It would be great to see him on the UT sideline in some fashion. In reality, I believe if he does not play, he will hit the booth for at least a season.
GO VOLS!!

Honestly he should do whatever the heck will make him happy assuming he's able. If he loves playing football, he should do it till noone will have him.

Colliervol writes:
For the life of me, I cannot figure how people think Peyton is ever going to coach at UT. If he were to ever coach, it probably would be at UT but realistically I cannot see anybody worth $300 to $500 million ever spending the 80 hours it takes per week to do that job. Why in the world would anybody do that if they had more money than they knew what to do with? Realistically, the TV booth or NFL team ownership would be more likely.
rich182x writes:
I think he should retire. If he retires at the peak of his career, it would be the same move as Barry Sanders made. Or he can go the other direction, and do the dance Brett Favre did. I would take the latter and come help your alma mater. Hell, do a season with Grueden in the booth and convince him to come with you to UT.
RoadTrip writes:
First - do whatever you want to do Peyton. You know the risk and the rewards better than anyone. If you play, let Kubiak know with the Texans and go play in a SB again, because they have everything they need but a QB like you.
If you go to the booth it should not be with ESPN. They hate us. They also worked against you and Eli for the Heisman.
If you want to coach, do it in the NFL for a few years. Then let UT know and come home when it becomes time. You will have the backing of 99% of the Vol nation.

Peyton loves Football, and I could see him coaching at UT. Kansas City wouldn't be bad, because then I'd have both him and Eric Berry to root for.

Peyton can do whatever he deems best. I just wish we had some idea what that is soon. It will never be a Favre type thing because he is a totally different personality from the Brettster. Whatever he does, I am for him and if he by chance comes back to UT some day, I'll be for him then. I am just tired of all the mediarama speculation. Best wishes to you PM.
Vols4life77 writes:
I agree with colliervol on this one. As competitive as manning is I don't see him coaching at the collegiate level. I see PM as a suit and tie executive with a pro team or a owner/part owner of an NFL franchise. With PM if there is any chance to play he WILL play. The guy doesn't know how to fail and this is another obstacle he would love to prove everybody wrong. I really can't believe all these VOL fans on here saying retire or I hope he retires so he can coach at tenn. That is a selfish way to look at this whole picture. As great as it would be to see him coach at any level I hope he heals properly and regains the strengh in his throwing arm so he can do what he was born to do. And that is to play QB. People say he is too old, that's ludicrous! He is 35 and barring health issues he has at least 3 to 4 good years left. If PM became a tenn coach he would almost automatically be the best recruiter in the country. Can you imagine how an 18 year old kid would be mesmerized if he was sitting on their couch selling the program. He has instant credibility. Even though I find it slim to none he ever coaches at tenn it would make a great story! I just hope he has a few more NFL years before we find out..
Vols4life77 writes:
As for my guess to where Peyton will play. I say Indy or Arizona. He would have to restructure his deal in Indy to stay but definitely a possibility. Arizona is a likely destination because kolb is not the answer and is owed 7 mill this year. They want Peyton and have the money especially after cutting kolb and Peyton would also play in the NFC west where you only have the 49ers.

Peyton would be a great HC at UT, but would be stupid to come here, and won't. UT eats its own and shows zero remorse about it. THIS, is why we have the grossly incompetent coach we have now.

No amount of money could make up for a serious injury. If he plays, the best OL will be the overriding consideration. Pick the best one needing a QB and Peyton will be there. Will he coach at UT? Not if he's smart. Too many people that call themselves fans here would start the "Fire Peyton Now" chant after the first loss to a perceived lesser team.
newportvol writes:
Peyton will never ever be a full time coach maybe a qb coach for some local hs team and run some qb camps in the summer.. Why on earth would he wanna be a full time coach.. ?? His next job will be in a booth or studio
And I dont think If dr clear P manning to return to the game Irsay has enought balls to cut him.. He knows he will go somewhere else inside the division and woop the colts 2x a yr... If he plays anywhere it will be for the colts..
Couchdummy writes:
Peyton is so accustomed to being the leader and calling the shots for a team that he will only continue playing if he can do it at the highest level. He will not follow the route of aging super athletes who hang on and perform at a less than championship level. From all indications, these recent injuries have severe potential to bring his durability into question. He is smart enough to know that playing professional football is probably no longer a wise option. He will not subject himself to the subordinate role that a head football coach must have to university administrators. He will most likely invest his time and money into some businesses where he has full control, such as football academy for training QB's in the off-season, his D-1 academies, supporting charity causes, and spending time with his family---or some combination thereof. He is smart enough and proud enough to maintain his marketability to promote products and enjoy a family-centered life. Just my opinion, since you asked.

