BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference won't suspend Alabama defensive end Quinton Dial for a hit on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray.
The league said in a statement Friday that it had reviewed video of that play and others in the SEC championship game and that the two schools would handle any punishments internally.
Dial leveled Murray during a second-quarter interception return. He was not penalized on the play.
The SEC statement says the conference is satisfied with actions taken by the schools. The Crimson Tide will play Notre Dame for the national title on Jan. 7 in Miami.
Coach Nick Saban typically doesn't disclose any internal punishments.
Dial has played in all but one game and has 21 tackles, including 4 1/2 behind the line of scrimmage.

If Tennessee hit someone like that they would give another year of probation to us.

He should not only be suspended, but UA should have been fined for that hit.

I saw the bad sportsmanship for what it is, but bad sportsmanship and helmet-to-helmet? I think he should be suspended by someone for the NC game.

It's interesting that by rule, you can't hit a defenseless player above the shoulders, and even though there was an official within ten feet of the incident there was no flag. The video is very clear - Murray was defenseless as he was trotting to the sideline, and he was hit in the head, helmet to helmet. Right after the hit the CBS team was very critical of the hit and several NFL reporters at the game tweeted that such a hit in the NFL would have drawn a $25 thousand fine. A typical response might be to say that perhaps opponets should play the same type of football against Alabama. There was one hit by a Georgia player in that same game against McCarron where the Georgia player was penalized. This past season Slive has punished two players for hits to the head - me thinks the comish may be partial.
