Number of Vols not back with team

Derek Dooley on mid-year attrition for the Vols

Coach Dooley goes over the injured players list for the Vols

For various reasons that Tennessee coach Derek Dooley declined to discuss, a number of Vols are no longer with the program heading into the 2012 season.

Along with wide receivers DeAnthony Arnett and Matt Milton, whose respective transfers were already reported, linebacker Robert Nelson, defensive tackle Arthur Jeffery, quarterback Nash Nance and linebacker Martaze Jackson are no longer with the team, Dooley said.

Offensive lineman JerQuari Schofield is still in school, but not currently part of the team because of academic issues.

Dooley spoke to reporters this afternoon, hours after he hired former Alabama assistant Sal Sunseri as UT's new defensive coordinator. The announcement came less than 24 hours after Sam Pittman was named the team's new offensive line coach, replacing Harry Hiestand.

Dooley still has two openings to fill. He declined to get into specifics about those positions.

"You catch a break for about 30 seconds and that's about how long you've got at Tennessee before something else is on the way," Dooley said.

With few exceptions, Arnett being the most notable, we won't miss any one of these kids going forward. Now I'm not saying Dooley necessarily wanted them to go but more often than not, just as in the cases of Nu'Keese Richardson and Bryce Brown (neither of whom even plays anymore), so many of these kids just can't handle it when they are no longer the superstar they were in HS and have to actually compete for playing time. My son plays football in NAIA and I told him that as soon as they signed him they were looking to sign someone better than him. It's a business and these kids just aren't the level of player we need to compete in our conference. Go Vols!!!

It was my understanding that Dooley recruited (or actually got them) to UT. They are Sophomores, Dooley been here two years so on signing day it was Dooley.

Some kids get a free ride in HS and when they get to college it is a culture shock and when things dont go there way they dont know how to handle it.

Good Hire on the DC job. Should be able to grab a few extra defensive players this year with that hire. I am sure he was recruiting players for Bama that he will now contact for UT.

excellent post.

it's hard for me to keep count and it's rarely reported, but i've heard that they'll have to get rid of around 8-10 players.

His system may be better this year with 3 good QB's ready to go. I've wanted him gone but hoping with the depth it will be real good. I really dont miss the run when the pass is going. Great entertainment.

Dooley recruited/landed the pkg deal from Calhoun, GA, not Kiffin. This was most likely what CDD envisioned from the beginning. Nobody expected NN to play and that was correct.

Reminds me of the package deal with Bo Hardagree and 5* Daniel Brooks. Don't think Bo ever played a down, but he stayed 5 years and got an education. NN may want to play in a game at a smaller uni?

Yea! The NCAA/University Presidents who set the rules say they are interested in Student/Athletes but then the Hypocrites pass something like the 25/85 scholarship rule. What choice does a coach have. He has to run 15 players off to meet the limits. If the University Presidents, who pass these rules, want to be serious about education they need to change the rule to 25/100 or really they need to change it back to 30/120. This is what happens when you get people who are trained to teach class running Football Programs. I don't need to get started on the NCAA or I would be typing all weekend!

Bringin' in people with SEC experience is a good deal and I think he's bringin' in the kids that are gonna help them compete for those said championships. Naturally, it will take a bit but we need the people that have proven recruiting track records and can get the "big boys" on campus. We will find out soon enough however...I think the 6-6/380 beast DT is a good start...here's to hoping he actually contributes from day 1 and does for us what Cody did for AU!!! GBO!!

I wish them all the very best of luck.

OL coach hire is a good hire and we get a very good recruiter that's PROVEN he can coach kids up and help them make it to the NFL and the big kids will love that so I expect our recruiting and O line to get better in the next couple of years.

DC hire is a HUGE WIN and the PR win with recruits to get another Nick saTan guy fresh off a National Championship win along with CDD who spent 7 years with Nick saTan should help our recruiting a great deal.

Nick saTan simply does NOT keep bad coaches around him at all so this could turn out to be a really GREAT hire that both CDD and AD Hart have been working on.

Well done CDD and keep up the good work!!!

Actually, I think you may be right. Didn't Kitten bolt in January, right before signing day? And Dooley did a very good job of keeping most of that class together (e.g. keeping commitments Kitten made)? Just read in Chatt. TFP that Nance is looking to transfer to an Ivy League school. Good for him.

Why is it that some think reporting news is negative? I think this is great news. All of the guys mentioned were never going to see the playing field and wanted to transfer. Which will increase our scholarship number.

Maybe Dooley hasn't released those names yet until this presser. After all the reason for these presser's is so the coach can give all of us (includes the media) news.

I personally think Gribble does a good job of unbiased UT reporting. GBO!!!

Nash was going to sign with Vandy but Dooley or someone on his staff convinced him to come to UT, which opened up the door to get D. Rogers to back out on the Dawgs for the Vols. I always liked Nash but figured he would not get any playing time. Hope he does well at the Ivy League School he chooses. Must be a pretty smart kid. And about the new DC, we can't talk smack anymore about getting the new a coach from 2nd tier school. Grabbing a coach from the NC team is a sign for better things to come (I hope).

Don't know about the reasons but an aunt to Nash Nance told my wife last week that he was leaving and so were some others whom she didn't identify. I doubt drugs played any part, just that they couldn't crack the 2-deep roster and with the new guys coming in they saw very little chance of ever playing. I think Nance saw the writting on the wall, Peterman is in school and more than likely will be 3rd in line pushing Nash to 4th string. With the 25/85 you just can't waste a scholarship on a project the way you could in the past. It's been reported the safety from the D.C. area decommitted because of grades, he would not be admitted so a scholarship would not have been offered. You can be a good athlete but you have to take care of the grades first.
