Vols' Jones 'comfortable' for recruits

Butch Jones

KNOXVILLE — Butch Jones stepped outside his spacious, two-room office with a picturesque view for a brief moment Friday and shared a brief conversation with two construction workers who were taking a break from putting the final touches on Tennessee's shiny new $45 million football training center.

"What do you think of the new building?" one worker asked.

"It's unbelievable," Jones replied with a smile.

Once he retreated back into his office, the workers hardly seemed in awe of the Volunteers' new football coach. One even remarked that he expected Jones to be taller.

Thanks for "letting" us read the Chat Times piece. It was a good read. On the same note, putting an interview with UT's new coach on the pay site is as insulting, and as belittling to VOL FANS as you can get. This is the KNOXVILLE PAPER'S VOLUNTEER website, it is a freaking slap in the face to make UT FANS pay to read an interview with THEIR new coach. PATHETIC!

actually, you're not thinking this through. How are reporters supposed to make money and support their families if they give away all their content for free? Then there wouldn't be any reporters!

There wouldn't be an internet site if they were not getting compensated..Good grief, what idiots would print a newspaper at all if there was no other way to get paid??

Very curious as to what level of recruit that coach will be able to recruit. Yes, we do need the 4 and 5 star recruits.

HtownVol writes:

So far Jones has lost two of Dooleys better 2 recruits (2 LBs that would have been nice) but that is expected with change.

What is not expected is that the only replacement he has so far is a 3 star athlete and news that UT is now in the lead for the #149 athlete in the country now.

We have seen on here too much about the "stars" and evaluating talent...
We are still in a mess because Dooley did not sign near enough of the top talent. Bama,LSU, UF and UGA are all signing 4 and 5 star recruits and UT is signing 90-95% 3 star recruits with about 3-4 of the occasional 4 star recruits.

This has to change and that is the bottom line.

UT will not get back to the BCS until we see at least 10 players in each class that are 4-5 star recruits.

This is all my opinion.

Aren't we a bit impatient here? This is a DEAD period in recruiting. I'd suggest laying off the power drinks, Nervous Nellie.

I agree four five stars a must,,, but coach jones just got here,,,give him time to sit down with his recruits......

With only a few weeks left in the recruiting season it would be a good year if they could get back in the top 20 by NSD..There are several big JUCO talents out there as well as some solid 4* athletes that are undecided.

Coach Jones is going to have some hard recruiting work ahead of him. I believe Coach Kiffen and Coach Dooley (Derek not Vince)burnt a lot of relationship bridges among many high school coaches, most in the Southeast. I will be personally shocked if Coach Jones can come out of this season with a top 20 recruiting class. This will not be his fault. His predecessor left him with 1 and 2 star commitments and 1 and 2 star backups in several key positions on the current team. It will be a major accomplishment if Butch Jones can come up with a 6-6 regular season record in 2013. However, the good news is that UT stands a much better chance of gaining commitments from Todd Kelly Jr and the Berry brothers then it would have under Coach Dooley (Derek not Vince). If Butch Jones is successful with those recruitments, I believe the up turn we are looking for will begin.

Please don't tell me wait till NSD..Bama, Fla and GA aren't holding their breath till NSD..They already have the best of the best sealed and delivered.. Backs like Hill and Watson I doubt would get a sniff from our competition but are the future at UT..We have a glaring need at RB that any Top 20 RB recruit can see but the barn is empty!!

Surely you're not this naive? Bama, UF, & UGA haven't revamped their coaching staff two years in a row. It's possible to sign recruits after NSD in case you didn't know..Also, you do realize that NSD is only 5 weeks away? It will be a miracle if UT makes the top 20 by then. On the bright side look at UT's average 3.33 stars per athlete, that easily ranks in the top ten nationally as well as the top 5 in the SEC. Reading the numbers can tell more about a class than rankings can, remember rankings are more opinion than fact.

While Vandy is doing well, the school is ahead partly because of sheer numbers contributing to its ranking, 22 vs 14 or whatever UT has that changes everyday, and last time I looked UT has more 4 stars than Vandy. What Vandy has is good enough to beat UT right now but still not good enough to be much more than mid tier SEC East talent and isn't enough to win big like Bama, UF, UGA or even USCe. Also note the numbers some other SEC schools have committed to them with some like UGA and Tx A&M having 30 or MORE.
Quoting Sophocles, one must wait until the evening to say how splendid the day has been, with NSD being the day Vol fans await with bated breath.
Patience, Vol fans.

