Former Vol Teddy Gaines hired at Maryville College

First-year Maryville College football coach Mike Rader announced several additions to his staff Wednesday, retaining offensive coordinator Shaun Hayes and hiring former Tennessee Vol Teddy Gaines.

Gaines was a member of UT’s 1998 national championship team. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL draft, playing with San Francisco and Chicago in the NFL and Rhein Fire in Germany and Montreal Allouettes in Canada.

After coaching and teaching stints in Knoxville, Cleveland and Kingsport, Gaines became was the strong side linebackers coach at Chattanooga in 2008. From there, he was defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator for Brevard College (2008-11). The Tornadoes secondary led the South Atlantic Conference in interceptions with 11 in 2011.

Rader also has hired Scott Brumett, who formerly coached at Chattanooga and Bravard, as defensive coordinator and Philip Bailey as offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator.

Congratulations T.Gaines I'm happy for you and your family.You are not far from home at all now,I remember seeing Teddy return a kick in high school at Dobyn-Bennett and I was like man this kid is fast.Once again Teddy Congratulations.

As a Kingsport native, I had hoped Gaines would have had a more productive career. He was an exceptional athlete. Congrats and best wishes T. Gaines!
