Broken hand will keep Raven Chavanne out of opening series

The depth was certain to be tested at some point.

Tennessee might just be getting it out of the way early.

As the No. 9 Lady Vols prepare to start the season and their bid for a return to the Women's College World Series, a pair of injury concerns to critical components in the lineup could perhaps provide some valuable opportunities elsewhere.

A broken hand will keep junior third baseman/outfielder Raven Chavanne out of games starting Thursday at the Kajikawa Classic, a six-game showcase for some of the nation's best teams in Tempe, Ariz.

Chavanne started all 61 games last season and hit .455 to lead the SEC. She had 33 stolen bases in 36 attempts.

Outfielder Kat Dotson is still recovering from offseason knee surgery, but is expected to be available.

"We're going to be good this year, but two of the best players we have right now are injured," UT co-head coach Ralph Weekly said. "Both those kids hit over .400 (last season), so I'm kind of worried about that.

"But we've still got some really strong pitching, and we can still hit."

Vols,

Hope the team will soon be 100% healthy.

Basketball injuries..........now softball. Season hasn't even begun. Anyway, they should have a really good team...........as will the SEC, as usual.

F N S,

Raven is one of the better players. Not sure, but she may be an out fielder...........and is very fast.
