Tennessee's top target for its special teams coach vacancy won't be joining the Vols.
San Diego Chargers special teams coach Rich Bisaccia could not get out of his contract and was unable to say yes to the Vols for a second time in the last three years, a source told the News Sentinel on Friday. The source requested anonymity because it is not authorized to speak publicly about personnel matters.
With the naming of John Palermo as the new defensive line coach, the Vols are still in the market for two assistants. A special teams coach will certainly be one of them, as the Vols are looking to replace Eric Russell, who left last month to become coach Mike Leach's assistant head coach/special teams coordinator at Washington State.
Bisaccia was considered the top candidate the last time the job was open. ESPN.com reported in 2009 that he had agreed to a deal with then-coach Lane Kiffin before Kiffin left to take a job at Southern California.
