Jarnell Stokes cleared to practice by NCAA

Can practice while awaiting final OK

MEMPHIS —Tennessee men's basketball signee Jarnell Stokes joined his new teammates on the bench in FedExForum Wednesday night, and he also has been cleared to join them in practice.

UT basketball sports information director Tom Satkowiak said the NCAA eligibility center (formerly known as the NCAA Clearinghouse) has approved Stokes' high school transcript, and he is enrolled at UT.

Stokes' final hurdle involves SEC administrative paperwork, a formality according to Satkowiak.

The 6-foot-8, 255-pound Stokes graduated from Memphis Southwind High School two weeks ago and will begin classes at UT on Jan. 11.

Stokes, ranked No. 11 in the nation by Rivals.com, isn't expected to practice with the team until Friday. The Vols play host to No. 10 Florida (12-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday, which also is Stokes' 18th birthday.

UT coach Cuonzo Martin said he won't allow Stokes to play in a game until he is properly conditioned.

"It's my job to put players in a position to succeed,'' Martin said on Wednesday. "We've got to see where he's at physically.''

I know, right? I cringe every time I hear NCAA and clearinghouse. Glad it didn't take too long. Miss st and Kentucky will be his first two games, not an easy debut.

Can it really be good news about UT athletics?

Hope he makes it through his first practice without an injury or a grand jury investigation (oops, I meant NCAA crucifixion, sorry) into his recruitment. The way things have been going, I think I will not take anything for granted until Stokes plays in a real game.

There is always good news. But you seem to be always seeking the bad.

Happy bad year, Notfan.

the team played better in the rain then they do in the sunshine. Need another ball handler. I feel sorry for Golden he is only guy on the team that can dribble while being covered and he is only average at it.

If Memphis was any good, they would have beat us by 30 tonight. Any team that turns up the heat will drum us out of the building. Need to find someone that can help Golden out. Tatum is a walking turnover. He sets up more fast breaks for the other team then any UT player in a decade.

Hey, you want an ally-oop? Go ahead, we wont guard the man at the rim.

C Martin can not get his team to play.

In my opinion... The ONLY UT gets a better team in the next year or two is getting scorers.
They have to be able to create their own shot. UT has NO ONE capable of doing that.
McBee is our best shooter and he was what 0-5 tonight, with an air ball on a 3.

Maymon was a beast in one single game and now he looks like he has never scored in the paint.

McRae is nothing he was expected to be.

I just dont get it, the team seemed to have no desire to win this game and C Martin just has no reaction at all. I dont know how he sits back and lets his team be so flat in most games.

I understand it is not his style but when is enough, enough?

Stokes will help but (in my opinion( UT wins 3-4 SEC games this season, TOPS.

We have 5 L's coming up, most likely.

UF, UK, Miss St, Uconn and UGA.

C Martin is going have to be a heck of a coach to make UT a tournament team in the next 2 seasons.

I just dont see it, do UT fans realize that Bruce left FOUR 4 star recruits on the roster?

I do know that bringing in the 3 stars like Washpun and Richardson is only going to set UT back farther.

We need BIG TIME talent to win.

Once again, I hope I am wrong, I really do..

My wife bought me tickets to go see UT play at LSE on 2-29. I was so excited. Now, not so much. I live in Houston so cant go to games. I will be there in ALL Orange, I will be prepared to sit down and shut up, if down ike tonight.

I know, some on herer think to be a UT fan you can only speak the good.

I like to talk about the way I feel about the team good or bad. And the basketball is far from good.

I wont say recruiting top players will take UT to the top but the players Martin has brought in (other than J Stokes) are only going to set UT back farther.

Like I said, UT needs to recruit puer scorers

tovolny writes:

Well, one thing was obvious, the Vols appear to panic and lose the ball underneath...and they just seem out-manned and tentative.

I don't like the way our team shakes hands after the game. They never look the opponents in the eye. If they are going to participate in congratulating the other team, they could at least look at them, nod their heads, mumble 'good game' or something. Coach Martin and just one of the assistant coaches are the only people properly carrying out this ritual. Coach Martin appears to be pure class. Hopefully his example will be adopted by the rest of the staff and team. Of all the things to complain about, why did I pick the this? Has this been noticed by anyone else out there?

