Hey Vol fans...great news! Latest news round' the ole' ball field is that the reason has not made an announcement as to our new coach as of yet is because UT Officials are trying to nail down and finalize a deal with Bobby Petrino. I've been long saying that if we couldn't get Gruden (never really thought we'd have a chance) we needed to land Bobby Petrino. Yes, I realize that him rididng a motocycle with a chick on the back other than his wife or daughter were wrong but come on....I'm all for 2nd chances and hopefully he's learned his lesson. Not to mention, how cool would it be to pull up to an IHOP or other restraunt around town and see Petrino sitting on a cycle. Go Vols......let's get this done and bring on Coach B.P.! How funny, I just thought of his initials after typing them in this comment and they are the same as Bruce Pearl. Let's just really hope he's learned his moral lessons!!!! Go Vols!!!

I just now listed to a report on a station that said the decision from Bobby Petrino should be finalized today as Coach Strong preferes to stay in Louisville. I would like to have had Coach Strong but who can blame the guy when Louisville is willing to pay that amount of money being reported. Oh well, it may have taken longer than I liked for Hart to have made a selection but hey....looks like Santa has finally made his rounds to Knoxville and I for one, love my present! No returns this year!!! Go Vols and Go Petrino!!!! Bring us back from the ashes!

second chances?? Petrino has left a brown paper poo bag on the porch of every job he has ever had. Sure he has won football games, but the man has no loyalty, no class, and no morals. I love UT, but, as a parent, I wouldnt want that scumbag in my living room recruiting my son. We had enough of a scumbag coaching staff with Kiffin and Co. I hope UT has more sense than to bring in Petrino.

Article from Dixiefriedsports.com from last week. I'm not sure how I missed this article but it helps to solidify the reason for Hart taking his time. I wans't sure at first what to make of Dave Hart taking so long to come up with a new hire but this morning, I'm now convinced.....Dave Hart and Bobby are gonna lead us to the promise land! Go Coach B.P.

Tennessee- Attendance is way down, the Vols have a QB who can't stay out of trouble(even if it's minor), and Dooley isn't winning enough. The once proud UT program is now below South Carolina in the SEC East, something many thought would never happen. Unless things turn around, the Vols are likely looking for a new coach for 2013. Petrino would make an immediate impact in Knoxville and I believe would have Tennessee competing for a National Championship by year 3. UT is a much bigger name than any other school and has more resources than anyone else on this list, which means they could land a big name coach without having to go after someone with some baggage.

If we can't get Gruden, and we're not willing to take a chance on Petrino, Charlie Strong is the best candidate out there. But, there are others. It's clear that Strong is the best thing that's ever happened to Louisville, and they're not going to give him up without a fight.

TheRealDragonSlayer writes:

Butch Davis may be a much better play than Petrino. Butch builds strong defensive teams, and that is what we need in the SEC..that is why Strong being in the mix was exciting for us. Petrino, even when he succeeded at Arkansas, was focused way too much on offense. If he does come here, I will absolutely support him, but I am wishing for Butch Davis.

mikec1000000, no disrespect to your post but don't you think EVERYONE is entitled to 2nd or 3rd changes in this game we call life. In your post you mention that you wouldn't like Petrino (you call him a scumbag) in your living room recruiting your son.....my question for you is what other schools have come to recruit your son in your living room? I wish him all the luck in the world but he's good enough to play at UT, someone else will pick him up. Go Vols and let's get Petrino in Knoxville NOW!!!!

WRONG! Strong turned UT down, it is now Gundy with a $3.5M buyout to OK State, on top of the $6M to Dooley... CBS Sports reporting this.

This is the last straw for me. This athletic department is not only the most inept bunch of morons of any NCAA program, it it the worst I've ever seen in my lifetime. We can't get anyone to coach this program? Seriously? And PETRINO? I'm sick and tired of being constantly embarrassed in the media by coach after coach that refuses to come here. This should be a top 10 destination job, and we can't even get a better coach than Auburn who is facing possible probation and has to compete directly with Alabama for in-state support. This is truly the lowest of the low periods for Tennessee football. I'd have just preferred they brough Fulmer back. Out.

ONLY reason this is occurring is because Dooley lost to Vandy and did not make a bowl, otherwise none of this occurs and we hire Gruden. With this said I hope what I am hearing is true and that Dooley's loss did not cost us Gruden.

