Lady Vols commitment Kaela Davis reopens her recruitment

Summitt's health cited as concern

Forward Kaela Davis, who committed to Tennessee in 2010, is reopening her recruitment.

Davis' mother, Kendra, told ESPN HoopGurlz on Thursday that concern about UT's Pat Summitt and her coaching future along with the impact its having on recruiting was the reason why.

Summitt announced last August that she has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.

Kendra said that UT remained a possible choice for her daughter, a 6-foot-2 junior forward who is ranked No. 2 in the Class of 2013 by HoopGurlz.

In November, the Lady Vols signed all three seniors — Andraya Carter, Bashaara Graves and Jasmine Jones — who originally had committed to UT. Carter is Davis' teammate at Buford (Ga.) High.

Davis talked to Summitt after her announcement last August and reaffirmed her commitment at that point.

She went so far as to say that even if Summitt wasn't the coach that she would come to Tennessee and "play in her honor."

At that time, Kendra said that she told her daughter that she could play for Summitt regardless of what the future held.

"She can always play for Pat whether Pat's sitting next to her or not because of the foundation," Kendra said last August. "I do believe in the foundation of what the program is built on."

The reasons Kaela's mother gives for reopening recruitment were "concern about UT's Pat Summitt and her coaching future along with the impact its having on recruiting."

I don't get that last reason: the impact its having on recruiting? Is she saying she fears Kaela will not have commensurate teammates joining her at UT in future years?

Agreed. It should not be any of the current assistants. They had their chance this year to show their stuff, and it just isn't there. You can't coach by committee, you must have a big dog that bites!

This is a situation that no body wants to be in, who wants to replace a legend? Who wants to make the call when it's time for the legend to step down? It's
a very dreaded time in Lady Vols BB, but to see Pat on the bench last night was heartbreaking. She looked as if she had nothing to add, nothing to say, no motovational speach to make, no coaching expertese(?) to give. That is not the mental image I wish to be left with from the greatest coach ever! She deserves to ride off in the sunset the way she want to go, not how this terrible desease will dictate what happens. My mom is in the early stages of the same illness, seeing this first hand with my folks is hard to do. But I do love the Vols and Lady Vols, so what ever is decided is what I will support with unwaivering devotion to the University and to our coaches as well as our young student atheletes. As always, it's great to be a Tennessee Vol!

Can't blame the kid for backing out. Pat has earned the right to quit on her own terms but the right thing to do for the program is quit after this season. girls are prima donnas too. The smart play is to name the successor and put her under Pat on the bench right now. I agree with most of this. Pat's certainly earned the right to stay as long as she wants. But at some point I do think she'll realize her continued condition is hurting the program she worked so very hard to build and she'll need to step down.

Personally, I think this is her last season, but again she's the one to make that call. Hanging on beyond the time to go is always detrimental to the program.

In a huge irony, Dave Hart has had to deal with the exact same thing while at FSU with Bobby Bowden. the difference here of course is that the women's basketball isn't inexorably tied to the overall fortunes of the entire athletic department ($$).

Where I disagree is that Nikki Caldwell is the best replacement, at least right now. Whomever follows Pat will have an incredibly difficult standard to uphold, and it will be very, very difficult. Much more likely is that UT has a 'transitional' coach for a few years and then finds the right person (who still may ultimately end up being Caldwell, but she's not ready right now).

I dont disagree, and trust me no one love this group or coach more than I.
I have traveled from out of state to watch opening rounds in Knoxville, been to final fours.
But...
you are correct, it is a tough blow, and my concern is that it is a continued distraction for team too. Every game at every school turns into apep rally for Pat or the illness, not saying that is wrong, just a distraction.

I think the girls deserve better, tough pill to swallow but the team needs to decide on coach and get it done, they need to try and keep things moving as steadily as possible rather than having things nose dive and working to recover.
No one ever expected it to go this way, but it has.

once after the Candace Parker win her last year
in the game at Georgia. Pat was sitting with Mickey Deerfield after the game and post game show. She graciously spoke to the Vol fans and gave out autographs. Therefore, she is still MY coach.

If and when she should leave, remember she has had two assistants who became head coaches ( DeMoss and Matthew Mitchell ) and of course DeMoss came back to be on the staff. Having said that, Nikki is a good choice and so is Mitchell.

But, I am not advocating any changes, just speculating like the rest of us.

Hope Pat can somehow improve if possible and stay as long as she wants. Someone did post about the emphasis on defense and apparently that has left the offense lacking a lot.