No Iam not naive enough to believe we could land the top running back in any state in the southeast but with our stadium, top facilities, great fan base and the chance to play immediately,I don't think it's outrageous to think we should not be able to sign a top#25 RB..Dooley and Graham totally dropped the ball on this one!! NO other way to look at it!! Does any Vol fan believe Lane, Watson or Hill could ever become a player like Travis Stephens or Travis Henry who both played at the same time??

I think he's a Willie Martinez recruit from Auburn. After this dead zone is over I feel like Martinez will land some bigger name recruits than this..Thigpen has some good contacts as well, this could get interesting as NSD approaches..GBO!

Why are so many of our fans worried about this right now? CBJ came in and has done a good job so far I think. I wouldn't think that a kid that hasn't even talked to CBJ and or heard from any of the former Tennessee staff just jump onboard because of a coaching change. Some of you want 4*s and 5*s but remember these kids have seen what Tennessee has been thru the past few years and they have switched or truly rooted themselves in the fact that they are better off with the schools they have chosen or thats on their short list right now. CBJ is truly playing catch up in some areas. He's trying to hold on to the recruits that wanted to come to Tennessee. I say we give it a chance to pan out. Once he gets this first year over with he can truly go out and find those 4 and 5 stars that most of you want. On the other hand I would rather have a few coachable 3 stars with heart, speed and determination, willing to play for Tennessee, than some self absorbed kids that thinks their better than the program. I know talent helps, but it could also hurt a program. Just saying. GBO

I'm ready to support the next Vol coach. I ALWAYS said give Dooley three years, and if he couldn't handle it, replace him. Which by the way, is the INTELLIGENT way to handle ANY new coaching hire. I NEVER said "keep Dooley at all costs", just like I would NEVER propose to KNOW he couldn't cut it. YOU did not KNOW he couldn't cut it, you just HOPED he couldn't because he wasn't YOUR choice. That is the difference between YOU and me. I know my limitations when it comes to whether or not a coach will or will not make it, and am willing to at least give him a chance. YOU, on the other hand, cry and whine and batch if it doesn't go your way from the get-go, and only support what YOU feel to be the correct path. YOU are not that intelligent, YOU just think you are.

I will say that I have more faith in Jones, and think he's a better hire than Dooley. Regardless of who would have taken the position, he would have gotten a chance to succeed from me. I can't stand the know-it-alls, such as yourself, who have already "seen the future", so to speak. Because when you act like that, EVERYBODY knows you're full of it.

I am not by any means sold on CJ being the Vol salvation, but I do believe it is unrealistic to expect him to blow into town and recruit enough top level players to rank the class among the best in the country, those caliber players no longer have the Vols on their short list and have not for sometime. CJ talks a good game and many of his supporters refer to his success at Central Michigan and Cincy when praising his record, but I am concerned about his previous success being achieved with players recruited primarily by another head coach. If you conclude a coach needs three years to achieve success or failure then the jury is still out on Cincy, but during the three years following his Cent Michigan tenure you would have to be very disappointed. I do support CJ and wish him success, but with reservations that don't allow me to jump on the bandwagon with the great enthusiasm of some. I guess the skepticism comes with the great difficulty of finding a coach the previous 4-5 years and having to except the fact UT is no longer relevant when it comes to Championships. Only time will tell.

Hooray,
We just landed another three star recruit and our recruiting class is ranked somewhere between 42 and suck city. Bradley one of the very few four star recruits looks like he is gone.
Before we sing koom by ya lets try to remember that the last coaching regime at least held together and added to a top 15 class when the Kiffin left Dodge. We know that a top 15 class could not get it done. I hate to say that my glass is half full with the three star recruits that we have after watching a bunch of three star recruits running after 4's and 5's as they score touchdowns.
I am waiting for the new coaching staff to make a recruiting splash. We do not even have a hint of one now. If they had the confidence in recuriting at that level we would not see all of these offers to threes.
Happy New Year and it looks alot like the old year!!!!!
