Holly Warlick's UT challenge: meeting Summitt's standard

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Holly Warlick has her work cut out for her as Tennessee's new women's basketball coach.

She is replacing Pat Summitt, which has been compared to following Dean Smith at North Carolina, John Wooden at UCLA or Bear Bryant at Alabama.

Warlick, however, says she's simply taking over a program she's very familiar with for her close friend.

And just like Summitt, Warlick welcomes a challenge.

"This is what I do," said Warlick, Tennessee's first new head coach since Summitt took over in 1974. "I'm a basketball coach, and I've been it all my life. I've learned from the best, so I don't see it as I'm following a legend. I'm following a mentor who's prepared me for this opportunity and it happens to be at the University of Tennessee.

"Very honored, privileged, and I'm ready to go to work."

Warlick has her hands

full. Not only did Summitt set a seemingly unreachable standard with 1,098 wins and eight national titles in her 38 seasons, five seniors are gone from last year's team. So Warlick's success will depend on convincing great players to keep coming to Tennessee.

The Lady Vols have been waiting since the spring signing period opened April 10 on junior college prospects Uju Ugoka and Wilka Montout, while high school junior Kaela Davis of Buford, Ga., announced in February she was looking at other college after being committed to playing at Tennessee for several years.

Warlick said the uncertainty over Summitt's future was a little bit of a concern. But she and assistant Dean Lockwood immediately got on the phones after Wednesday's announcement, and she said the feedback they've received has been good.

Summitt sticking around as head coach emeritus helps as well.

"It's been really a positive response for us on the recruiting side," said Warlick, who also has to quickly hire two new assistants.

Lost in the season-long saga over what Summitt would do following her announcement Aug. 23 of her diagnosis with early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type, was Warlick's role with the team. She took the lead during games, holding the clipboard in the huddles, and talked with reporters afterward.

The Lady Vols went 27-9 and won a 16th Southeastern Conference tournament title.

A Knoxville native, Warlick was one of Summitt's earliest recruits and became a three-time All-American between 1976 and 1980 when Tennessee went 118-23. She was the first Tennessee athlete to have her jersey retired at the end of her career.

Warlick went into coaching and started as an assistant at Virginia Tech between 1981 and 1983 before moving to Nebraska for two seasons. She returned home and joined Summitt on the bench where she spent the past 27 years.

Warlick was on hand for all eight national titles along with 949 of Summitt's 1,098 victories and is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.

Warlick also received a vote of confidence from some of the marquee coaches in the women's game.

"I am thrilled for Holly as this opportunity is well deserved and Pat will be a huge asset to her moving forward," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said.

Notre Dame coach Muffett McGraw expects no change out of Tennessee with Warlick in charge.

"We know that the Lady Vol program will remain strong and vibrant with Holly Warlick as head coach," McGraw said.

Summit presented Warlick with her whistle during Thursday's news conference. About the only thing missing from practices will be Summitt's icy glare, something Warlick says she doesn't have. But a couple of Lady Vols see little difference between the two on the court.

"She yells just like Pat does," departing senior Glory Johnson said. "She yells just as loud as Pat does. She's a lot more goofy off the floor. But on the floor, they have the same mentality.

"They're about winning and being successful and doing whatever it takes to get the job done."

Freshman Cierra Burdick came to Tennessee expecting to play for Summitt. But the small forward from Charlotte, N.C., has confidence Warlick will make the Lady Vols better in her own way.

"Her jersey is hanging in the rafters," Burdick said. "I think no other person but Holly is best prepared for this position. She clearly has huge shoes to fill. Those shoes may never be filled, but I think Holly out of anyone in the country I have full confidence she can get this job done, and she will get this job done."

Warlick won't be making the $1.5 million Summitt earned, but she got a hefty pay hike to $485,000 in a deal signed through 2016. It's a vast improvement over the $250 a month Summitt was offered to coach the Lady Vols in 1974.

But Warlick's biggest advantage may wind up being the recruiting heft that only Summitt can provide in her new role as head coach emeritus.

"She's going to watch practice and be involved in on-campus recruiting, which is huge for us," Warlick said. "She built this program, is the tradition of the Lady Vols, and we're going to use her in every way possible to help us continue that tradition."

I wish the Lady Vols well in POST PAT, but I do not think UT did itself any good giving the whistle to Warlick. UT could get any coach in the country. A lot of talent this year and Warlick just could not motivate and utilize the talent she had.

Holly certainly deserves the opportunity. While it is difficult to even think of our Lady Vols without Pat Summitt as Head Coach, Holly has been dedicated to UT, and she is as prepared as anyone could be. She will do great. I would like to see Tyler Summitt on the bench with her. He will be a great coach also because of the knowledge he has received from Pat, just as Holly has.
Go Lady Vols!

