Martin after beating LSU: '... I think we're an NCAA tournament team'

Vols rally for 74-69 victory in overtime

Counzo Martin on Tennessee's win OT win over LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. — Tennessee staged a furious second-half rally Wednesday night, adding fuel to a regular season-ending flurry that's featured the Vols winning seven of their past eight games.

Tennessee (17-13, 9-6 SEC) came from 15 down to keep its hopes alive for a second-place finish in the SEC, scoring a 74-69 overtime men's basketball victory over LSU (17-12, 7-8) before a crowd of 10,476 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

"The key was heart," said Vols coach Cuonzo Martin, who's trying to extend UT's string of consecutive NCAA tournament appearances to seven. "We've been through these situations plenty of times before, and we had the heart and mental toughness to win it.

"We got to do our job and do our part, but I think we're an NCAA tournament team."

Freshman Jarnell Stokes scored a career-high 18 points, and Trae Golden and Jeronne Maymon each added 14.

The Vols close the regular season at 4 p.m. Saturday against Vanderbilt (21-9, 10-5) at Thompson-Boling Arena. If UT beats the Commodores and Kentucky wins at Florida at noon on Sunday, the Vols will finish second in the SEC.

The top four teams in the league receive a first-round bye in the SEC tournament, which runs March 8-11 in New Orleans.

"We had to win to keep our hopes alive," said Stokes, who was 9-of-10 shooting and had a team-high seven rebounds. "It's the SEC, on the road ... this team has a drive."

The Vols took their first lead in the game at 63-60 when Cameron Tatum drained a 3-pointer from the corner on the opening possession of overtime after the game ended 60-60 in regulation.

"We drew that big three up in the second half to run that for him, and he knocked it down," Martin said. "Cameron has put the work in, and he deserved it."

Golden gave UT a 66-63 advantage with a three-point play with 1:27 left, and after the Tigers answered with a field goal, Tatum hit a runner in the lane to make it 68-65 with 34 seconds remaining.

LSU's Justin Hamilton, who scored a team-high 17 points, missed a 3-pointer with 17.5 seconds left, and Golden came down with the rebound and was fouled with 16.8 seconds remaining.

Golden hit both free throws to make it 70-65, and then he proceeded to ice the game by hitting his next four in the final seconds, keeping the Tigers at arm's length.

"Obviously after this game our emotions are high," UT sophomore Jordan McRae said. "But we'll keep it one game at a time and come home and get ready for Vanderbilt."

The Vols used a 9-2 run to open the second half, cutting into a 35-24 half-time deficit; then trimming the lead to 37-35 with 16 minutes left when Stokes spun an altered hook shot off the glass and trigger an LSU timeout.

A Stokes jumper at the free-throw line tied the game at 57-57 with 3:52 left. It was the first time the game had been tied since it was 4-4 at the 17:08 mark of the first half.

LSU's Anthony Hickey (12 points) hit a 3-pointer with 3:34 left to make it 60-57, but Maymon answered with a scoop shot in traffic and followed on the next possession with a free throw that tied the game at 60-60 with 2:16 left.

Both teams failed to score on their final possession.

"LSU by 6 points"
Tonight the Vols see their season come to a halt as the next two games are bad matchups for the UT squad. Both sides making late runs at getting a postseason invitation somewhere. And UT's recent efforts suggest substantial progress for first-year HC Cuonzo Martin in Knoxville, with wins and covers for the Vols in 6 of their last 7 games. But the victory last Saturday at South Carolina was only UT's second of the season as a visitor, and the Vols will catch an angry LSU side that threw in an uncharacteristic clinker on Saturday at Ole Miss (when the Tigers shot a season-low 31% from the floor and missed 19 of 23 triples) after they won and covered their previous four outings. I believe LSU's collection of combo guards could present problems on the perimeter for UT. Must expect the Tiger backcourt weapons Ralston Turner, Anthony Hickey, and Andre Stringer to fare a lot better than the combined 6 for 26 FG shooting they produced last Saturday at Oxford. LSU (which has covered its last four at the Maravich Center) has lost SU only vs. top-ranked Kentucky at Baton Rouge in SEC play. UT could be looking at a must win 1st round game in the SEC Tourney to make the NIT. LSU should finish 2-0 and have a good shot at the NCAA. I give LSU a HUGE nod in this game. Stats show LSU 9-3 at homewith an average winning margin of 5ppg, while UT stands 3-8 away with a losing margin of 6ppg. LSU by 6 or more points looks about right.

UT is only 4-10 their last 14 road games vs a team with a winning home record." end of post

Gonna be fun on Saturday. Should be a great atmosphere. The possibility of finishing 2nd is amazing in itself. I do think vandy is a bad matchup for us but playing at home, who knows. Of course if Florida upsets ky on Sunday and bama wins I think a win against vandy only helps our win total and will mean the same thing as a loss....5th seed. Ironic we were in same position last year final game of year, win and finish 2nd in east, lose and finish 5th, which is what happened against ky last year.

Well, this is another step forward for CCM and the Vols. I don't recall them winning a game like this where they, on the road, withstand an emotional early effort from the home team, stay within striking distance, and win the game late after trailing the whole game. That only happens with poise and coaching.

I think all this NCAA talk is nothing but a distraction, but there is no doubt that the Vols are a top 30 or 40 team right now. I honestly don't care if they make the Big Dance. They are playing good basketball and took a big step forward tonight gutting out a game they would have quit in just a month ago.

Vols, if you do make the NIT, just win the dang thing. Don't worry about the NCAA's. Wear it on you sleeve. Go to Europe and come back as a very serious Top 20 team in 2013. Mike Hart, give Cuonzo a raise. He deserves it. Oh, and Vols, as long as I have been a Vol fan, I have never witnessed an SEC Tourney Championship. Now, would be a great time.

With all the four star kids Pearl had last year he still choked down the stretch and that's even giving him the NCAA game after Hamilton pulled the rug out from under him.

Martin has done a remarkable job with this team and the win tonight pretty much assures us of the postseason.

Pearl had 2 5 star McDonald's All American's and a roster full of 4 stars last season, went 8-8 in the SEC and got beat by 30 in the 1st round of the NCAA's. If he has this squad they maybe win 12 games. Loved Pearl's charisma and supported him while he was here but he never developed players. Last season our players wilted in clutch time, Pearl never made good adjustments in the 2nd half to come back and win a game last season. Tonight Trey and Cam cam up big when it counted, CCM adjusted and lit a fire under the players, something CBP hadn't done in 2-3 years.