He spent untold hours a week learning every facet of the game as a QB. He does it because he loves it. I can't look into his heart but I have to believe by his actions that it is not now nor ever have been about just the money. It's about being the best on the field, week end and week out.
I think he will make one more run at another ring. I hope his finds a team with a strong D and a motivated set of players on offense that will buy into his 100% attitude. He deserves a mythic run to a title as a tossed aside aging athlete with something to prove. In fact, if there was ever a notion of a MVP who didn't play a down, just look at what happened in Indy this year without Peyton.
Vols4life77 writes:
I think most obviously it wouldnt be the Jets. While playing in the same city as his brother would be the ONLY incentive here. A class act Peyton would never go play for an egomaniac coach like Rex Ryan as their personalities are completely opposite and Peyton unlike Ryan would not appreciate all the trash talking that comes along with the NEW new York jets. Furthermore playing new england twice is not the answer either. This is also why I don't see Miami as the landing destination either. Peyton is 35 and doesn't have that much time so playing for a contender would have to be on his agenda. San Fran would prob be the best place with Alex smith being a free agent and they have a stellar D.
mbible1utk#324980 writes:
I think the Jets will make a huge offer to him, and then they'll trade Mark Sanchez to Seattle (where Pete Carroll will be thrilled to have his old QB) for a second round pick in this draft. They may try to snag Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon off the free agent market too.
I'm not a Jets fan persay... just I could see that because they are itching for a better QB, and they'd be the one team who could deal the one they have for a high draft pick.

Peyton Manning's next team will be --- extremely lucky.
Everyone thinks he is done, but I would not bet on that. This is a guy who could have been another dumb jock with a strong arm who coasted his way through a decent career. Instead he reinvented the quarterback position, became a true offensive coordinator on the field, and pretty much single-handedly took the Colts to the playoffs every year (after his rookie season).
If you ask me, Irsay would be better off trading the top pick for some players to put around Manning. If he can come back and play like he did before, he has something around him to win with. If not, they get a top pick next year.
Luck is not Manning, and he will need some luck trying to fill those shoes in Indianapolis. Can you imagine the headlines when he struggles his first year or two? I would rather be a rookie head basketball coach with no Tennessee ties trying to replace Pat Summitt. No way to win with that hand, Mr. Luck.

No way.
IF he ever decides to coach, he would start as a QB coach. No reason I can see for him to coach college football. Maybe he will, but college coaches have to decide to invest nearly every waking hour for 10 months of the year, and if you had Peyton's money and his wife (unless he prefers not seeing her) why would you do that?
ProfessionalHandicapper writes:
I agree, the Dolphins need manning in that division to have a chance and the owner is very aggressive. Plus the owner is upset he lost the Jeff fisher bidding in the last hours after he thought he had a done deal. I say the Dolp[hins also.

It doesn't matter where he plays, he is a winner. The guy is nearly 70% in regular season wins for his career. He obviously knows how to win! He will go down as perhaps the greatest quarterback in history! Ofcourse we already know that don't we? GBO!

I know Jim Harbaugh is the latest coaching genius. Coach of the Year, master of the turnaround, but I believe he is doing something rather foolishly. He has attached himself to Alex Smith. Smith labored in obscurity for 5 years, then had one good year, in which he barely lost a playoff game to the eventual SB champs when he completed a total of ONE, that is ONE pass to his wide receivers.
San Fran has a very good defense, a capable runner in Gore and some good receivers and a good O line and are only lacking a very good QB to get to the championship.
Smith caddied for Harbaugh at a recent celebrity golf tourney. He collected a trophy for Harbaugh at postseason awards dinner. Harbaugh is not very smart in being a "buddy" to his QB who is out of his contract this year and it may be that Harbaugh is waiting in the weeds to get the full report on Mannings health. Manning, if healthy could lead them to a championship.

I want to believe that he'll somehow make his way back to UT (most likely as a QB coach, MAYBE working his way up to OC or even HC after Dooley-if he's still here then) but I think he'll be working in the booth then retiring

I think someone as driven to be the best as Peyton is would get frustrated trying to find a young player as dedicated as himself. As far as an analyst job goes, anywhere but ESPN. Whether their Charles Woodson promos cost Peyton the Heisman or not, the intent was there.

Don't discount the Redskins. Dan Snyder has more money than sense and may break the bank to sign PM if he's able to play.

Would love to see him go with San Francisco as that team truly is a QB short of a championship. Their defense is certainly championship level and, as one poster pointed out, is something that Indy has never had. I have always thought that if Indy had a defense, they would have won 3 or 4 titles in the last 12 years.
Colliervol writes:
Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see him back at UT in some capacity but I just don't see it. I cannot see anybody with that kind of money spending 80 hours a week trying to keep a bunch of 18 to 22 year olds in line and putting up with any college fan base. He also has two babies in the house now that he probably wants to spend time with as well.
Jim Harbaugh is a pretty good comparison from a competitive standpoint but Harbaugh didn't have a half a billion dollars in the bank. Why coach when you can be part of an NFL ownership team? If he wants to get placate his need to coach, he can get more involved with the training centers that he is already invested in. Open up a full time QB Academy maybe.
Whatever he does outside of playing, selfishly I hope it's not for 3 or 4 more years. Here's hoping he is healthy enough to continue playing.

Wonder if he would consider coaching? I think he loves the game too much to walk away from it and I dont se him as a anchor/host/guest on some television show.
FanNotSheep writes:
Peyton could do anything he wants to do. But first I think he probably plays QB in the NFL four or five more years.
After that, if he wants to coach, any team would give him the chance. If he wants to be an analyst for ESPN, no problem. If he wants to host a TV or radio sports show in Tennessee, Mississippi or Louisiana, think anyone would tune in? I'd say he would shut down everybody else in his time slot. If he wants to run for president, I'd vote for him. But he's not that stupid.
I know if I were advising him, I would say spend a couple of years traveling the world and just enjoying life, spend time with the wife and family. Mom and Dad aren't getting younger, so enjoy them while you can. Peyton has devoted most of his waking hours since he was a kid to playing football. Hell there's got to be more to life than that, even for a Manning.
