Melissa Davin's 2 home runs power Lady Vols, 9-6

Sophomore left fielder Melissa Davin hit a pair of three-run home runs to rally the No. 9 Tennessee softball team past Western Michigan, 9-6 on Sunday in their final game of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

Davin's second homer, the game-winner, came in the bottom of the sixth inning with the game tied 6-6.

Tennessee (5-1) finished the season-opening event 5-1 overall, including a 3-0 victory over No. 1-ranked Arizona State on Saturday.

The Lady Vols played the entire weekend without injured All-Americans Raven Chavanne and Kat Dotson.

Ellen Renfroe (5-0) picked up the win for the Lady Vols, giving up five earned runs on six hits and striking out 12. Meredith Whitney gave up eight earned runs on nine hits, walked 11 batters and took the loss for Western Michigan (1-4).

Renfroe pitched 31 innings during the weekend, striking out 48 and posting a 1.13 ERA.

Lauren Gibson put Tennessee up 1-0 first a solo home run in the first inning. Davin stretched the lead to 4-0 with her third-inning home run before Western Michigan put together a five-run rally in the fourth inning highlighted by a three-run homer by Diane Patterson. Madison Shipman scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 5-5. Shipman then gave Tennessee a 6-5 lead when she knocked in Davin with a single.

Patterson hit her second homer of the game in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-6, setting up Davin's game-winner in the bottom of that inning.

UT Lady Vols rock!

We need more than one pitcher to get that run realistically speaking. If Tarango(SP) or Ivy can get her groove back we have a good shot as all this has taken place without services of Raven.....

Ellen has been outstanding. Hope Ivy gets back to her freshman year pitching. We are missing a couple of hitters now, but hope they get back in soon. Good wins.

Now finish off Western Michigan.

You go girls. That a way to kick some A.

Ellen pitched a great game! And the offense put up three without the assistance of All-Americans Raven and Kat, not too bad! Ivy will settle in as the season progresses, Cheyanne will burst on the scene as a pitcher and Ellen will continue her All-American status on our road back to the WCWS!!!
