Tim Daniels, former Loudon coach, Vol lineman, resigns as Red Bank coach

CHATTANOOGA — It was while Tim Daniels was working as an assistant coach for a postseason all-star game that the thought first crossed his mind.

Coaching the offensive line three years ago for a senior showcase, Daniels enjoyed working outside the spotlight that comes with being a head coach.

So after 18 years of leading a high school football program, the last 10 at Red Bank, Daniels resigned Thursday.

I was the sports editor at the News Herald in Loudon County when Tim was at Loudon. He is one of the best coaches I've had the opportunity to deal with in almost 20 years in the business in Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.

Most people forget that Tim was one of the prize recruits Johnny Majors brought in during his early years and that he had his career sidelined by cancer.

Best of luck to Tim Daniels for whatever he attempts in the future.

I remember taking my then 6 year old nephew to the Orange & White game when Tim was playing. He had his picture made with Tim (along with a few other players), with both of them kneeling on one knee. Tim was HUGE next to my nephew. When I told my nephew about Tim being diagnosed with stomach cancer, he was devastated, saying he was his "most favorite" Tennessee player. (Could possibly have something to do with the fact that my last name is Daniels).

I had lost track and didn't know what had happened to him, but am happy to know that he survived and has been successful. Here's hoping and praying that he continues to be successful in whatever path he chooses.
