Throughout a wild, almost three-week process that started with the firing of Derek Dooley and ended with a Friday morning confirmation of the hiring of Butch Jones, there were two times I felt pretty confident that Tennessee had found a new head football coach.

Less than 40 hours ago, UT athletic director Dave Hart made an offer I didn’t think Louisville coach Charlie Strong would refuse. Strong had some concerns — legitimate concerns, in my mind — about the job, but he’d always wanted a “big-time” SEC coaching job and was about to get back some of the money he should have earned if he’d gotten any one of the SEC jobs he should have been offered the past 10 years.
