Despite a valiant comeback to win the doubles point for the eighth time in as many matches, the 17th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to a close Saturday, as No. 16 Southern California beat the Lady Vols, 4-1, in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship quarterfinals at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
The Lady Vols (5-3) took a 1-0 lead in doubles, getting victories from the teams of Natalie Pluskota/Caitlyn Williams and Brynn Boren/Sarah Toti. Pluskota and Williams won their match against Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria, 9-7, then Boren and Toti defeated Danielle Lao and Ali Ramos, 8-6.
USC, however, reeled off four victories in singles, with only Pluskota at No. 1 and Joanna Henderson at No. 6 winning matches.
Tennessee will play in the consolation bracket at 3:30 p.m. today against No. 12 Northwestern. The Wildcats lost to second-seeded and fourth-ranked UCLA, 4-0, in Saturday's quarterfinal after opening the tournament with a 4-2 win over No. 9 Virginia.