Doubtful. You must have been a dooley supporter. However, the teams Kent St. beat = not impressive. Teams that strong has beat = not impressive. One ranked win in 3 years?! Sounds like dooley 2.0 to me, how disgraceful. I made my account so that I could post because I can not stand to see posts such as this. We deserve Stoops, Miles, Meyer, Saban, Richt, Spurrior or Jon Gruden we do NOT need to continue to settle. This is UT who is used to winning 9 and 10 games a year and being involved in the possibility of making an SEC championship game. ANYONE who is fine with going 7 and 5 and playing teams like maryland or nc state in bowl games are not true UT fans.

texasvolunteer1973 writes:

you guys are still thinking that the UT Job is a "premier" job. It used to be and still has the POTENTIAL, but any good coach in his right mind knows the uphill climb this job presents. UT has not been in the national scene for FIVE years! For a 16-17 year old kid - they have NO IDEA that UT was ever prominent. Add that to the uptick in programs like S. Carolina, Georgia, Vandy, etc., and the fact the state does not produce top talent, this is a tough job. Add to that a fan base that is tired of losing and has zero patience for a new guy, along with the fact the this "awesome" offense everyone talks about will be rebuilding next year when Brey, CP, and Hunter go to NFL. Oh yes, and our secondary is slow as smoke and can't cover my grandmother because it's filled with 3 star athletes who run 4.8 in the 40 - who would want that? It makes me laugh when some of you mention these coaches like Stoops, Fisher, Gundy, etc. who are at strong and healthy programs... WHY? Why would they leave and come here? UT was an attractive job when Fulmer got fired... but after the last 4 years of misery, average recruiting on defense over the last 2 years, this program is at the bottom of the SEC and its going to take a very special individual and the patience of the fan base to get it back to even competing (yet alone winning) in the SEC. I hate to tell you this, but Jarod Mayo is not running through the "T" next year. Darwin Walker is not running through the "T". Fred White is not running through the "T". Eric Berry is in Kansas City. Parys Harrelson is in rehab in San Francisco. These types of players don't exist at UT right now! We are a below average program with average talent and NO MONEY in the bank. So quit dogging Dave Hart. Put yourself in his shoes and try to sell that! Not easy - at all.

I agree completely and have posted several times previously that our biggest problem is a rodent infestation, moles, from BAMA & Florida, send Hart and Cheeck packing, bring back orange-blooded Fulmer as AD/HC, heck he is still on our payroll so it's a win-win. Contract should be heavy incentive laden to ensure results are achieved and forget the on-going soap opera playing in NYC.

UTfanfromSC writes:

I've been here from the beginning guys (not literally but since I was old enough to hold a football) and UT is not what it once was. I can't argue that we need a solid coach, but we also have to look at the reality of who will come to UT given the past 5 years. I personally hope we get someone who is a strong recruiter and can run a clean program. we don't need anyone with dirt under their nails. the NCAA has already been poking around at UT since Kiffen and Pearl made a mess. they're watching us! I personally would rather go 8-4 and get a good bowl then 12-0 and not be able to compete (i.e. Ohio State) for a National Championship. It's just my opinion and I hope that those making the decisions make a clear one and that those of us who sit in the stands allow them to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. GO VOLS!!!

In spite of what the experts here on the value of the Vols opening, we have to ask ourselves one thing...

A potential goat in Knoxville or a god in Louisville?

Louisville will accept 7 wins or better season after season when the same records in Knoxville will eventually get a coach fired. Strong has shown he can win at the Cards and they just offered him a sizable contract to keep him here, more than many other coaches could ever hope to get in such a venue.

It's not just about money, it's also about security and what the opprotunity is for success. We fired a NC coach in the 80's, probably for a good reason given the drinking rumors, health issues and on field success. Then we turned around and fired his successor who was one of the best W-L coaches of all time and another NC winner 12 months after being the SEC East champ and 1 play from being the SEC champ.

Now we're in shambles. The real question is who pulled for coach Sal. That was the real difference in this season, defense. It really doesn't matter, Dooley bore the brunt. But here we are.

A goat in Knoxville or a god in Louisville? That is what Strong is pondering right now.
