes that we're all men of integrity (i.e., won't change our screen names). I'm confident in my claims; how about you?

Of course we know this guy is messed up, insecure, jealous etc. But, for a stranger to come upon this site, observe it for a few days, he would quickly wonder what was wrong with a person who is consumed by another........and is hung up on references to bamboo so much. That's kinda' weird, wouldn't you say?

The band of trolls here is actually running out of silly things to say.........actually a desperate move no doubt. Bamboo.........very silly.

Not sure I'd go that far. Lane is gonna be a real good back for Tennessee. All I'm saying is that we can't look at what Lane did against far inferior talent when evaluating our run game. I look at what Neal and Young did against the 1st string D, and they both averaged 4.9ypc. And I'm confident that Lane would have had similar ypc average if he went against the 1s (4-5ypc), which is still pretty darn good.

I'm usually up for a challenge, but not this one. Dooley's schedule is so weak, even he will do better this year. Put enough Mary School of the Blinds on your schedule and you can produce a pretty good record. Do you ever remember a weaker non-conference schedule in Tennessee football history?

Speaking of NC State & taking them lightly like some fans (?) on here, maybe they should check the Vols record against the ACC (not counting Duke) over the past 15 or 20 years. The game that comes to my mind is the bowl game that Maryland laid 55 points on the Vols. Don't take anyone for granted!

In other words the rationalization has already begun..UT had a weak non-conference schedule last year except for Cincy and they were replaced with NCSU in the opener..Say what you will, but you know deep down UT will be much improved this year..

How many non-con games did we lose last year? So, if we improve our SEC RECORD, what will the whine be then? It wasn't as hard of an SEC schedule? It must be because we hired Hart? Our non-con schedule is far from the easiest in the SEC, so what's your point? We expect to see improvement on our SEC SCHEDULE. That's what generally happens when you have been REBUILDING for a couple of years. You get BETTER.

Oops, forgot, we can't use the "rebuilding excuse". We have actually had a better roster than bama, LSU and florida the last two years. It must be coaching, what the he!! was I thinking. UT hasn't been rebuilding. Dooley walked into a goldmine of talent and depth... blah, blah, blah...

Rich_Is_Re-born writes:

Well, one good thing is that we didn't suffer injuries. That's actually HUGE! On the other hand, there was a pretty balanced attack on offense between runs and passes.

BASED ON DOOLEY REBUILDING THE ROSTER.

Based on SEC talent and depth for the first time in FOUR YEARS.

Based on our freshmen and sophomores, our WHOLE team for the last two years, getting playing time.

Do you know ANYTHING about this game? PLEASE explain to me how Dooley walked into a team tha was anywhere NEAR as talented and dep as it is now. I look forward to hearing this...

Anybody that knows jack about FB knows this year marks a junior heavy class full of players with experience..If you don't think that having seasoned upperclassmen doesn't make a difference then you are an idiot..Bray enters his Jr year and the return of Hunter (his favorite target) Rogers is back as a solid option..The line has been together for 3yrs and Cam Clear will see some action at TE which UT is loaded at this year..Add in experience at the D-line, returning studs at LB and much improved DB play = more wins and in my opinion a NYD bowl bid..GBO!!

Good point, RR..That Spring we lost Tony Williams he was our hardest running back and he was never the same..A big sigh of relief getting out of Spring drills with no major injuries..I did want to watch Peterman run the offense and his thumb injury derailed his debut..We'll have to wait for Summer to see him take some snaps now..GBO!!

I don't mind taking what I dish out, being a responsible player. My claim is this... Dooley has already shown who and what he is based on his coaching record, recruiting, in-game decisions, etc.: a lower tier SEC coach and a mediocre national coach at best. My Vols have a weaker schedule this year so one would think more wins. I'm more concerned with improvement and being able to hang with the big boys, getting a signature win, and beating the mid-pack teams. Here's what I'll agree to: if KNS posts a poll asking something to the effect of "Do you think this program is heading in the right direction," "...improving," etc. and the majority vote "No," that's more indicative. I'll lay off a year if not.

So now a schedule that is made 6 years ago is Dooley's fault? You, sir, are blinded by your hatred for UT. Your ignorance is sad.

ShaversChoicewasbanned writes:

I realize that the trolls are going to say phooey just to make themselves feel good as they keep one hand in their pocket and type one-handed, giggling like a schoolgirl - but for the true Vol fans out there, I hope you noticed the paragraph:
Dooley entered his first season as Vols coach in 2010 with an offensive line that had a combined total of three collegiate starts. UT will open the 2012 season with an offensive line that has 99 career starts.

It wasn't just the OL that was that thin. We have not had a full roster in three years. This is the first year to have 85 scholarship players and some of them are probably not SEC caliber and not recruited by CDD.

I bleed orange and will give this staff a chance. I like the players he is recruiting and believe that his OCD, lawyer-like attention to details will pay dividends.

More talent than Kiffin...you can't be serious. Kiffin had 6 players drafted off of his team - including 2 in the first round and 1 in the second.
Last year, UT had 2 players drafted (4th & 5th rounds) and will have, at the most, 2 players drafted this year. If no one leaves early, UT might not have anyone drafted next year.
More talent?!?!?!