Well, you're judged by the company you keep and given the teams we beat out his other recruits for, it's going to be a long couple of years. Honestly had Stokes not had his senoir season cancelled by the TSSAA overlords he'd either be at Kentucky or Memphis next year.

Pearl beat Memphis by 20 last year. Martin loses by 18 to them and gets beat twice in the same year by Memphis. The guy can't coach but I suppose people will make excuses for Martin like they do with Dooley.

Couple questions...1 did u watch the michigan game last year? 2 if you are saying it is the term in my opinion necessary? 3 can i call you capt obvious? 4 do you know that UT lost 7 players, 5 of the their top 6 scorers, 69% of the mins, and 77% of their scoring? Last question: who is lse?

Okay first off..im sure he will help but i dont think the whole team is relying on him..research before posting..he was ruled ineligible to play by a tssaa transfer rule when he transferred his senior year from memphis central to southwind high. Some people call facts excuses..especially if they arent fans of the team and troll on the site

Okay your post made no sense...when you're kentucky 14-1 ranked 2nd in the nation and look like the Tennessee team tonight i'll have my answer??? So if UK had facial hair they would be struggling or if UT players shaved they would be in the top 10 and winning most of their games?

i will try to explain: maybe . When you look like abe lincoln(golden, tatum) and john holmes(McBrick). and you lose .. . Then you look like up and coming young successful men..ie kentucky's basketball team..and you win...

Interesting take on the success of basketball..couldnt possibly have anything to do with the fact that UK has extremely talented players..its all about to shave or not to shave. So lets go out and recruit some smooth faced kids! It doesnt matter if they can play basketball or not as long as they shave we will be successful! That makes the evaluation process so much easier! Thanks for explaining..

lol. wastin' your time. I think he may be drunk or high or somthing like that.

IF he meant we're recruiting the wrong players he has a decent argument...well minus the facial hair perspective.
I like some of Martin's recruits like Washpun because they like playing defense.
They seem to like hard work. I like Maymon because of that. Our vaunted 4star atheletes don't have any more talent so far than our lowly 3 stars and I think some of them will see a starting roll if they don't start showing a little strength. PERSEVERANCE!

It has nothing to do with facial hair. It has to do with attitude, fortitude, and lassitude!!
Golly I think I just became a coach!? Is athletitude a word? Probably not because the spellchecker doesn't like it.

It will be a miracle when we beat Florida. I will go to the nearest sea and "walk on water"! They probably are better than Memphis. They MAY be better than Kentucky? I don't expect at all to come close in this one. Maybe for 20 minutes somewhere in the game. IF we decide to play as a team and share the ball and the defense too? Who knows?

We have some really talented individuals that just at this point don't know how to play as a team. No leaders really. No followers either, lol When we break down in the games it seems we've just gone back to street-ball to me.
Maymon is not our best player to me. Might as well say Makanjuola is or anyone who has had a "breakout game". Golden could be our best 2 guard in the league if he could get to play that position. Up to Washpun's progress right now.
golden needs others to step it up. Last night he forced some things because from what I saw at least he didn't have much movement from most of the other players. Bad screens. Bad spacing(partly due to Memphis). Bad shooting and choice of shots. McBee shot whether he was open or not. He should have passed some of those misses off.
Golly I've got to get off here!

IMO we need to really tone down our expectations for Jarnell. I live near Memphis and have seen Jarnell play 3 times. He dominates smaller foes, but tends to disappear against taller competition. He's had an NBA body since 9th grade, so has been at the top of a lot of recruiting lists since then. But he has never really taken the next step.

Good kid, polite. But he does have an entourage, and a lot of people chirping in his ear. He left Central HS without a logical plan (was best friends there with Cameron Clear) and then the circus was in town. Got terrible advice, and was never cleared to play this year.

Don't get me wrong, he's a good player, maybe a slighly over-rated 5-star, but a great get for Cuonzo. But he's not a program changer, not a shot creator. More like a solid 3rd player on a good college team.

Golly you may be right? I guess all those coaches at the other schools wanting him were overrating him too.
Seriously that could be. It wouldn't be the first time a 5star was overrated. But if nothing else he'll be good for future recruiting. We don't have to play him I suppose as bad as he is and all.lol
Seriously I'm thinking good advice is hard to come by and good advice is more often not accepted. I'm glad he's here regardless and I for one think he made the perfect choice. "Course I'm a little biased in the matter.