There certainly have been a lot of posters who have raised that point, but if you recall, Pat didn't seem to consistently motivate that crop of seniors that well, either. Every team is different in terms of individual psychological and emotional quirks. Maybe the combination of Holly and the crop players on hand now will blend better.

Under the circumstances, there is no guarantee that anyone could or should have come in with a new broom and attempted to sweep away everything Pat built, as many ambitious would-be successors might well try to do, while succeeding at the level everyone has come to expect. Certainly Pat's position with the program would be seen by many newcomers as a formidable presence looming over their shoulders. Hiring Holly is the best way to keep Pat involved in the program she still owns. Short of cutting her loose entirely, which would clearly raise a separate host of issues, hiring Holly is the best way to keep the continuity in the program.

Before you get so bloomin' negative, stop and think.....this past season was really "head coach by committee" and considering how many people were on that committee it's a wonder they got anything done, let alone finished as well as they did. Next season Holly will be the one making the decisions and doing the lion's share of the coaching, then we'll see how things work out. Give the lady a chance, will ya? If you're going to be a Negative Nellie, stay home and don't watch.

Now that the dust has settled at the UT athletic department, I can see the reasoning for doing as they did. Makes perfect sense to me to execute as smooth a transition as possible. It was sensible & verging on brilliant.

We just think we know so much, but we don't. Do we really think someone from the outside could come into our business and make a bunch of changes without muddying the waters? 'Specially a bunch of know-it-alls like us who have never been an athletic director in a top-ranked D1 program like UT. Have we? I sure haven't. Biggest decision I make regarding what goes on at Thompson Boling is whether to order a footlong hotdog, or splurge on pepperoni pizza.

It's almost laughable to think we could offer a tiny bit of useful advice to even the most p-on of p-ons in the program...We are good at what we do, submitting entertaining comments to gvx. Let's just let it be our thing & let them do theirs, with our blessing.

Go Holly - go Lady Vols!

This reminds me of Fulmer taking the reins after Majors..Holly is much less intense than Summitt as was Fulmer compared to Majors..The big difference is Summitt has endorsed her replacement and will assist her anyway she can..I personally would like to see a Carolyn Peck or Nikki take over, but Holly has earned this opportunity and I hope she gets it done..GBO!

Good post. The negative posters are are true to the phrase "remain quiet and thought an idiot instead of speaking out and removing all doubt".

I tend to agree but I'm willing to see how the team responds without them feeling awkward with Pat court side..It had to be difficult for everyone last year and yet they still played well for most of the season..

Yes it is what it is....a hilarious headline. The standard is the bellweather/watermark level that will always be sought after.....but....just following a legend...no big deal. As stated many times by many people,if recruiting quality, top level players is maintained then opportunity will be there. Also seeing who fills out remaining staff positions with respect to recruiting and their resume.

There will be a drop off, no question. I mean, how could there not be when you lose the winningest coach in history and the woman who put women's basketball on the map. Holly is in a no win position unless she wins a national championship within the first three seasons. Even then, she will have to continue on that level for another 35 years beyond that (what would she be then, 80?) and win another 7 NCAA champships. No, there will be a dropoff. Hopefully, it will not be too sharp or too prolonged.

Sure you are, until she turns in a losing season. Then, it'll be, "I told you she was not up to the job." Wait and see.

Shoot, I'm just eager to see who the assistants will be. I guess in the meantime we can slam Coach Holly back and forth like a tennis ball. We have to have something to gossip about on the web site. It's going to be a long hot summer before practice begins and the fall recruiting season will give us new material to slam back and forth.

When is the end of spring signing period?

Have to agree UT did the most rational thing to keep the continuity of the program and keep Pat involved ..the ultimate test will be the attendance and dedicated followers who attend many out of town games..I am one who thinks Holly was not the best choice for head coach but can't reasonably say it wasn't the best choice for the overall situation..for me..keeping Pat involved was more important than who the head coach would be..

Lady Vols fans are a dedicated bunch..there may be a bit of a dropoff in wins but Pat's continued presence will certainly assist with maintaining attendance...

Can we PLEASE stop with all the nonsense about Tyler Summitt? The guy has this much coaching experience --ZERO. Coaching is about a lot more than your name. I don't have much confidence in Warlick, but wish her well. She's very dedicated to UT, of course--but like PS she's been around a LONG time and the program really needs some new blood. She seems too nice. The Vols need someone smart, youngish, dynamic and demanding. They also need a good offensive coach--this team's half-court offense has been a problem forever.

nothing negative to say about Holly, how can anyone.
But at same time, not so sure that she has the wow factor, or excitement to keep recruits excited...

Who knows if she even wanted job, etc, but personally just think someone like Nikki would have brought more excitement to recruits, just my opinion.

I hope it works out with Holly, and whoever else they bring in as assistant.
