UT basketball sports information director Tom Satkowiak said the NCAA eligibility center (formerly known as the NCAA Clearinghouse) has approved Stokes' high school transcript, and he is enrolled at UT.
Stokes' final hurdle involves SEC administrative paperwork, a formality according to Satkowiak.
The 6-foot-8, 255-pound Stokes graduated from Memphis Southwind High School two weeks ago and will begin classes at UT on Jan. 11.
Stokes, ranked No. 11 in the nation by Rivals.com, isn't expected to practice with the team until Friday. The Vols play host to No. 10 Florida (12-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday, which also is Stokes' 18th birthday.
UT coach Cuonzo Martin said he won't allow Stokes to play in a game until he is properly conditioned.
"It's my job to put players in a position to succeed,'' Martin said on Wednesday. "We've got to see where he's at physically.''
