All-star Vonn Bell from Ridgeland High School is being offered a scholarship by the University of Tennessee.

— Vonn Bell’s list of football scholarship offers grew by one Thursday, and it was the one he had been waiting on for some time.

Less than 24 hours after being given an offer over the phone by Alabama coach Nick Saban, the Ridgeland High School junior safety took another call that included an offer early Thursday afternoon, this time from Tennessee coach Derek Dooley.

“It was very exciting to get to talk to Coach Dooley,” Bell said. “It was kind of a relief to know that they want me to play for them. It’s like what every kid growing up playing football dreams of, to get offers like that.

“Coach Dooley just said that they would love to see me in orange and really want me to come play for them. I kept telling myself while he was talking to just stay calm and wait and see what happens. I’ll take a tour of the campus with my parents and get to know the coaches now and see how we feel after that. I just want to make sure I’m comfortable with everything before I make any commitments to anybody.”

He would look wonderful in Orange, would get to play early, and would be an important cog in our move back to the top.

The Vols should be first and upfront with all the quality football players in Tennessee. We should never be calling after Saban has personally offered, and that is one reason Bama is so successful, they are out front and on top of the good players.

This is a bit off the wall but I'll write it anyway. I'm still a bit ticked off at Arkansas getting Otha Peters. I was shocked to see Arkansas only having 2 4* players in their recruiting class with Peters being one of them. Of all the coaches in the SEC, with the possible exception of Mullen and maybe Spurrier, Petrino seems to do the best job of coaching his players up, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. I really wonder if Saban could have gotten the same kind of production out of Petrino's kids. Petrino still has that reputation for jumping ship so that might have an effect on his recruiting but he sure gets the maximum out of the ones he lands.

Your comment would suggest that Dooley is only slightly slower than the guy everyone is touting as the latest God of college football since Saban offered Bell less than 24 hours before Dooley did, hater.

torchbearer writes:

I dont think Dooley was any busier than Saban. I find it troubling that we have to have recruits and their coaches frustrated before calling a guy. I know it is a busy job, bit it is a 10 minute call. A kid who is a fan who is elite talent should get the call in January. These kids are often sensitive to that and you have to play every advantage.

The kid is NOT in Tennessee, bumpkins. Reading and reading compehension should not be so difficult for a pulling guard.

Your Honor. Before rendering your judgement, I suggest you determine WHAT state the young man plays in.

You sound like a very successful recruiter yourself. Probably an insider. Do you think you would be willing to tell us who Dooley was calling while Saban was calling this kid?

Complain, complain, complain. When this kid's star rating comes out as a ***, then you'll complain that Coach Dooley is not going after more stars.

Do people who hide behind their computers and spout insults actually feel good about themselves? Seriously, dude? Where in the article does it say that Ridgeland High School is in Rossville, GA? If a person were not familiar with the Chattanooga area, they wouldn't know that the school is actually a few miles south of the TN state line.

I'm sick of people talking about PF letting Cobb 'get away.' We're talking ONE under rated recruit that went to Kentucky. How many times did Randall Cobb lead UK to victory over UT? Zero. Let it go.

Sounds like you're talking out of your anal orifice. These days, every coach knows of every good HS player, especially in-state. Doesn't mean they know everything about a kid, or that they're going to offer, but they know of them. Same deal with the Berry twins.

GREAT IDEA! Then, when we blanket the world with offers, everybody gets ANOTHER chance to rip on Dooley for telling all those early offerees that they ought to look elsewhere, when it gets closer to NSD.

I just can't imagine why anyone can support a guy who has taken the football program to the lowest of lows in UT football history. Just exactly what has Dooley done that makes you think he is a winner? After another embarassing season of taking the Vols to the bottom of the SEC do you really think he is going to turn this program around? He is just another temporary disappointment with a famous name who will be gone in a year.
I say the so called TROLLS are the only ones on this site with any sense of reality.

Hopefully after another embarassing season the idiots who hired him (and it wasn't Hammy) will realize you get what you pay for.

He isn't from Memphis, he's from Chattanooga. While we have a good deal of talent here, I feel like UT will have to put forth a HUGE effort to sell their "brand". I'm not saying there aren't UT fans here, I'm saying some of these kids see attention from OM and UM so early they seem to get jaded.
